    Formation of Architectural History as a Discipline in Modern Architectural Education in Turkey

    Architectural history courses, which examine the architectural works, buildings, and social structure of societies from various civilizations, regions, and ages with multiple viewpoints, are an important part of architectural education. In Turkey, within the scope of the education programs, architectural history courses take place in doctorate, master, and undergraduate programs, and in terms of undergraduate education, they are one of the critical elements of the compulsory courses. Undergraduate architectural education and architectural history courses are taught in 101 of Turkey's 204 universities, but when these courses are examined from a varied perspective, they show differences in the distribution to the semesters, duration, scope and subject content, naming, course sources, or local and national crediting. While this situation causes an architecture student studying architecture in Turkey to graduate with knowledge of architectural history at different scales, it also contradicts the National Qualifications Framework Charter in Turkey. Also, the consequences of this situation appear in many areas with negative examples both in education life and the built environment. In this context, within the scope of this study, architectural history courses in undergraduate architectural education in Turkey are examined through data from the ECTS information package with the purpose of revealing the portfolio of architectural history education. The main objective of this study is to examine the effects of the causes and consequences of these differences on architectural undergraduate education by analyzing the different approaches seen in the scope of Architecture History courses in undergraduate architecture education in Turkey using numerical data.

    Design and Education: a Descriptive Study on Two Exercises of the Introduction To Design Course at Iztech Faculty of Architecture

    Design is a cognitive activity that many parameters involved to the process. Because of the complex structure of design, design education is also difficult to frame. In the period of architectural design education, first year is the special term that students not only challenge with the complexity of design and learning design, they also experience difficulties because of the changed learning habits, education methods and lack of skill and knowledge on design. Therefore, this descriptive study focused on Introductory Design Studios in Architecture Faculty of IZTECH in order to understand how the beginner design students respond to learning design exercises in this challenging period. Under the title of the main research question, the design processes of the students according to the simple and complex assignments were analyzed, their responses were evaluated in accordance with the assignment goals, the results were discussed and compared. In the data gathering process, AR101 Introduction to Design, fall 2016-2017 studio was directly observed in the natural studio environment during the semester. Among the students, a focus group were set up in order to follow their design processes closely and five students were chosen for the case study from the focus group. In addition to the research tools, questionnaires and interviews were conducted with both students and instructors. The results of this study reveal the differences between responses of the beginner design students to the assignments, the changes in the responses according to the simplicity and complexity of the assignments and the influential factors in their design processes and design learning.

    A Model To Interpret Bio-Inspired Design and Its Impact on Design Curricula

    Inspirations from nature is widely used in the field of design. Rising concerns about the irreversible and hazardous effects of humankind, direct the developments in the field of design and technology once again to nature. Biomimicry is a term that connotes the life and imitation of nature and this imitation can be applied also in the context of design as in many areas of life. Nowadays, design has started to use not only the simulation of the shapes of nature but also the structural and systemic features of the nature. In the field of architecture, there is a rising interest towards buildings designed by bio-inspired processes together with the seek for sustainable solutions. Architecture schools which are following the advancements in contemporary built environment and building technologies started to include bio-inspired design courses into their curriculums. Within the scope of this thesis the prominent bio-inspired architectural products are examined in order to; (1) a categorization proposal is developed to read bioinspired design approaches, (2) the impact and the place of bio-inspired design approaches in leading architectural school’s curriculum.
