Department of Industrial Design; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology; 02. Faculty of ArchitectureThe objective of this master's dissertation is to evaluate adoption factors for robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as its evaluation methodology. Robotic-assisted surgery is used in various surgical fields. It is mainly used as a tool in numerous disciplines' minimally invasive surgery procedures (MIS). Since it has so many different application areas and actors, the determination of its adoption factors and evaluation process of these factors' priorities for surgeons is a highly complex issue that includes multicriteria of decision-making and numerous surgeons. A comprehensive list of these possible adoption factors recognized by conducting an extensive literature review, was picked and chosen. First, we had 310 factors mentioned in the literature that have a potential impact on the adoption process of the RAS. We have reduced these to 20 factors that are categorized under five different main criteria. By this, a unique AHP tree that is this thesis' contribution to the literature was developed. The research data was collected by an online survey from the surgeons of various disciplines working in Türkiye. Our final sample to evaluate priorities consisted of forty-one surgeon responses in total. The evaluation process consists of three steps: analyzing individual-based pairwise comparison matrices, their consistency rations, and their priority vectors. We executed the same workflow for the aggregated analysis for disciplined-based and all aggregation. Results are examined in detail and concluded with insightful interpretations.Master Thesis Strategy-Based Competency Management in Innovation Management(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2023) Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri; Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri; Pasin, Merih; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis study involves creating a comprehensive list of competencies derived from both literature and industry sources, as well as analyzing the correlation between the competencies in the list and companies' innovation strategies. It has been identified that competency management should be included in the innovation management chain system (mission-vision-strategy-innovation strategies), which is culturally ingrained in innovative companies. Competency management is crucial in organizations, particularly in areas such as recruitment processes, talent retention, rotation, performance, and project management. Although competency management is often associated with human resources departments or innovation/R&D departments within companies, it should actually be a topic that concerns all departments of the company within the scope of the definition of innovation. Therefore, this thesis aims to identify the critical competencies for strategic decisions made by top management for the entire company, which will lead to more efficient utilization of human resources, increased employee motivation, and more effective planning in terms of training and competency development. This approach integrates competency management into the innovation management system, taking a holistic approach. The integration of competency management with strategies is the unique contribution of this thesis. Furthermore, it is observed that companies primarily focus on technical competencies in competency management, and these competencies are often defined based on positions/roles within the companies and may not be up to date. Another unique aspect of this thesis is the inclusion of soft competencies in addition to technical competencies in the created competency index. Out of the 7 categories and 55 competencies in the list, 5 categories primarily consist of soft competencies. The study utilized survey research and case study methods, obtained radar charts based on strategies, and reported the analyses.Master Thesis Exploring Determinants of Micro-Mobility Adoption for Environmental Sustainability(01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe study focuses on the design of aquatic toys, which is a special area of industrial toy design in general. Many times, with their various aspects, toys have been among the research subjects of several specialties. Industrial design, which deals with the subject from various perspectives, especially "toy design", is one of these research and application areas. Although many academic studies have been carried out in the field of industrial toy design, it is seen that there is an academic gap especially in the industrial design of aquatic toys. Looking at the overall aquatic toy market, it is seen that inflatable PVC products dominate the market. This brings to mind the question of what new approaches could be in aquatic toy design. As an answer to this question, it can be said that the use of alternative materials has emerged as a remarkable option. In this sense, the idea of investigating the potentials of using PE pool noodles as an alternative design element/material in aquatic toy design constitutes the starting point of the study. In this study, an aquatic toy prototype proposal and its design process are presented in order to understand the potential of using PE pool noodles as a structural component of an aquatic toy and to exemplify the aquatic toy design which is the main subject of the research. The prototype had been evaluated by the potential users. Their comments had been depicted as findings of the analysis and suggested for further development.Master Thesis Engineering Concepts in Industrial Product Desing With a Case Study of Bicycle Desing(01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyColours have a crucial importance in human life. Humans use colours to give meaning to objects and to express their feelings, either visually either verbally. While colours and their associations may differ in different societies, their objectives in use are similar (like religious associations, status symbols, and to add aesthetic values, etc.). Whatever are the pleasures, styles or fashions of the time, the importance of colour’s role in desirability of an object remains constant. Especially, in the post-Industrial Revolution era with the progression the field of communication, the cultural differences between societies decreased. Thus at the 20 th Century with the international design movements colour became a common language in the field of design. When first released the means of the electrical domestic appliances were helping house-works. But in the 20 th century they changed identity and from bottom of the staircases and inside of cupboards, they took place on counter-tops and inside of the space lived-in. When this process is studied it is cleared out the role of colours on domestic appliances to gain their status. Considering too far apart and different from each other at first glance, colours and art, and house-works are parts of the same life; therefore their changes and progress’ are contemporaneously similar with the changes at the social life. In this work it is aimed to study the reasons of colour use in electrical domestic appliances, in historic, scientific and sociologic way. And by these means’ it is reached to the conclusion that the characteristics of the colour schemes and the nature of the task are in accordance in electrical domestic appliances.
