Master Thesis Surroundings of Metro Stations as Public Spaces: User Perceptions in the Cases in İzmir(01. Izmir Institute of Technology, 2022) Aksoy, Serenay; Şenol, FatmaMetro stations are public transport stops with functional parts of the transport system. Moreover, these stations and their surroundings are public spaces where people as a group or individually come together for different purposes and use these spaces for resting, spending time, and entertainment. In addition to the functionality of the station structures, their spatial design integrated with its immediate environment and oriented to people needs are significant points to be considered. The metro station surrounding is a transit point for the transportation needs of many people during the day. This study deals within this area in terms of being used as a public space. The main purpose of this study is to determine the physical and social factors that affect perceptions of people and use of space in the public space in the example of metro station surroundings and to determine how this situation differs depending on the individual characteristics of the users such as age, gender, income, education, working status. The method followed in this context; Evka-3, Konak, Fahrettin Altay (İzmir) includes collecting data through the field observations of perceptions of people and physical characteristics in the public space around the metro station, and the factors affecting user perceptions and space use, through a survey with 300 people. There are many factors such as making you feel safe, aesthetic, attractive, comfortable, and visible among the physical and social factors affecting the use of the station surroundings. Land use and accessibility in the immediate vicinity of the station are other important factors that affect perceptions of people for the physical environment about the use of space. This study proposes urban design interferences to improve user perceptions of the metro station surrounding and increase the use of these areas.Master Thesis Design of Public Open Spaces in Historical Districts: the Case of Urla(01. Public open spaces are important parts of historical districts. Public open spaces in historical districts are places for thinking, learning and social interaction where various social activities take place. They form the identity of the city. Therefore, it is important to preserve and maintain public open spaces in historical districts. The aim of the thesis is to develop principles for public open spaces in historical districts by considering the tangible and intangible traces of the past. This thesis examines how tangible and intangible historic traces of the past should be used in today's design. In this context, the thesis examines the public open space design approaches and principles for historical districts and to determines the public open space design principles through a case study. Within the scope of the thesis, firstly, the characteristics of public open spaces and the challenges faced in historical districts are examined, and design approaches and principles that include tangible and intangible historic traces in historical districts are studied. Secondly, examples across the world that have the tangible and intangible traces of the past in their designs are analyzed. Finally, within the scope of the Case of Urla, the design principles depend on tangible and intangible historic traces are specified for Urla Cumhuriyet Square and its surroundings.Master Thesis Relationship of Street Art and Public Space: Assessing the Short Term Impacts in the Case of Urla(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2020) Kolçak, Emre; Kaya Erol, NursenStreet art is dynamic concept which has continuous changes. Multidimensional structure of street art allows it to be examined in different fields. Studies on street art mostly focus on what street art is and how it differs from other similar art terminologies. Street art can be defined as any informal artistic practices or artworks performed in public spaces. The aim of the thesis is to reveal how street art affects public space as a matter of urban design. In this context, the thesis aims to investigate the factors transforming public spaces into public places and to examine the quality of the spaces before and after the street art performances through a case study. With this aim, since the concept of street art is a continuously changing phenomenon, the definitions, development and examples of street art are firstly examined. Secondly, what public space is, what makes successful place, what public space means for street art and how street art transforms public space into public pace has been examined. Thirdly, the impacts of street art on different types of spaces are examined in the example of Urla, Izmir. Finally, the impacts of street art on different types of spaces are evaluated and how it should be approached from urban design perspective is described.Master Thesis Age-friendly' Neighbourhood Parks: Evaluating Parks in Karşıyaka (izmir) According To User Perceptions(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Imıl, Ahmet Said; Şenol, FatmaNeighbourhood parks are expected to be accessible public open spaces located in a walking distance to the residences of individuals and provide them opportunities for leisure activities, physical activities and socializing. Use of neighbourhood parks is beneficial for all, but especially for older adults, as most of their daily routines are bound to neighbourhood environment. It is observed that older adults using neighbourhood parks often tend to have better physiological, mental and social health. On the other hand, not all older adults use neighbourhood parks, commonly because physical and social characteristics of these parks are not responsive to their age-related spatial needs and expectations. An ‘age-friendly’ park is supposed to be accessible, attractive, comfortable and safe for all, and particularly older adults. Certain factors about parks and park surroundings, for instance, walkability of the streets, opportunities for social interactions or existence of restrooms affect the perceptions of older adults about the age-friendliness of parks. The aim of this study is to identify the socio-spatial characteristics of parks that contribute to their age-friendliness, based on studies about spatial experiences of older adults in public open spaces. Then as a case study based on interviews with 65 years old and older park users in two relatively age-friendly neighbourhood parks in Karşıyaka (Izmir) that are selected through site observations, this study intends to evaluate how age-friendly the older adults perceive these parks, in relation to access to parks, physical and social characteristics of parks and park surroundings. Finally, the study intends to use its findings to develop recommendations for urban design interventions to improve age-friendliness of neighbourhood parks.Master Thesis Critical Review Of City Branding: Case Study Of Hacı Memiş District (alaçatı, Turkey)(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Erdoğan, Cansu; Saygın, NicelThis thesis examines the city branding process with a critical view in the case of Hacı Memiş District in Alaçatı, İzmir. In this context, the study is aimed to criticize city branding approach as an internationally research domain characterized by a multidisciplinary research. Actually, it investigates and analyzes the controversial issues of city branding. The case study of thesis, Alaçatı that has been defined as a recent phenomenon of city branding in Turkey from 2000s, is a historical settlement in İzmir Peninsula. Within the scope of the study, the surveys and in-depth interviews with groups of business owners, locals, visitors and pioneers in Alaçatı provided the study data to reveal the dynamics and direction of the transformation. The study also focuses on the context and background of the settlement, chronological processing of historical developments, social, demographic and economic structure, land