Cinema in Turkey, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, has been a platform to reflect the images of the changing cities that have been affected by the cultural and economic transformations in the society. The purpose of this study is to examine the city of İzmir and its urban space characteristics as representations in cinema. Therefore, the scenes in the movies have been analyzed according to the representation of urban spaces in different periods, daily life presented in the scenes, as well as the transformation of urban spaces since 1950s. There are three stages in the study. Firstly, the films which were shot in İzmir by Turkish filmmakers have been listed. Then, as a determining factor, the movies which were shot in the urban spaces of İzmir have been considered. This study focuses on the movies which were shot within the boundary of the city. Secondly, the period between 1950 and 2016 has been divided into three sections. Films have been divided into periods according to the representation styles and subjects of films in between1950-2016. The reason for this is that the films, in which the subject, location representation, space typology, social and cultural life, etc. are similar, have been collected and examined together in a period. Thirdly, the symbolic urban spaces which are frequently at the foreground of the movies have been evaluated according to their transformations of morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional features. Consequently, this study contributes to the existing literature as it examines relation between the city and cinema through a large scale covering over 100 movies. It analyses the relationship between the represented urban spaces, and the development and transformation of the city on the basis of the urban history of İzmir. The results of the analyses have been discussed within the framework developed by Carmona et. al, under morphological-social, visual-temporal and functional dimensions of urban spaces. Keywords: Urban Public Space and Cinema, Cinema and the City, Representation of Urban Space in Cinema.

Cities are complicated and dynamic structures. Urban agenda has changed constantly. Urban planning has to follow and reshape this dynamism as a return. Cities are under constant restructuring with parallel to spatial, economic, social and political conditions. In recent years, urban transformation has become turning point in planning system and occupied dominant role as a policy tool in Turkish context. Urban transformation has come to the planning agenda as an indispensable policy tool. Especially in the last two decades, urban transformation projects became a tool of spatial restructuring processes and solving major problems such as illegal housing, disaster risk, and uncontrolled urban sprawl. Moreover, with the generalization and reinterpretation of the context of transformation caused conceptual and practical confusion. The implementation of the urban transformation projects is taken place almost in all Turkish cities; however, it has felt more in big metropolitan cities as in the case of first Istanbul and then Ankara. The city of İzmir, seems to be subjected to all these discussions. This study first discusses the urban transformation concept as a tool of planning, by clarifying its principles on a global scale. After, it evaluates Turkey’s performance on a holistic approach, which means all interventions that caused transformation at the citywide level in the case of İzmir central areas. The analysis has conducted using multidimensional spatial data in GIS database in relation to general policies and legislation. All urban transformations projects in İzmir have digitalized geographically on a map to evaluate their location and attributes in relation to urban plans. As a result of these analyses, it has been concluded that despite the urban transformation concept was proposed as a solution to problems of the cities, it has evolved into a new problematic because of fragmented and speculative rent seeking activities or ineffective applications. The study aims to highlight these deficiencies and offer solutions.

This thesis is about the urban social movements for public space which defend, reclaim and add use value to urban public spaces. The main aim of the study is to examine the achievements and the effects of these movements to urban policies. The study consists of two main parts. In first part, the conceptual researches were carried out. The concepts of the public space and the right to the city were examined. It was examined what are the urban social movements for public space and in which ways they changed within the historical processes. The research was carried out as part of European and American cities as well as including some cities in Turkey. In the second part, the city of İzmir was chosen for case studies. The urban social movements for public space in İzmir were examined beginning from 1990s. The achievements of these movements and the fact how much presence they establish in urban policies were also evaluated. In case studies, various publications were examined and a media and social media review were carried out; some methods such as direct observation and interview were used. It is concluded in the study that these movements can have a positive effect upon urban policies. While the study is concluded with a comparison between İzmir and the other cities examined within the study; some suggestions were offered to city dwellers that they should continue defending public spaces and to local governments that they should incorporate the ideas and energies of city dwellers in urban planning by working with them.
