Conflictual Interplay Between Rural and Urban Areas: Demarcation of Peri-Urban Areas and Challenges in Planning, the Case of Izmir
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Aydemir, Sena; Akpınar, Figen; Akpınar, Figen; Çelik, Mehmet Ali; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology

The Patterns and Motivations of Counterurbanization in Urmia During Covi̇d-19
    (01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) Khajepasha, Alıreza Nıknam; Gkartzıos, Menelaos; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of counterurbanisation in Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic. Existing research in English tends to focus on counterurbanisation as driven by a combination of factors like a preference for rural life, class aspirations, and demographics. However, the global economic downturn caused by the pandemic offers a new lens through which to understand counterurbanisation, particularly in developing countries. This study utilizes both secondary data analysis and in-depth interviews with counter-urban migrants in Urmia County, Iran. The interviews reveal a shift in the primary driver of migration. Unlike existing literature that emphasizes pro-rural motivations, the findings suggest that the pandemic triggered the initial move for many migrants. However, the experience of a better lifestyle in rural areas during the pandemic ultimately influenced them to stay.

Gis-Based Mapping of Spatial Experiences: Case of University Students in İzmir
(2023) Şenol, Fatma; Şenol, Fatma; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This research investigates which factors affect the urban experiences of 18 to 25-year-old university students in Izmir. It focuses on factors such as gender, income, living with or without family, and lifetime in İzmir above or below three years. It investigates how these factors affect students' use of the city's socio-cultural areas, daily and general shopping areas, sports and outdoor activity areas, and outdoor eating and drinking areas. It also investigates the places in the city that students enjoy and are unenjoyable and why they enjoy or are unenjoyable. Aiming to go one step beyond the survey and trying to use the Qualitative GIS method, it tries to capture sketch maps and narratives in a single study by using spatial markings and open-ended questions in the survey, and while doing this, it uses Survey123, with an ArcGIS application. Research data were collected from 32 men and 58 women who were Izmir Institute of Technology students. The result of this study explains the urban experiences and city perceptions of university students in line with survey results and spatial markings. As a result, it develops suggestions and strategies for the design of activity areas by looking at the urban usage areas of the students.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Goncagül, Ertunç; Özdemir, Semahat; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This study aims: to introduce the theoretical and pragmatic features of the New Urbanism. and the .Urban Coding Method.. vhich is known as the last pL1Ilning approach in an historical framework: to show that most of this approach' s design approach in an historical framework: to show that most of this approach design principles and the life style that it determines have something in common and convenient with the traditional Turkish values that we are about to lost: to prove that concerning local features, it would be adapted and take the place of conventional planning approach. In order to demonstrate it a physical comparative design sutdy was accomplished in a case study area, Karşıyaka Şemikler District. which is one of the most important and also problematic site within the Izmir Metropolitan Area. This study indicated that, New Urbanist principles can generate more desirable consequences as compared to conventional principles in the process of creating urban form provided that people approve to change their short sight and approve to be recepti ve.
