Master Thesis The Reflections of Modernization in Turkey on the Architectural Artifacts of Izmir Culturepark Between 1930-1950(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Pöğün, Yüksel; Eyüce, ÖzenThis study aims to analyze the movements of modern architecture following the foundation of the Turkish Republic, through the Culturepark in izmir. The analyses will cover the period between 1930 and 1950, starting with the foundation of the Turkish Republic and covering the initial planning phase of the izmir Fair and Culturepark idea.The modernisation and Westernization trends in architecture in Turkey during the specified period are observed in the izmir Culturepark. The political ideology, involving the attributes of the single party system, and the prevailing economical conditions, reflecting the state socialism approach, had important influence on the changing understanding in architectural expression. These reflections concern both the inclusion of the Culturepark in the urban design of izmir and the temporary pavilion buildings designed and constructed for the izmir International Fair. These characteristics make the izmir Fair different from comparable InternationalFairs of the World and give a unique identity: The International Fair in izmir of Turkey. Furthermore, in addition to providing a medium to display the technological advancements of the time, like other similar fairs, the izmir International Fair has been aimed to be a demonstration of the political, social, or economicpower of a nation, that has just conquerred the war independence. The objective of the Fair was to show the world and the citizens of Turkey, the determination of the young Turkish Republic in modernisation through reforms.Analyzing the form and design characteristics of architectural artifacts in the izmir Culturepark will reflect the existing architectural understanding of the period as well as providing insights relating to future developments.Master Thesis Architectural Reflections of the Political Thresholds During Interwar Years (1914-1945)(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Emir, Özgür Deniz; Eyüce, ÖzenThis thesis claims that political power and ideology have the ability to transform the building forms of architecture and that power uses architecture as the ideological symbols of the regime in the interactive relationship of 'Architecture and Politics'. The study examines this relationship in Russia, Germany, Italy and Turkey which are experiencing political thresholds during the' Interwar Years' (1914-1945). The architectural reflections of political thresholds have been discussed through architectural trends, styles, built environment and urbanism. Formal and conceptual analyses and readings have been performed in order to determine the architectural transformations and variations that are parallel to political developments, architectural trends before and after the political thresholds have been analyzed comparatively. The concepts that exist similarly both in political ideologies and architectural end-products have been studied with the aim of finding the interaction between 'Architecture and Politics'. These analyses have led to a conclusion that political interference, transforms architectural trends due to its ideologies; monumentality, grandeur, axiality, symmetry order and hierarchy as a result exist in the created architectural language due to this political interference.Master Thesis Transformation in Architectural Drawing:a Study on the Representation of Space During the Renaissance and Avant-Grade(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Duruk. R. Kıvılcım; Eyüce, ÖzenThis study presents a critical look on the architectural drawing, including its reflections and more complex realities behind it. The transformations in architectural drawing as a language of thought have been analysed with the help of two eminent periods; the Renaissance and the Avant-garde. These periods excelled with the representation of their space perception as the most valuable periods in the history of architectural drawing. To gain an accurate evaluation during the study, a contextual reconstruction of the selected periods have been necessary. This "reconstruction" includes the position of the architect, the design methodologies, the role of drawing. Perspective and axonometry drawings are studied as pioneering tools to express the architect's abstract creation, and his ideologies on architectural space in the history of architectural drawing. Keywords: Architectural representation, architectural drawing, space abstract reduction.Master Thesis The Concept of Equilibrium and Its Effects of Change From Static To Dynamic on Architectural End-Products(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) İnceköse, Ülkü; Eyüce, ÖzenAll of the objectslbuildings on the earth can stand due to their structural orders.Standing of a structural order without suffering any damage (broken down, collapsing ... ) is the result of their state of equilibrium. The most important factor effecting the state of equilibrium of any structural order is the force of gravity.Differantiation in the structural orders formed under this stable effect can be explained by the change in the concept of equilibrium. Therefore, analysing the change in architectural and engineering end-products could only be done by understanding the change in the concept of equilibrium.Scientific developments are the basic factors causing the changes in the concept of equilibrium. Reflections of these developments on concrete products is both in the types of load transfer of structural order and in visual expression of order.Consequently, in the scope of the thesis, depending on developments in the science reflections of the change in the concept of equilibrium on concrete products is tried to be explained by structural and geometrical analses. Expression of these analyses are