Izmir Institute of Technology, 2024) İnceköse, Ülkü; İnceköse, Ülkü; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologySince their conceptual existence, prisons have been spaces used by the power to separate individuals who are considered to be disrupting the structure of society from the society. Concepts that have differentiated with the sociological and cultural structures of societies that have changed over time have also evolved their own spatial systems in accordance with their own changes. French researcher Michel Foucault's researches and theories on prisons have contributed to making them not just physical spaces, making their interactions with their environments visible, and making them a tool that provides a clearer understanding of their role in the transformation of cities and societies inherent in power. The concept of Heteratopia, which Foucault mentions in his work on the Other Space, is a concept that should be evaluated together with the imposition form based on principles developed with physical rules and the tools used by the power to produce itself, emerging in the network of relations, regarding understanding how spaces produce information after the 20th century. Intersections that meet this concept in cities also benefit an active role with some physical boundaries or administrative forms operated by the power. Buca Prison, which has been visible for years on the busiest street of the city with its sharp borders, has become a structure where such spatial relations diversify, dominate and become visible. Buca prison, which has seriously affected the built environment in which it is located, has defined new spatial boundaries arising from social relations for years. When these spatial boundaries are evaluated within the scope of Foucault's studies, new responses and information are produced. For all these reasons, this study analyzes how Buca was affected by Buca Prison, using archive scans and qualitative research method ve evaluated the spatial sections associated with the city with theoretical approaches from the perspective of Foucault.Master Thesis Relationship of Street Art and Public Space: Assessing the Short Term Impacts in the Case of Urla(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Kaya Erol, Nursen; Kaya Erol, Nursen; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyCinema in Turkey, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, has been a platform to reflect the images of the changing cities that have been affected by the cultural and economic transformations in the society. The purpose of this study is to examine the city of İzmir and its urban space characteristics as representations in cinema. Therefore, the scenes in the movies have been analyzed according to the representation of urban spaces in different periods, daily life presented in the scenes, as well as the transformation of urban spaces since 1950s. There are three stages in the study. Firstly, the films which were shot in İzmir by Turkish filmmakers have been listed. Then, as a determining factor, the movies which were shot in the urban spaces of İzmir have been considered. This study focuses on the movies which were shot within the boundary of the city. Secondly, the period between 1950 and 2016 has been divided into three sections. Films have been divided into periods according to the representation styles and subjects of films in between1950-2016. The reason for this is that the films, in which the subject, location representation, space typology, social and cultural life, etc. are similar, have been collected and examined together in a period. Thirdly, the symbolic urban spaces which are frequently at the foreground of the movies have been evaluated according to their transformations of morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional features. Consequently, this study contributes to the existing literature as it examines relation between the city and cinema through a large scale covering over 100 movies. It analyses the relationship between the represented urban spaces, and the development and transformation of the city on the basis of the urban history of İzmir. The results of the analyses have been discussed within the framework developed by Carmona et. al, under morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional dimensions of urban spaces. Keywords: Urban Public Space and Cinema, Cinema and the City, Representation of Urban Space in Cinema.Master Thesis Analysis of Urban Coffeehouses in the Context of Public Space Theories(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Canaran, Deniz; Çil, Ela; Çil, Ela; 02.02. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn this study, the development of place management, its constituent elements and the management of various public places in the case of İzmir have been investigated. Place management incorporates the effects of place making and place governance. By conducting literature reviews, place management was divided into the sub-topics of place development, place quality and place branding. In the scope of study, three international projects were examined regarding the aforementioned sub-topics, including the Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, New York High Line and Bryant Park. Additionally, in local context, semi-structured interview were conducted with the place managers of three sites in Izmir, all having different management schemes (Balçova Telpher, The Elevator Tower in Karataş and Sasalı Natural Life Park). Suitable infrastructure, a growth-supporting legal climate and the usage of technology are three essential factors for the development of an area. However, place development is also linked directly to the development of high quality places. Besides social and environmental factors, local administrations have to give an opportunity to such development. With good design and development of an area inevitably comes the branding of such a place. To this extent, it is critical to answer the question of how a public place can be successfully managed starting from the design phase. Not only initial costs, but also running costs need to be taken into consideration during this design phase, during implementation and monitoring. Therefore, by applying good place management, it is possible to ensure both internal continuity and the sustainability of its successes.Master Thesis Evaluating Effects of Urban Social Movements for Public Space on Urban Policies(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017) Sungur, Burcu; Özdemir, Semahat; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03.
