    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Özden, Pelin; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This thesis aims to analyze how participatory processes increase community engagement and enhance the role of the user in urban design processes. In this context, a mixed approach is used, blending qualitative and quantitative methods including spatial analysis, surveys, interviews and participatory design workshops. The research explores the effectiveness of participatory approaches and co-design tools in urban design, focusing on two case studies from İzmir, Turkey. The research is organized around three main questions: Which participatory design approaches effectively involve community members in urban planning? How do different co-design tools affect the effectiveness of participatory design processes? How do toolkit techniques shape user experiences in urban design? Key findings show that participatory design enables the creation of more inclusive, innovative and sustainable urban spaces by incorporating the knowledge and experience of community members. The study highlights the importance of user experience in co-design processes and reveals that well-designed interfaces and tools can increase the overall effectiveness of urban design projects by facilitating the active participation of citizens. The findings highlight the potential of participatory design to strengthen the social fabric of communities and increase individuals' sense of belonging to urban life. Through extensive analysis, this study provides valuable insights into the role of community engagement in creating livable and resilient urban environments. By examining the effects of different toolkit techniques on user experiences, the thesis aims to contribute to the development of more effective and user-friendly design processes. This research provides recommendations for developing more inclusive and innovative urban design practices and advocates for the wider application of participatory approaches in urban planning.

Location Choice of Food Industry in İzmir
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Akbaşoğulları, Nilnaz; Duran, Hüseyin Engin; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
In this study, the spatial distribution of the food companies registered in the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry in İzmir has been investigated and the causality of the site selection has been reviewed. The empirical studies conducted in the literature so far does not include a detailed study on the choice of location of the food industry, a factor that adds strength to this study. The purpose of the current study is to analyse the determinants of firm location in Izmir’s food industry. It particularly focuses on the impact of experience and size of the firms. In this study, we examined, through statistical methods (such as descriptive statistics, maps, cross sectional linear regressions, spatial autocorrelation analyses), 734 companies. The following variables were empirically analysed, firms’ establishment dates, sub-sectors, number of employees, capital assets, locations, distances from the centre of Izmir, distances from the centre of the sub-province that the establishment belongs to and the distance from each other. As a result of the empirical analyses and spatial data evaluation, companies’ choice of location in the food industry can be summarized as follows; Experience plays a very significant role, which means that experienced companies are located in the centre or close to the centre because they have already been well-established in that place. The choice of location does not have any bearing upon the size of the firm.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Erdem, Ezgi Gül; Akpınar, Figen; Akpınar, Figen; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Cities are complicated and dynamic structures. Urban agenda has changed constantly. Urban planning has to follow and reshape this dynamism as a return. Cities are under constant restructuring with parallel to spatial, economic, social and political conditions. In recent years, urban transformation has become turning point in planning system and occupied dominant role as a policy tool in Turkish context. Urban transformation has come to the planning agenda as an indispensable policy tool. Especially in the last two decades, urban transformation projects became a tool of spatial restructuring processes and solving major problems such as illegal housing, disaster risk, and uncontrolled urban sprawl. Moreover, with the generalization and reinterpretation of the context of transformation caused conceptual and practical confusion. The implementation of the urban transformation projects is taken place almost in all Turkish cities; however, it has felt more in big metropolitan cities as in the case of first Istanbul and then Ankara. The city of İzmir, seems to be subjected to all these discussions. This study first discusses the urban transformation concept as a tool of planning, by clarifying its principles on a global scale. After, it evaluates Turkey’s performance on a holistic approach, which means all interventions that caused transformation at the citywide level in the case of İzmir central areas. The analysis has conducted using multidimensional spatial data in GIS database in relation to general policies and legislation. All urban transformations projects in İzmir have digitalized geographically on a map to evaluate their location and attributes in relation to urban plans. As a result of these analyses, it has been concluded that despite the urban transformation concept was proposed as a solution to problems of the cities, it has evolved into a new problematic because of fragmented and speculative rent seeking activities or ineffective applications. The study aims to highlight these deficiencies and offer solutions.
