Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis thesis investigates .Manufacturing design for productivity. surveying a case study of an assembly line for air conditioning control panels. The main aim is to investigate the possibilities of operational improvement on the production time in a cost-effective manner. The specific objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between manufacturing design and productivity issues. In order to achieve the objective of this study, a methodology has been developed. First a thorough literature survey is conducted. The use of methods engineering in the factory system is explained, then the relationships between analytical techniques of methods engineering are discussed. Then examples related to subject are investigated. Later on, an assembly line is selected as the case study. An ex-assembly is redesigned by using the concepts of methods engineering. Then both cases are analyzed and discussed in terms of their output capacity and manufacturing time. After the analysis of MTM for redesigned assembly line it is observed that we can reduce production cycle time 20 % at the end of this study. And this development project has been chosen for investment. At the end of this project, we increased the production quantity from 600 pcs. to 800 pcs. Because efficiency of workers have increased with the redesigned assembly line, production of the goods of quantity increased 13 % more than originally calculated. The new assembly line is reduce the operators waiting time and increases their efficiency. The ex-assembly line was covering 13,5m² square it reduce to 3,6 m². Finally, because of efficiency and productivity increase of this study, totally we observed 33 % production increase for the same period of time. By the standardization and the elimination of the operations, and reducing the labor cost the factory could increase its competitive strength.Master Thesis Design and Management of Brand Identity With an Action Research in Turkish Fashion Industry(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Sencer, Göze; Özcan, Ahmet Can; Özcan, Ahmet Can; Kipöz, Şölen; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThis thesis studies design and managementof brand identity, considering emotion concepts. It is an action research thesis, which focused on achieving answers to two main questions: 1. How is brand identity designed, in order to create an emotional experience? 2. How are emotions directed to brand identity are measured, and thus provide a base for management of brand identity?(based on the widely accepted business argument that .nothing can be managed without measuring.Today, it is widely accepted that marketing and customers have evolved. The perceptions of brands and products have shifted from functionality or usability aspects to experiential and emotional aspects. Customers want to be excited about a product, surprised about a service, or desiring about a brand. As a result; design of brand identity elements (as well as products) needed to be reviewed and emphasized, and new metrics are needed; for this era. In other words; new research and measurement methods is needed for the new era.As this thesis. research method is action research, with dual aims both for action and research, the action part of this research is carried out with Jimmy Key© brand (brand name changed to JKEY© at the end of the action research, in 2004), which is a Turkish fashion brand that sells sports and casual wear to a young and educatedaudience in national and international markets.Researches in this work aimed to increase understanding of the theories and concepts related with brand identity and emotion. Literature review starts with an explanation of the evolution of marketing concepts from 1900.s; where the idea in action was mass consumption, to 21st century; where the experience economy dominates. Mood consumption is offered as a new marketing perspective for this age.The concepts reviewed in this thesis that are related with emotional design of brand are .Brand identity., .Brand Positioning., .Emotions., .Emotional Experiences. and .Moods., .Fashion. (from a social and economic view), .Personalization andCustomization. and .Emotional Branding.. The emotional instruments in brand research are psycho physiological instruments; facial expressions, voice and self report measures. A remarkable tool that uses facial, vocal and bodily expressions elicited by design of products is PrEmo tool of Desmet.Actions of this work focused on reviewing the current literature with an emotional consideration, and to brought about change in Jimmy Key© brand identity with various designs, and proposed consumer research methods and tools for measuring, and thus for managing, brand identity, in which the concepts of emotion could be taken into consideration. The proposed designs (including logo, naming, advertisements, tags, bags, packaging, catalog, shop windows.etc.) and the proposed brand measurement instruments (including questionnaires, focus groups, brand collages, shopping tests and finally the proposed instrument .MyBetie.) constitute the action part of this action research. All the proposed designs in this work are considered as physiological, sociological, psychological, ideological experiences of the brand identity similar to Jordan.s four-pleasure framework.Among the entire brand researches in action were very time consuming and high cost; while they were very crucial and beneficial for brand positioning and future tracking. So a need for a more effective instrument, which is also capable of measuring emotions, is realized. Thus, four brand research methods used in action were integrated into a new proposed instrument. And being a unique; personalized, cost effective, quick response brand research and measurement instrument; .MyBetie. is proposed at the end of the thesis.Master Thesis Industrial Product Design by Using Two-Dimensional Material in the Context of Origamic Structure and Integrity(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2004) Yiğit, Nergiz; Seçkin, Yavuz; Seçkin, Yavuz; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThroughout the history of industrial product design, there have always been attempts to shape everyday objects from a single piece of semi-finished industrial materials such as plywood, sheet metal, plastic sheet and paper-based sheet. One of the ways to form these two-dimensional materials into three-dimensional products is bending following cutting. Similar concepts of this spatial transformation are encountered in the origami form, which has a planar surface in unfolded state, then transforms to a three-dimensional state by folding or by folding following cutting. If so, conceptually it may be useful to think of one-axis bending, which is a manufacturing technique, is somewhat similar to folding paper. In this