The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons and the longitudinal polarization of the K*(892)(+) meson are determined as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass. These are the first results from this exclusive decay mode and are in agreement with a standard model prediction.Article Citation - WoS: 27Citation - Scopus: 31Development and Validation of Herwig 7 Tunes From Cms Underlying-Event Measurements(Springer, 2021) Karapınar, GülerThis paper presents new sets of parameters (tunes) for the underlying-event model of the herwig 7 event generator. These parameters control the description of multiple-parton interactions (MPI) and colour reconnection in herwig 7, and are obtained from a fit to minimum-bias data collected by the CMS experiment at v s = 0.9, 7, and 13 TeV. The tunes are based on the NNPDF3.1 next-to-nextto-leading-order parton distribution function (PDF) set for the parton shower, and either a leading-order or next-to-nextto-leading-order PDF set for the simulation of MPI and the beam remnants. Predictions utilizing the tunes are produced for event shape observables in electron-positron collisions, and forminimum-bias, inclusive jet, top quark pair, and Zand Wboson events in proton-proton collisions, and are compared with data. Each of the new tunes describes the data at a reasonable level, and the tunes using a leading-order PDF for the simulation of MPI provide the best description of the data.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 15Constraints on the Initial State of Pb-Pb Collisions Via Measurements of Z-Boson Yields and Azimuthal Anisotropy at Root S(nn)=5.02 Tev(Amer Physical Soc, 2021) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationThe CMS experiment at the LHC has measured the differential cross sections of Z bosons decaying to pairs of leptons, as functions of transverse momentum and rapidity, in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measured Z boson elliptic azimuthal anisotropy coefficient is compatible with zero, showing that Z bosons do not experience significant final-state interactions in the medium produced in the collision. Yields of Z bosons are compared to Glauber model predictions and are found to deviate from these expectations in peripheral collisions, indicating the presence of initial collision geometry and centrality selection effects. The precision of the measurement allows, for the first time, for a data-driven determination of the nucleon-nucleon integrated luminosity as a function of lead-lead centrality, thereby eliminating the need for its estimation based on a Glauber model.Article Multiparticle Correlations and Higher Order Harmonics in Ppb Collisions at Root S(nn)=8.16 Tev(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationThe elliptic and higher-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics (v(n)) are obtained for pPb collisions at root s(NN) = 8.16 TeV over a wide range of event multiplicities based on multiparticle correlations. The data were collected by the CMS experiment during the 2016 LHC run. A sample of peripheral PbPb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV covering a similar range of event multiplicities to the pPb results is also analyzed for comparison. The ratios of different harmonic moments are obtained for both v(2) and v(3) with high precision, which allows a direct comparison to theoretical predictions assuming a hydrodynamic evolution of the created medium with initial-state density fluctuations, particularly probing the non-Gaussian nature of initial-state fluctuations in small collision systems. The presented results provide crucial insights into the origin of collective long-range correlations observed in small collision systems.Article Citation - WoS: 52Citation - Scopus: 56Study of Jet Quenching With Isolated-Photon+jet Correlations in Pbpb and Pp Collisions at Snn=5.02 Tev(Elsevier Ltd., 2018) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, GülerMeasurements of azimuthal angle and transverse momentum (pT) correlations of isolated photons and associated jets are reported for pp and PbPb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. For events containing a leading isolated photon with pT γ>40 GeV/c and an associated jet with pT jet>30 GeV/c, the photon+jet azimuthal correlation and pT imbalance in PbPb collisions are studied as functions of collision centrality and pT γ. The results are compared to pp reference data collected at the same collision energy and to predictions from several theoretical models for parton energy loss. No evidence of broadening of the photon+jet azimuthal correlations is observed, while the ratio pT jet/pT γ decreases significantly for PbPb data relative to the pp reference. All models considered agree within uncertainties with the data. The number of associated jets per photon