Master Thesis A Study on Place Identity and Placelessness on the Backside of the İzmir-Alsancak Port Using Environmental Perception Approach(01. Master Thesis Alternative Approaches in Urban Design in Declining Historic Areas: Case of Historic City of İzmir(2023) Saygın, Nicel; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyWhile the changing dynamics of the space drive the spatial practices to change for keeping up with recent conditions, alternative approaches as an updated version of placemaking concept have emerged for exceeding limitations that are generated by privatisation, gentrification and conflicts of interests that harm the relationship between place and community. The idea suggests the required amount of intervention to prevent over or under design with the consideration of both social and physical issues and promotes user-oriented design while targeting to create a permenant change in attitudes. In this context, the study aims to explore, document, and understand the practices of alternative approaches that are practised with event design, game design, civic initiatives, participatory design, temporary- tactical design and adaptive reuse in the declining historic area, case of Historic City of İzmir which is sensitive due to tangible and intangible elements of the space. This study follows a descriptive approach and the process in Historic City of İzmir is investigated through case study methodology, and then actions that were conducted by different actors were evaluated through insight of the literature. As a result, the study emphasises alternative practices as supportive tools to go beyond the physical aspect of the space considering the different dimensions of urban design. Also, the study presents the application of alternative urban design approaches while explaining the new perspective of local governance defined as the İzmir Model and suggests the consideration of placemaking process for policy making in urban design context.Master Thesis Integration of Archaeological Sites Into Planning Process: the Case of Iskele (urla)(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2021) Saygın, Nicel; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe archaeological sites in the cities have been undergoing reconstruction activities after the Second World War. It has been emphasized that the archaeological sites that have emerged in many cities are important cultural heritage. Various studies have been carried out to integrate these areas into planning processes. Cities in Turkey, it has seen continuously inhabited since the early stages. Although the integration of archaeological sites in cities into the planning processes has been on the agenda since the 1990's in our country, current policies and strategies do not allow these areas to be integrated into the planning processes. Integrating the archaeological sites in the cities into the planning process will preserve the multi-layered structure of historical cities and prevent the destruction of archaeological remains during investments in these areas. In the study, it is discussed how to integrate archaeological sites in cities into the planning process, and in order to do that, firstly, the international and national legal frameworks which include the archaeological sites in the cities are evaluated. Afterwards, the successful examples in Europe are examined and what these examples can add to archaeological sites in historical cities in Turkey and Iskele (Urla) have been discussed. As a case study, the significance and the planning process of the archaeological sites in Iskele (Urla) have been examined. A survey was conducted with the people living around the archaeological sites and in-depth interviews with the excavation directors who carried out excavation work in the archaeological sites. According to the results of the survey, it was concluded that the inhabitants of the archaeological sites were also affected by the inability to integrate these areas into planning processes. As a result of all this, recommendations have been developed to ensure that the archaeological sites in historical cities in Turkey and particularly in Iskele (Urla) are integrated into planning processes.Master Thesis Location Choice of Food Industry in İzmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Akbaşoğulları, Nilnaz; Duran, Hüseyin Engin; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn this study, the spatial distribution of the food companies registered in the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry in İzmir has been investigated and the causality of the site selection has been reviewed. The empirical studies conducted in the literature so far does not include a detailed study on the choice of location of the food industry, a factor that adds strength to this study. The purpose of the current study is to analyse the determinants of firm location in Izmir’s food industry. It particularly focuses on the impact of experience and size of the firms. In this study, we examined, through statistical methods (such as descriptive statistics, maps, cross sectional linear regressions, spatial autocorrelation analyses), 734 companies. The following variables were empirically analysed, firms’ establishment dates, sub-sectors, number of employees, capital assets, locations, distances from the centre of Izmir, distances from the centre of the sub-province that the establishment belongs to and the distance from each other. As a result of the empirical analyses and spatial data evaluation, companies’ choice of location in the food industry can be summarized as follows; Experience plays a very significant role, which means that experienced companies are located in the centre or close to the centre because they have already been well-established in that place. The choice of location does not have any bearing upon the size of the firm.Master Thesis Place-Making: Examination