Rereading the Concept of Heterotopia: Buca Prison and Its Neighborhood
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Yılmaz, Ebru; Yılmaz, Ebru; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Since their conceptual existence, prisons have been spaces used by the power to separate individuals who are considered to be disrupting the structure of society from the society. Concepts that have differentiated with the sociological and cultural structures of societies that have changed over time have also evolved their own spatial systems in accordance with their own changes. French researcher Michel Foucault's researches and theories on prisons have contributed to making them not just physical spaces, making their interactions with their environments visible, and making them a tool that provides a clearer understanding of their role in the transformation of cities and societies inherent in power. The concept of Heteratopia, which Foucault mentions in his work on the Other Space, is a concept that should be evaluated together with the imposition form based on principles developed with physical rules and the tools used by the power to produce itself, emerging in the network of relations, regarding understanding how spaces produce information after the 20th century. Intersections that meet this concept in cities also benefit an active role with some physical boundaries or administrative forms operated by the power. Buca Prison, which has been visible for years on the busiest street of the city with its sharp borders, has become a structure where such spatial relations diversify, dominate and become visible. Buca prison, which has seriously affected the built environment in which it is located, has defined new spatial boundaries arising from social relations for years. When these spatial boundaries are evaluated within the scope of Foucault's studies, new responses and information are produced. For all these reasons, this study analyzes how Buca was affected by Buca Prison, using archive scans and qualitative research method ve evaluated the spatial sections associated with the city with theoretical approaches from the perspective of Foucault.

Urban vitality represents active street life in cities. Pedestrian density and diversity of the streets, which are the most important public spaces for cities, and also variety of pedestrian activity on the streets are the urban vitality indicators. Urban vitality enhances social interaction and sense of belonging by bringing together the people from different groups for different purposes at different times of the day. Vital urban areas is the basis for creating safe, sustainable and successful urban environments. Researches argue that urban form components of residential areas encourage or limit urban vitality. Accordingly, this thesis examines the impact of urban form on urban vitality. Urban vitality studies in Turkey are mostly conducted in the the historic city centers or central business districts. There is an important literature gap about determining the level of urban vitality of an urban area in residential areas at urban block scale. Assessing urban vitality at the urban block scale is crucial to creating socially and economically sustainable residential areas. The aim of the thesis is to asssess and measure the impact of urban vitality factors related to urban form on urban vitality. In this direction, it is aimed to reveal the relationship between urban form and urban vitality through a case study. Within the scope of the thesis, two zones representing different urban forms are selected in the Yenikale neighborhood in Narlıdere District of Izmir as a case study area. Firstly, pedestrian counting is carried out in 5 different streets for each zone in order to determine the urban vitality level of the zones. Then, urban form data of the zones are collected and analyzed. Finally, the factors affecting urban vitality are evaluated by scoring method. In addition, according to the findings of the thesis, recommendations are provided to increase the urban vitality. (Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Yılmaz, Ebru; Yılmaz, Ebru; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
The future is one of the fundamental concerns of humanity. In these days, where the main purpose is to ensure the continuity of life, the concept of sustainability comes to the fore in order to ensure this continuity. Although the concept of sustainability has equal dimensions as "economic, environmental and social", sustainability in society is generally highlighted with its environmental and economic dimensions. The social dimension of sustainability has attracted attention due to the increasing social problems in society. This thesis aims to determine the role of urban green spaces in achieving social sustainability. Urban green spaces, which are the most easily accessible public spaces, have been selected to research social sustainability because the reflections of social problems in society can easily be seen in these spaces. Within the scope of this thesis, firstly, a literature review was made to understand the position of social sustainability in the concept of sustainability. After exploring different social sustainability approaches, a framework consisting of social sustainability dimensions was determined to ensure the assessment of social sustainability. Then, the development process of urban green spaces as public spaces was investigated, and the relationship between urban green spaces and key social sustainability dimensions were examined. After the theoretical framework, İnciraltı City Forest was studied as a case study. In the case study, the social sustainability dimensions in the area were evaluated with a questionnaire study. This thesis shows that urban green spaces support key dimensions such as sense of belonging, equality and human rights which are necessary for achieving social sustainability.