    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) İnceköse, Ülkü; İnceköse, Ülkü; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Rereading the Concept of Heterotopia: Buca Prison and Its Neighborhood
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Yılmaz, Ebru; Yılmaz, Ebru; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Since their conceptual existence, prisons have been spaces used by the power to separate individuals who are considered to be disrupting the structure of society from the society. Concepts that have differentiated with the sociological and cultural structures of societies that have changed over time have also evolved their own spatial systems in accordance with their own changes. French researcher Michel Foucault's researches and theories on prisons have contributed to making them not just physical spaces, making their interactions with their environments visible, and making them a tool that provides a clearer understanding of their role in the transformation of cities and societies inherent in power. The concept of Heteratopia, which Foucault mentions in his work on the Other Space, is a concept that should be evaluated together with the imposition form based on principles developed with physical rules and the tools used by the power to produce itself, emerging in the network of relations, regarding understanding how spaces produce information after the 20th century. Intersections that meet this concept in cities also benefit an active role with some physical boundaries or administrative forms operated by the power. Buca Prison, which has been visible for years on the busiest street of the city with its sharp borders, has become a structure where such spatial relations diversify, dominate and become visible. Buca prison, which has seriously affected the built environment in which it is located, has defined new spatial boundaries arising from social relations for years. When these spatial boundaries are evaluated within the scope of Foucault's studies, new responses and information are produced. For all these reasons, this study analyzes how Buca was affected by Buca Prison, using archive scans and qualitative research method ve evaluated the spatial sections associated with the city with theoretical approaches from the perspective of Foucault.

A Study on Social Sustainability in Urban Green Spaces: the Case of İnciraltı City Forest
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Yılmaz, Ebru; Yılmaz, Ebru; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The future is one of the fundamental concerns of humanity. In these days, where the main purpose is to ensure the continuity of life, the concept of sustainability comes to the fore in order to ensure this continuity. Although the concept of sustainability has equal dimensions as "economic, environmental and social", sustainability in society is generally highlighted with its environmental and economic dimensions. The social dimension of sustainability has attracted attention due to the increasing social problems in society. This thesis aims to determine the role of urban green spaces in achieving social sustainability. Urban green spaces, which are the most easily accessible public spaces, have been selected to research social sustainability because the reflections of social problems in society can easily be seen in these spaces. Within the scope of this thesis, firstly, a literature review was made to understand the position of social sustainability in the concept of sustainability. After exploring different social sustainability approaches, a framework consisting of social sustainability dimensions was determined to ensure the assessment of social sustainability. Then, the development process of urban green spaces as public spaces was investigated, and the relationship between urban green spaces and key social sustainability dimensions were examined. After the theoretical framework, İnciraltı City Forest was studied as a case study. In the case study, the social sustainability dimensions in the area were evaluated with a questionnaire study. This thesis shows that urban green spaces support key dimensions such as sense of belonging, equality and human rights which are necessary for achieving social sustainability.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Canaran, Deniz; Çil, Ela; Çil, Ela; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This thesis, with its general scope, aims to investigate the position of the public space, in the socio-cultural context. For this research, coffee houses are examined as micro public spaces. In doing so, this study reveals two different literature review. The first literature is an examination of the emergence of coffeehouses in history. Since its discovery, coffee has become a popular consumer good that has had a global value, and coffee consumption has become one of our everyday practices with its tagged along routines. This daily practice has created its spatial types of space and has led coffeehouses and cafes to emerge in different forms in many geographies. The second literature survey includes different descriptions and classifications of public space. Since public space research is the product of an interdisciplinary field, there are different definitions and various theoretical approaches to the public space. While correlating the two literature review, this thesis investigates the relationship between public space and coffeehouses also in two main contexts which are the political and social examination of the public space. Collaterally, coffeehouses were also studied through these two contexts. In other words, this study aims deal coffeehouses as micro-public spaces with these two different contexts to reveal their various forms in different histories and geographies. In the last chapter, this thesis concluded that coffeehouses were transformed in parallel with the changes in public space and social structure and since the day they opened they received many different public practices due to their pluralistic pattern.