of Practices in Turkey(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Kuru, Ömür Damla; Saygın, Nicel; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyPlace-making is an approach which represents a comprehensive framework in building public places with a major concern of assigning functions in an ongoing process. The major point that place-making distinguishes from the former approaches is underlining the process of making instead of the certain product of design. This thesis is a descriptive study which aims to explain the making process of contemporary practice in Turkey. The perceptions of privacy and publicness concepts in Turkish Culture are different than they are in Western Culture. These two cultures are similarly affected by recent movements against top-down policies which lead commodification of commons. Pressures cause reactions such as Wall Street Occupation and Occupation of Tahrir Square. When we consider Turkey, we see that the place-making process is driven by NGOs and platforms that advocate right to the city similar to worldwide movements. In this thesis place-making process in Turkey is introduced with its traditional background and its contemporary break through. Three types of bottom-up movements are taken as cases that are selected from Istanbul, the primary city of Turkey and under a great pressure of construction. Gezi Park Occupation, Kuzguncuk Farm Reaction and Don Quixote House Occupation and Yeldeğirmeni Neighborhood Revitalization are analyzed through main components of making process; actors, processes and outcomes. It is remarked that place-making process draws a distinct identity rather than the traditional approach to public places and aims to protect commons by advocating right to the city in different social contexts that reflect the complexity of place-making process.Master Thesis Stairways as Spatial Elements in an Urban Environment(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Taşke, Neşe; Gençel, Ziya; Gencel, Ziya; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study is focused on determining the design criteria for creating livable and democratic stairways, which are a part of the public space, that would enhance social interactions by providing all day long safe and comfortable use by residents as well as passers-by through analysing the physical aspects in order to lay out the functional problems. Stairways, which at first were a symbol of power or were a path to gods, after the beginning of public life, sharing urban space, circulation, pedestrian movement, created paths that evolved through topographic obstacles to become connections between different levels that required new designs and arrangements. The intricate relation between stairways, street-life and urban social life leave the stairways neglected through the changes in public life where the streets filled with obstacles are becoming gateways to residences. On the other hand stairways in the past have always been urban spaces which housed social life with all its features by looking at evidence of works in literature, music and cinema through time. Street characteristics have an important role in the urban setting as they evolve with public life reflecting its social, cultural and economic status. Because of the above reasons outdoor spaces are to be designed considering the social, cultural properties, needs and requests of the residents. and passers-by.s keeping track of the harmony with the environment. The study, at this point, stresses that stairways, although cannot house all outdoor activities, are more than mere elements of between levels circulation elements due to their capacity of a bearing many functions. The necessity of considering the variety of behaviours, needs and requests of differing age and user groups when designing is another issue pointed out in this study. Although stairways have the advantage of being isolated from vehicle traffic they still pose problems to the handicapped and elderly. Inspite the unavailability of ramp implementation in some cases stairways are still the playground for kids. The case study area is Güzelyalı district in İzmir, which has a variety of stairways with different characteristics. The stairways in the area have been classified with reference to their functions in the past, and their evolved functions due to increase in population and wear in time. The current physical and social situation of these stairways have been analysed with observation, photographing, inquiries etc. These methods provided a stronger foundation for discriminating the needs and requirements of the users, by a participative approach, in order to put forward design methods that would create an environmental quality to reach these goals. The study states that stairways, in addition to being safe paths for necessary activities, should promote optional and social activities to take place on them. This can be obtained by designs that are motivating, exiting, implemented such that they are connected to other public spaces, enhance environmental quality with sensible use of design elements a outdoor furniture.Key words: urban space, public space, stairway, steps, pedestrian, stairway activities, access, social interaction, environment quality.Master Thesis The Morphological Characteristics of the Block Structure in Central Areas(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Bozkurt, Uğur; Süel, Akın; Süel, Akın; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis thesis aims to introduce the fundamental role of the block structure in formation of the urban fabric, and with the aim to develop an alternative method for optimum conditions of the block structure, unlike the formation methods of the 'Development Regulation'. Block structure refers to arrangement of the plots, buildings and spaces within the building blocks. So, this thesis revealed the importance of the appropriate formation of the