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Eyecioğlu, Hilal; Can Traunmüller, Işın; Can Traunmüller, Işın; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Cinema in Turkey, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, has been a platform to reflect the images of the changing cities that have been affected by the cultural and economic transformations in the society. The purpose of this study is to examine the city of İzmir and its urban space characteristics as representations in cinema. Therefore, the scenes in the movies have been analyzed according to the representation of urban spaces in different periods, daily life presented in the scenes, as well as the transformation of urban spaces since 1950s. There are three stages in the study. Firstly, the films which were shot in İzmir by Turkish filmmakers have been listed. Then, as a determining factor, the movies which were shot in the urban spaces of İzmir have been considered. This study focuses on the movies which were shot within the boundary of the city. Secondly, the period between 1950 and 2016 has been divided into three sections. Films have been divided into periods according to the representation styles and subjects of films in between1950-2016. The reason for this is that the films, in which the subject, location representation, space typology, social and cultural life, etc. are similar, have been collected and examined together in a period. Thirdly, the symbolic urban spaces which are frequently at the foreground of the movies have been evaluated according to their transformations of morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional features. Consequently, this study contributes to the existing literature as it examines relation between the city and cinema through a large scale covering over 100 movies. It analyses the relationship between the represented urban spaces, and the development and transformation of the city on the basis of the urban history of İzmir. The results of the analyses have been discussed within the framework developed by Carmona et. al, under morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional dimensions of urban spaces. Keywords: Urban Public Space and Cinema, Cinema and the City, Representation of Urban Space in Cinema.

This thesis, with its general scope, aims to investigate the position of the public space, in the socio-cultural context. For this research, coffee houses are examined as micro public spaces. In doing so, this study reveals two different literature review. The first literature is an examination of the emergence of coffeehouses in history. Since its discovery, coffee has become a popular consumer good that has had a global value, and coffee consumption has become one of our everyday practices with its tagged along routines. This daily practice has created its spatial types of space and has led coffeehouses and cafes to emerge in different forms in many geographies. The second literature survey includes different descriptions and classifications of public space. Since public space research is the product of an interdisciplinary field, there are different definitions and various theoretical approaches to the public space. While correlating the two literature review, this thesis investigates the relationship between public space and coffeehouses also in two main contexts which are the political and social examination of the public space. Collaterally, coffeehouses were also studied through these two contexts. In other words, this study aims deal coffeehouses as micro-public spaces with these two different contexts to reveal their various forms in different histories and geographies. In the last chapter, this thesis concluded that coffeehouses were transformed in parallel with the changes in public space and social structure and since the day they opened they received many different public practices due to their pluralistic pattern.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2017) İnanç, Eray Mustafa; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; Velibeyoğlu, Koray; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
In this study, the development of place management, its constituent elements and the management of various public places in the case of İzmir have been investigated. Place management incorporates the effects of place making and place governance. By conducting literature reviews, place management was divided into the sub-topics of place development, place quality and place branding. In the scope of study, three international projects were examined regarding the aforementioned sub-topics, including the Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, New York High Line and Bryant Park. Additionally, in local context, semi-structured interview were conducted with the place managers of three sites in Izmir, all having different management schemes (Balçova Telpher, The Elevator Tower in Karataş and Sasalı Natural Life Park). Suitable infrastructure, a growth-supporting legal climate and the usage of technology are three essential factors for the development of an area. However, place development is also linked directly to the development of high quality places. Besides social and environmental factors, local administrations have to give an opportunity to such development. With good design and development of an area inevitably comes the branding of such a place. To this extent, it is critical to answer the question of how a public place can be successfully managed starting from the design phase. Not only initial costs, but also running costs need to be taken into consideration during this design phase, during implementation and monitoring. Therefore, by applying good place management, it is possible to ensure both internal continuity and the sustainability of its successes.

