(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Kraiem, Mejdi; Başoğlu, Ahmet Nuri
Hearing aids come from the widest medical sector that involves many other sectors that they work in collaborations with. A hearing aid demand work in many aspects starting from auditory, psychologic ergonomic and technologic etc. pushing forward the product to reply user’s personal needs. Through the evolution of the hearing aids, the design tends to be miniaturized in response to the psychology or the comfort side of patients and the market respond positively. Minimizing items would be great in several respects but would also higher risk to be lost. As long as the hearing aid’s industries looking forward to improving and idealizing the product there will be a long journey in the future to match technologies and innovative design to come over those issues, there will be a lot to criticize and work on. This study started with a literature survey in order to construct a clear idea about the item and their impact on the user with or without it and collect any potential technologies for better user experience. Later qualitative studies, an interview in depth and satisfaction survey, in which Interview in depth was done with some audiometrist collecting their preview from their patients. The Interviews where recorded. Then comes the satisfaction survey destinated to the users of hearing aids. In the satisfaction survey, we took into consideration if the user has tried both behind the ear and completely inside the ear to see if there is any remarkable preference or rejection between both items. To sum up, this study case is to collect any failure or issues that might face the hearing aids users in aim to put the light on some potential solution to enhance the experience of the users. So do to marketing demand to the miniature of hearing aids caused by the stigmatization of users, factors and facts like battery life, technologies, invisibility or secrecy of hearing aids and fear of losing it should be considered to enhance and improve the experience of hearing aids users.

Semiotic Approach in Industrial Design Practice: Appropriation of Semiotics by Turkish Industrial Designers
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Kartalkaya, Dilara; Tunç Fox, Ayça
Industrial design has become a well-known and important discipline today. Industrial design is a truly interdisciplinary field, encompassing engineering, social sciences, economics and basic sciences. Overtime, the dynamics that affect the design discipline have become more oriented towards user and product. As the technology and the market develop, it has become ever increasingly difficult to impress the user with the designed product. It is necessary to give correct signals to the user with the designed product in order to attract their attention. It is a difficult but important step to bring the user and designer together at the same point. Accordingly this study thrives to explore whether semiotics have been integrated into the industrial design profession and to what extent. To this end, a survey with professional industrial designers in Izmir has been conducted to understand their use of semiotics in their practice.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017) Tarcan, Berilsu; Tunç Cox, Ayça
Many researchers have investigated and analysed specific craft traditions and their practice in Turkey. Traditional production techniques, craft and design of cultural objects and different handicrafts from Turkey have been important research subjects. However, definition of tradition, culture and craft have changed over time, and keeps changing. The influence of these elements on product design and how they shifted within time should be studied more extensively. This thesis explores one of the craft neighborhoods in Turkey and suggests new ways craft can be implemented into product design today. For this purpose, craft’s history and relation to design and technology is investigated. A part of the field study was conducted with students of industrial design at İstanbul Bilgi University, as a part of their 2nd year studio course; in which the students were paired with craftsmen in Kapalıçarşı area, one of the historic craft neighborhoods in İstanbul. A traditional craft from Turkey, silversmithing, is taken as an example and implemented into product design. Moreover, in-depth interviews were conducted with the silversmiths in the area, to question the situation of craft today, and outcomes were discussed in terms of how it can be related with product design.

Evaluating Adoption of Open Source Tools in Industrial Design Education
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2016) Aykul, Zeynep; Erkarslan, Önder
Open source tools can support industrial designers to follow technology and trends easily. If industrial designers start using open source tools in their design processes, they can overcome difficulties, and make the process easier. The first step of research showed that industrial design students have the difficulties in the specific tasks of design process such as design presentation, design research, design decision, concept generation and design documentation. In addition to difficult tasks, reasons of difficulties were also asked to build a connection between open source tools and the solutions of difficulties. In the second step of research, students’ approaches for open source tools’ use were analyzed with presentation and feedback session. However, taking feedback with a questionnaire were not enough to analyze their approach. For this reason, three different studies were designed to find the most effective way to see how industrial design students use open source tools in their design processes. The first two studies were accepted as pilot studies which were re-design workshop and open source tools’ usage in industrial design studio courses. Due to limitations and insufficient outcomes required the third studies which are simulation of open source community. The study aimed to create an effective environment which offers an experience of open source tools with all the elements such as source, sharing, contribution and community. Introduction to Design Thinking Course’ students participated the study in Industrial Product Design Department at Istanbul Technical University. They shared their term project as open source and open source community was created in the classroom. Thus, difficulties of students in the design process were aimed to overcome. The results indicated that students overcome difficulties of “Finding inspiration”, “Express concept correctly and quickly”, “Changing and developing ideas” and “Decision skills”.

Design Activism in Industrial Design: a Critical Analysis of the Main Scolary Discourse
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Çetin, Özgür Deniz; Tunç Cox, Ayça
Industrial design profession has developed continuingly throughout the twentieth century, cultivated, and became prevalent. Over the course of time, industrial design has also had some negative ramifications for people and the environment, caused by socio-economic and political developments such as industrialization and globalization. Nevertheless, industrial designers have not disregarded these developments, and their consequences, instead they have been searching to find some solutions to the negative outcomes within their own profession. This endeavour has created a concentrated thread of action, which can be defined as “design activism” as an aggregate term. The renowned examples of design activism discourse first appeared in the early 1970s. Passing through various phases, it has eventually become a major subject that attracts considerable attention from design profession. Design activism is commonly addressed as an approach or a viewpoint. However, this study postulates design activism as a movement; it has been influenced by social events and movements in conjunction with socio-economic and political developments and consequently, it has evolved into a movement within the industrial design profession. This study critically analyses design activism discourse over a group of publications which constitutes the core of the discourse, both in its historical context and cumulatively. The critical analysis of the discourse discloses the ideology of design activism, its relationship with other domains and subjects, its content and context, the objectives of design activism, and the course of action that is supposed to achieve the objectives. This analysis also allows me to identify the deficiencies of design activism movement. The study is concluded with a plausible roadmap which can be followed in the near future to achieve the objectives of design activism movement.