made through the relationship between equilibrium and movement. It is concluded that the change in the structural orders basing on an acceptance of basic physics that "an object is either stable or movable "; is from structures having no motion to structures having any kind of motion (having tendency to move and/or moving). In other words, it can be said that, this change is from immobile structures having whole connection with the ground, to structures trying to remove from the ground.At the end, in today, it is possible to discuss about solutions having different equilibrium orders that is seen/will be seen basing on scientific developments.Generally it is possible to classify these solutions as solutions that can be expressed by different geometrical orders or solutions towards to be independent from the force of gravity.in the light of these determinations the aim of the thesis is to determine changes in the concept of equilibrium and to analyse their effects on structural end-products and to give some clues about their future effects.Keywords: Structural equilibrium, structural balance, gravity, geometry, energy, structural order.Master Thesis A Research on Structural Design Approaches Within the Scope of Theory and Application(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Korkmaz, Koray; Eyüce, ÖzenThe integration of creative, imaginative and economically feasible structures into the design process of _buildings has always been an essential issue in the history of architecture. The aim of this study is; to explore the relationship between the design of structural systems and the formation of architectural space, to display the changes in structure/space relationship in respect to scientific progress from the beginning of the age of positivism until today. This study is structured in two parts. At first, a morphological classification is made within a retrospective overview to explore the relationship of structure and space. Secondly, the age of positivism and the effects of positivism on architectural theories are explored to determine the changes in structure/space relationship. Today, the new developments in architectural space concept, such as "dynamic stability" affects the design of structures. Still, it is clear that the structure is an indispensable necessity during the process of shaping the space and architectural end product "building", whether the space is static or dynamic.Master Thesis Prison Architecture a Typological Analysis of Spatial Organizations in Respect To Punishment Systems(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2002) Dokgöz, G. Deniz; Eyüce, Emine Özen; Eyüce, ÖzenThe concepts of crime and punishment have always been a part of culture in every society throughout the history of mankind. However, the acts accepted as .crime. and the penalties imposed upon criminals for the same crime have revealed differences in each society and in each era. Prior to the Modern Age, almost in all societies, punishment was an open public activity to warn people and imprisonment was not a way of punishment; instead it was only a measure impeding the criminal.s escape until the execution of punishment. Modern world, at the beginning, has tried to use punishment for dictating definite .norms. instead of frightening; later on, instead of corporal execution some other punishment systems have been used as a means of creating individuals submitting to the authority on the way to the formation of inspection oriented .New Society.. This new approaches in punishment systems has required spatial and organizational solutions. As a result, prisons in which imprisonment would be executed have developed as a new building type requiring architectural design as other new building types developed during modernization. However, prison architecture is different from all other buildings as an architectural end product. This architectural product is such a place that whoever stays in never wants to live in there and wants to get out it as soon as possible since there is no relation between the spatial properties of the building and the preferences of a person staying in it, in other words, the criminal. Although debate on prison buildings seems to be a current issue in public opinion, discussions on the spatial organizations of prisons. coincides with the of F-type applications of Ministry of Justice in Turkey. On the other hand, the problems of this building type haven.t been examined enough in terms of architectural design approaches. It is important to discuss how prisons. spatial design have been developed throughout the history; and which architectural properties a prison has to have today must be considered. Whether a prison system, in which the person serving his/her sentence will not be damaged both physically and mentally by public authority, environment and other criminals during its detention period, is created or not, or relevance of the created spaces to the prevailing understanding of punishment and their appropriateness to its functions should also be studied. Therefore, this study aims at understanding prison architecture., their development and change in relation to changing social structures. A typological analysis on case studies is used to understand their spatial organizations in a retrospective perspective. Key words: Crime, Punishment, Prison, Prison Architecture, Type, and Typology.Master Thesis Cultural and Local Diversities in Contemporary Architecture:an Evaluation on the Regionalist Trends in 20th Century Turkish Architecture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Çaylan, Didem; Eyüce, Emine Özen; Eyüce, ÖzenThis study focuses on the cultural and local diversities observed in 20th century architectural theory and practice, and especially the regionalist discourse in architecture, which can be evaluated as their categoric correspondent. Evaluating the concepts and influences behind