Place-Making: Examination of Practices in Turkey
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Kuru, Ömür Damla; Saygın, Nicel; Saygın, Nicel; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Place-making is an approach which represents a comprehensive framework in building public places with a major concern of assigning functions in an ongoing process. The major point that place-making distinguishes from the former approaches is underlining the process of making instead of the certain product of design. This thesis is a descriptive study which aims to explain the making process of contemporary practice in Turkey. The perceptions of privacy and publicness concepts in Turkish Culture are different than they are in Western Culture. These two cultures are similarly affected by recent movements against top-down policies which lead commodification of commons. Pressures cause reactions such as Wall Street Occupation and Occupation of Tahrir Square. When we consider Turkey, we see that the place-making process is driven by NGOs and platforms that advocate right to the city similar to worldwide movements. In this thesis place-making process in Turkey is introduced with its traditional background and its contemporary break through. Three types of bottom-up movements are taken as cases that are selected from Istanbul, the primary city of Turkey and under a great pressure of construction. Gezi Park Occupation, Kuzguncuk Farm Reaction and Don Quixote House Occupation and Yeldeğirmeni Neighborhood Revitalization are analyzed through main components of making process; actors, processes and outcomes. It is remarked that place-making process draws a distinct identity rather than the traditional approach to public places and aims to protect commons by advocating right to the city in different social contexts that reflect the complexity of place-making process.

Stairways as Spatial Elements in an Urban Environment
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Taşke, Neşe; Gençel, Ziya; Gencel, Ziya; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This study is focused on determining the design criteria for creating livable and democratic stairways, which are a part of the public space, that would enhance social interactions by providing all day long safe and comfortable use by residents as well as passers-by through analysing the physical aspects in order to lay out the functional problems. Stairways, which at first were a symbol of power or were a path to gods, after the beginning of public life, sharing urban space, circulation, pedestrian movement, created paths that evolved through topographic obstacles to become connections between different levels that required new designs and arrangements. The intricate relation between stairways, street-life and urban social life leave the stairways neglected through the changes in public life where the streets filled with obstacles are becoming gateways to residences. On the other hand stairways in the past have always been urban spaces which housed social life with all its features by looking at evidence of works in literature, music and cinema through time. Street characteristics have an important role in the urban setting as they evolve with public life reflecting its social, cultural and economic status. Because of the above reasons outdoor spaces are to be designed considering the social, cultural properties, needs and requests of the residents. and passers-by.s keeping track of the harmony with the environment. The study, at this point, stresses that stairways, although cannot house all outdoor activities, are more than mere elements of between levels circulation elements due to their capacity of a bearing many functions. The necessity of considering the variety of behaviours, needs and requests of differing age and user groups when designing is another issue pointed out in this study. Although stairways have the advantage of being isolated from vehicle traffic they still pose problems to the handicapped and elderly. Inspite the unavailability of ramp implementation in some cases stairways are still the playground for kids. The case study area is Güzelyalı district in İzmir, which has a variety of stairways with different characteristics. The stairways in the area have been classified with reference to their functions in the past, and their evolved functions due to increase in population and wear in time. The current physical and social situation of these stairways have been analysed with observation, photographing, inquiries etc. These methods provided a stronger foundation for discriminating the needs and requirements of the users, by a participative approach, in order to put forward design methods that would create an environmental quality to reach these goals. The study states that stairways, in addition to being safe paths for necessary activities, should promote optional and social activities to take place on them. This can be obtained by designs that are motivating, exiting, implemented such that they are connected to other public spaces, enhance environmental quality with sensible use of design elements a outdoor furniture.Key words: urban space, public space, stairway, steps, pedestrian, stairway activities, access, social interaction, environment quality.