uses, plans in different scales, projects and planning decisions, to show implications of city branding on the place and target groups, especially, the locals. The aim of this study is to assess the branding story of Alaçatı in detail for disclosing a spatial, social, economic and quality of life implications on the locals. Research findings indicates that, the branding process of Alaçatı has brought about a radical transformation in Alaçatı. These impacts have caused varied tendencies, particularly, "gentrification" and in parallel with the gentrification in cities, "displacement" tookplace in Alaçatı.Master Thesis Assessing the Walkability Principles: the Case Study of Mehmetçik Boulevard(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Bağcı, Seda; Kaya Erol, NursenWalkability is defined as the action of the human being to go from one place to another. The streets are one of the most important parts of the built environment and their using by pedestrians increases urban consciousness and social ties. The quality of walkability varies according to the location, usage, and character of the public space. Walkability issue has become more important due to urban growth and an increase in vehicle usage in today's' cities. Increasing walkability in a city increases livability. The aim of this thesis is to assess the walkability quality of urban streets considering walkability principles. In this context, the thesis aims to investigate the principles that affect walkability in urban centers and considering walkability principles to examine the built environment characteristics and pedestrians' usage of a street through a case study. The thesis also attempts to offer recommendations for creating more walkable spaces. For these purposes, firstly, the definition and importance of the concept of walkability are examined. Secondly, walkability principles of the streets in urban centers are established. Thirdly, Mehmetçik Boulevard, which is located in one of the sub-centers of İzmir and used intensively during the day, is evaluated according to the walkability principles. In this study, the walkability quality of the boulevard is examined and assessed in the context of diversity, accessibility, safety, street quality, comfort and legibility principles. Finally, as a result of the literature study and the case study, recommendations are provided to increase walkability quality of Mehmetçik Boulevard, and as well as for urban streets of other cities.Master Thesis Children's Active Commuting To Schools in Different Neighbourhoods: Design of Streets as Child Friendy Environments(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Abatay, Gülce; Şenol, FatmaThe study examines the factors that affect the 8-11 years old primary school students' commute to school by using active transportation modes (i.e., walking and bicycling). Active commuting to school is promoted for children as the main opportunity for children’s physical activity for their physical and even mental health. However, in recent years there has been a significant decrease in the number of children who engage in physical activity in many parts of the world including Turkey. As a result of rapid urbanization, decreasing number of open spaces in urban areas and also increasing level of car ownership are seen as the main reasons for children’s passive lifestyles. One of the easiest and most practical ways to adopt physical activity in children's daily life is to enable children to commute to their school by walking or bicycling. On the other hand, although there are increasing number of studies abroad, there is an important literature gap about the factors affecting children’s active commuting to school in Turkey. Besides multiple social factors (such as parents' concerns about the safety of their children) children's perceptions about physical characteristics of the built environment (such as land use and vehicular traffic) are some of the significant factors shaping travel mode of children to school. The aim of this study is to identify the social and physical factors that affect mode choice of children's commuting to their school while examining children's and their parents' experiences and expectations about the built environment. Developing as a study about 8-11 years old primary school students in two schools of two neighbourhoods in Bornova/Izmir, this thesis deploys fields observations and majorly user surveys with these children and their parents about their experiences of commuting to school. Finally, it develops recommendations and strategies for the physical design of the streets for children to use active transportation opportunities.Master Thesis Urban Tomography and Digital Humanities in Visual Tradition of Urban Design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Yılmaz, Almira; Velibeyoğlu, KoraySince the 1960s, the information obtaining methods used in urban design studies in the visual-perceptual dimension have been improved and renewed with the developing technology and internet facilities in the world of the 2000s, however the urban design techniques have lagged behind this. In the studies carried out until the 1990s, only hand drawings, observations, one-to-one interviews and questionnaires were used as a data gathering method, technology and digitalism were not used. Where technology is not used in urban studies, traditional methods requires large data processing as time and effort in large-scale areas therefore data gathering methods has to change. In this study, the theoretical aspects of the methods used in the visual-perceptual tradition are discussed with the examination of especially the works of Kevin Lynch, Donald Appleyard and Gordon Cullen, who use traditional methods. Since social media and digital multimedia tools are frequently used in today's societies, every movement related to the city is available in a digital environment. It is explained that with ‘Digital Humanities’ a digital library approach that has been used in today's technology; we can have a more practical, more up-to-date and developing information network. Taking into consideration the active use of social media in today's world, considering the major trends such as big data analysis, internet of things, visualization tools -photographs, video records- and social media platforms, we can discuss the urban design of the city and its places and we will be able to obtain information about the city from millions of different perspectives. In this study, what urban designer can use the information technology and visualization methods in the accelerating new technological age and what are these methods theoretically adds to the field questions are discussed.Master Thesis Place Attachment in the Urban Design Guides: Case of Buca(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2018) Bayram, Arzu; Velibeyoğlu, KorayThis study investigates physical ties of inhabitants, to Dumlupınar neighbourhood and its surroundings where situated in the district of Buca and has a conservation plan, in the context of urban design guides. While cities has faced with losing their identities in the present times, conservation plans are assets in this sense but only not sufficient enough by themselves. Technical specifications, which constitute a framework for the implementation of conservation plans, are used as a standardized template, without any specific definitions. This situation ignores the identity of each place and the historical processes it undergoes and prevents its ability to carry its values to the future. Urban design guides are the tools that makes more explicit definitions on plans by taking into account the specific development processes of each place. In this sense, urban design guides must be considered as a whole with development plans. This makes sure of cities that have different identities can be more liveable and transferable to the future. As a result, the content of the meaning of places where people grow feelings to, can be evaluated in terms of urban design guides in order to make places liveable.