the evolution of an architectural practice inspired by a sensitivity towards cultural and local conditions, this study claims that cultural and local diversities in 20th century architecture and their formulation as regionalism are rooted in the basic tension between the universal and particular, which has been present in Western culture since Enlightenment. Due to the conceptualization of the world in terms of bipolar contsructs such as universal and particular, rational and romantic, industrialized and indigenous and modern and traditional the urge to preserve cultural and local essence has often been formulated as a revolt against the universalizing forces of industrialization and modernization. In order to put the concept of regionalism into its historical context the study overviews the claims of regionality, nationality and contextuality that have been influential on architectural practice since 19th century. The regionalist approaches that have generated after World War II have been evaluated with reference to the varying concerns that they respond to. Referring to the significant theoretical works on the subject the viability of the regionalism as a valid critical approach in contemporary architecture has been discussed through a simultaneous study of regional(ist) works and their underlying ideas.This conceptual framework has been used to evaluate the contextualist, regionalist and nationalist discourses that have been influential in Turkish architecture as a consequence of the revolts against the imported "international style". The study focuses on the discussions on national and cultural identity that still occupy the Turkish architectural agenda, and evaluates the position of Turkish architectural practice within the construct of center - periphery. Considering that claims of regionality have often been used as a means of legitimization in Turkish architecture, the validity of the concepts behind regionalist practice have been challenged with reference to the current debates in mainstream architecture.Keywords: Modernity and tradition, center and periphery, universal and local, identity, regionalism, contextualism, nationalism, critical modernism, postmodernity, contemporary Turkish Architecture.Master Thesis Perception of Space Through Representation Media: a Comparison Between 2d Representation Techniques and 3d Virtual Environments(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2005) Akgün, Yenal; Eyüce, ÖzenFor centuries, 2D drawing techniques such as plans, sections and elevations have been the main communication media for the profession of architecture. Addition to these techniques, for two decades, computer based representation techniques and 3D virtual environments (VE) have also entered to the profession of architecture. Effects of these computer based techniques on perception of space have always been interrogated by several researches.Although these researches generally regarded these computerized techniques as better and proper than conventional techniques, in some cases conventional techniques can be more effective to depict architectural space. Main aim of this thesis is to compare and evaluate the positive effects and shortcomings of 3D virtual environments and 2D conventional representation techniques in the context of perception of architectural space. Parallel to this objective, the thesis also aims to show the differentiation in perception of space with the change of representation media. To show these differences, a comparative method is used. As the main step of the application of this method, an experimental case study and survey has been constituted for comparing 2D conventional techniques and 3D computer based techniques. In this survey, 38 first yearstudents from Izmir Institute of technology have taken place as test subject.According to the results of this comparative case study, contributions and shortcomings of 2D conventional representation techniques and 3D computer based techniques on improving the capability of architects on perception of the space have been determined.Master Thesis An Analytical Approach To the Concept of 'topography in Architecture(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2003) Muyan, Cem; Eyüce, ÖzenThe symbiosis of man and nature reveals their diverging interrelations, which are based on man's shifting idea of nature throughout history. These alterations in man's conception of nature have changed his attitudes towards it, thus his creations in relation with topography. Hence, within the scope of the study, the idea of nature, exploring its shifted meanings, is analyzed in order to contemplate the relationship between manmade and natural environment. Being guided by the urge to anchor to the world, man has always been in search of establishing somehow ideal relationship between manmade and natural environment within which topography remains as the most prominent concept in the context of physical surrounding. Therefore, the concept of topography is handled as the main concern of the thesis. By means of treating topographical formations whether as sacred places or as physical aspect of the world with which to create intimate relationship or as mere subordinate elements, man testifies that topography has had differing impression on his mind in accord with his idea of nature.In today's world where everything may be questioned about its authenticity or its state of being natural, the concept of topography in contemporary architecture, which has also an artificial sense and very different understanding than its precedent conception, is aimed to be explored while revealing its roots.Consequently, in the context of the study, besides the investigation of the changes in the conception of nature and its reflections on manmade environment, the concept of topography is examined in order to disclose the changes in its meaning that direct the way man deals with it.