block structure to form the urban space creating the urban vitality in central part of the city. In order to achieve these aims, urban fabric, urban space, block structure, and streets are defined with their components to understand the scope of the study. After that, the existing conditions of the urban planning techniques are mentioned to expose the formation methods of the current applications. Then, the design criteria, which are selected in the literature survey, are introduced to welladjusted design conditions of the block structure arrangement. Within this framework, the design methods are designated to analyze and design the optimum formation conditions of the block structure. Finally, these design methods, which are defined as 'Comparative Study', 'Typo-Morphological Approach', 'Figure-Ground Theory', 'Density Distribution Model', 'Natural Lighting Assessment Method', 'Urban Design Guidelines' and 'Urban Coding', are used to suggest a conceptual model for an alternative size and form of the block structure, in contrast the existing conditions of the case study area with the aim to evaluate the determination process of the optimum conditions. Key Words: Urban Fabric, Urban Form, Block Structure, Plot Pattern, Building Structure, Network, Building Density, Design Criteria, Urban Morphology, Urban Design Guidelines, Comparative Study.Master Thesis Utilization of Urban Design Principles in Designing the Urban Space Case Studies on the Netherlands and Turkey(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2007) Bal, Ufuk; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis thesis aims to develop a concept model as a tool for successful urban space design by defining general principles and therefore to stress the importance of defining and using these criteria when realizing projects. Moreover, the thesis research aims to provide concrete examples for designers to get to know how to integrate these principles practically into design and implementation process. In this framework, first the debate on the definition of urban design has been put forward. Then, the historical development of urban design has been presented in order to understand the past experiences and attempts in creating .successful. urban space. The principles of urban design, which are crucial to develop a key model for designing the urban space, have been defined. Furthermore, current policies and design control systems in different European countries have been examined. The historical development of urban design practice with contemporary examples from the Netherlands and Turkey have been examined. The thesis provides brief analysis on urban design projects with respect to urban design principles in seven headings, which constitutes the components of successful urban space: character, continuity and enclosure, quality of public realm, ease of movement, legibility, adaptability and diversity. In this context, urban design principles have been used to monitor the urban design projects from the Netherlands and Turkey with making comparative study between them. In this sense, selected projects have been evaluated and compared basing on how they fulfill the requirements that have been described with the above mentioned urban design principles, and more importantly, how they satisfy these principles in the process of designing the urban space. As a consequence, importance and necessity of urban design principles in order to create successful urban space and the importance of urban design for the future of the cities has been presented.Master Thesis The Development of Shopping Centers in Turkey: The Case of Denizli(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2010) Kuyumcu, Aysun; Saygın, Nicel; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn the last decade, even though the importance of shopping centers appear to decrease day by day, their place within the Turkish real estate market displays a considerable rise. Among those reasons underlying the increase of investments on shopping malls take place the stability of the economic environment, the insufficiency of supply within the market of shopping centers, the young and dynamic population, the increase on gross domestic product, and the high profit ratio compared to other countries. As an explanatory research, this study targets at evaluating the changes and development of shopping centers in history, identifying the characteristics of today's shopping centers, examining the location criteria of shopping centers, and focusing on the development of shopping centers from the world-wide scale to Turkey and Denizli. This study has dwelled upon the characteristics and classification of shopping centers in the world by ICSC and DeLisle and of those in Turkey by AMPD. Among the examined issues take place the adopted criteria in selection of location for shopping centers and the development process of Turkish shopping centers as based on quantitative information obtained. The development process of shopping centers in Turkey have been analyzed for the period between 1988-2009 and in addition to existing circumstances, future considerations have also been made. Examination of the development process of shopping centers in Denizli, on the other hand, has involved consideration of firstly the geographical and socio-economic status of the city, and then of the urban development profile as well as the traditional trade district. In the final stage of the examination, all shopping centers in Denizli have been chronologically analyzed in terms of their development processes, investors, relations with the urban pattern, physical characteristics, transportation facilities and accessibility. In result of the comparative evaluation, discussions focus mainly on the location of shopping centers and their harmony with the urban pattern as well as their future strategies against the threat of becoming identical with one another.