with pT γ>80 GeV/c is observed to be shifted towards lower pT jet values in central PbPb collisions compared to pp collisions.Article Citation - WoS: 33Citation - Scopus: 75Search for an Exotic Decay of the Higgs Boson To a Pair of Light Pseudoscalars in the Final State With Two B Quarks and Two Τ Leptons in Proton–proton Collisions at S=13tev(Elsevier B.V., 2018) Sirunyan,A.M.; Tumasyan,A.; Adam,W.; Ambrogi,F.; Asilar,E.; Bergauer,T.; Adzic,P.A search for an exotic decay of the Higgs boson to a pair of light pseudoscalar bosons is performed for the first time in the final state with two b quarks and two τ leptons. The search is motivated in the context of models of physics beyond the standard model (SM), such as two Higgs doublet models extended with a complex scalar singlet (2HDM + S), which include the next-to-minimal supersymmetric SM (NMSSM). The results are based on a data set of proton–proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1, accumulated by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. Masses of the pseudoscalar boson between 15 and 60GeV are probed, and no excess of events above the SM expectation is observed. Upper limits between 3 and 12% are set on the branching fraction B(h→aa→2τ2b) assuming the SM production of the Higgs boson. Upper limits are also set on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to two light pseudoscalar bosons in different 2HDM + S scenarios. The data used in this work were collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Fourier coefficients as functions of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are studied using the scalar product method; four-, six-, and eight-particle cumulants; and the Lee-Yang zero technique. The sample of proton-proton collision data, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The signal is observed with a significance in excess of 5 standard deviations. After subtraction of the ψ(2S)→J/ψX contribution, the ratio of the branching fraction of the exclusive decay Z→J/ψ + - to the decay Z→μ+μ-μ+μ- within a fiducial phase space is measured to be B(Z→J/ψ + -)/B(Z→μ+μ-μ+μ-)=0.67±0.18(stat)±0.05(syst).Article Citation - WoS: 187Citation - Scopus: 313Observation of Higgs Boson Decay To Bottom Quarks(American Physical Society, 2018) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, GülerThe observation of the standard model (SM) Higgs boson decay to a pair of bottom quarks is presented. The main contribution to this result is from processes in which Higgs bosons are produced in association with a W or Z boson (VH), and are searched for in final states including 0, 1, or 2 charged leptons and two identified bottom quark jets. The results from the measurement of these processes in a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment in 2017, comprising 41.3 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, are described. When combined with previous VH measurements using data collected at s=7, 8, and 13 TeV, an excess of events is observed at mH=125 GeV with a significance of 4.8 standard deviations, where the expectation for the SM Higgs boson is 4.9. The corresponding measured signal strength is 1.01±0.22. The combination of this result with searches by the CMS experiment for H→bb in other production processes yields an observed (expected) significance of 5.6 (5.5) standard deviations and a signal strength of 1.04±0.20.Article Citation - WoS: 102Citation - Scopus: 153Search for Additional Neutral Mssm Higgs Bosons in the ? ? Final State in Proton-Proton Collisions at ?s=13 Tev(Springer Verlag, 2018) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, GülerA search is presented for additional neutral Higgs bosons in the τ τ final state in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The search is performed in the context of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM), using the data collected with the CMS detector in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes production of the Higgs boson in association with b quarks. No significant deviation above the expected background is observed. Model-independent limits at 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the product of the branching fraction for the decay into τ leptons and the cross section for the production via gluon fusion or in association with b quarks. These limits range from 18 pb at 90 GeV to 3.5 fb at 3.2 TeV for gluon fusion and from 15 pb (at 90 GeV) to 2.5 fb (at 3.2 TeV) for production in association with b quarks, assuming a narrow width resonance. In the mh hod + scenario these limits translate into a 95% CL exclusion of tan β > 6 for neutral Higgs boson masses below 250 GeV, where tan β is the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the neutral components of the two Higgs doublets. The 95% CL exclusion contour reaches 1.6 TeV for tan β = 60.