regard, the studies in the scope of computational origami, which light the way for real-world problems such as how sheets of material will behave under stress, have applications especially in .manufacturing phase. of industrial product design.Besides manufacturing phase, origami design is also used as a product design tool either in .concept creating phase. (in the context of its concepts) or in 'form creating phase' (in the context of its design principles). In this thesis, the designing of industrial products, which are made from sheet material, is presented in a framework that considers the origami design. In the theoretical framework, evolutionary progression of origami design is discussed briefly in order to comprehend the situation of origami design in distinct application fields. Moreover, the elements, principles, basics of origami design and origamic structures are generally introduced. The theoretical framework is completed with the descriptions of the concepts on origami design and origamic structures. In the practical framework, typical applications that have origamic structures in distinct industrial product fields are exemplified. Furthermore, sheet materials and their bending process are taken up separately. By means of its excessive advantages, sheet metal bending is particularly emphasized. The practical framework is completed with several case studies base on sheet metal bending. Finally, the study is concluded with the evaluation of the origamic-structured product in respect of good design principles. Furthermore, designing by considering origami design is recommended to designer to design a good industrial product.Master Thesis Designing for Experience: Example Experience Design Projects on Workspace(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Önal, Özgür; Özcan, Ahmet Can; Özcan, A. Can; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe great experiences can be deliberate and are based upon principles that have been proven. This thesis study explored the most important of these principles before the practical study. After that, the study focused on making a practical study on the workspace domain in three main phases. In the data collecting phase, experience data was collected for a workspace domain by observing workspace activities. Used methods were photographing, informal interviews, field notes and ethnographic observation. In the data modeling phase, a data model were constructed. Pattern language was used as a base for re-modeling the experience data. The data model is simply a framework that allows the designer to document, collect, communicate and understand all design related information quickly and easily. During the design phase, this framework became the design guideline and was used as a roadmap for every single design idea.Framework also gives the opportunity of defining relations from patterns to patterns and from design ideas to patterns. This flexible opportunity lets the designer visualize experience scenarios with design ideas in a higher level of understanding. Framework has a special data encapsulation format which is inherited from pattern language. According to that format, short pattern names, short essence paragraphs and other sections makes easier to remember, communicate and connect the patterns with new ideas. At the end of the design phase, three different products which are actively related with the experience patterns were designed.Master Thesis A Critical Approach on "synergetic Geometry" of Buckminster Fuller(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2005) Dündar, Ali; Erkarslan, Önder; Erkarslan, Önder; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologySynergetic Geometry is a new geometry apprehension that R. Buckminster Fuller constituted its theoretical and practical underpinnings. In fact, Synergetic Geometry was a consequence of an experienced process that was developed by Fuller in his four design products and finally, materialized in Geodesic Dome. This study will focus on Synergetic Geometry of Fuller, and its reflections and its development levels on his products.Fuller criticizes industrial design as being non-industrialized practice, and criticizes industrial designers as being pure interior and exterior decorators. On the contrary, Fuller describes industrial design as interdisciplinary profession. Thus, industrial design cannot be undertaken as decoration and ornament. It is a whole system that includes different constituents and sciences, and it has to be handled as a design science and industrialized practice, rather than non-industrialized practice. Seen from this vantage point, Fuller innovated to the profession of industrial design by his products and his design conceptions. The aims of this study are the analysis of the four experiences which were the milestones of the .Synergetic Geometry. that is the destination of the thought derived from a geometrical analogy; and, the process of materialisation of the Synergetic Geometry that is elaborated in the context of the conceptual tools of Fuller (complementarity, system and synergy, and tensegrity) which constituted the Synergetic Geometry thought. Despite the fact that the four experiences of Fuller (Dymaxion Bathroom, Dymaxion Car, Dymaxion Deployment Unit, Wichita House) were marketable.easily convertible to cash.and proper to mass-production; they remained avant-garde in terms of becoming threshold products for further developments. For that reason, this study will also concentrate on his four experiences from the point of view that their crucial roles in design history have to be emphasized.Master Thesis The Indigenous Product Concept in Relation To International Design Industry: The Instruments Used in Preparing and Driking Tea and Coffee in Turkish Culture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2006) Arslan, Esra; Kidöz, Şölen; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe scope of thesis is to explain the relation of the domestic product identities with the design industry. In order to identify the cultural identity, the craft and design concepts have been examined and the culture concept in design has been taken into consideration. The relation of globalization and localization concepts with the design industry has been analyzed. As a domestic product the tea and coffee making instruments had been explained. Moreover, the product samples designed to make tea and coffee were examined. Today the Turkish identity in design field has not been constituted yet. This thesis has been aimed to be considered as an example for Turkish design. As conclusion, the local product reflects the identity of the culture where it belongs to. The product should protect its own cultural values in order to take part in international circulation. The product should have the harmony with that culture to be recognized by the other cultures.
