    Designing a Driver Environment for Rigid Inflatable Boats Using a User-Centred Design Approach

    Herein, the importance of design methods for a company’s competence in the commercial world and the importance of integrating design into the product development process in the initial stages are discussed. Notably, driver environments on current boats are not ergonomically designed. Hence, this study aimed at designing a new driver environment with improved ergonomics and user experience that is aesthetically compelling to the market. This study is based on a user-centred design approach, which implies that all team members participate throughout the product development process to create design value for users by crafting innovative solutions that satisfy their requirements. Consequently, a new console, seating unit, and hardtop design that consider the importance of ergonomics, user experience, and manufacturability are developed. These elements are not only integrated in a user-friendly manner but also provide improved maintainability and productibility. © 2022: The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

    The Impact of Visual Thinking in Medical Education

    Background Considering medical humanities, medicine and art are two areas that resemble each other at several features. Clinical diagnosis involves the observation, description and interpretation of information of which visual ones take an important one. The skills described are important skills in the field of visual arts, as well. Underlying a good clinical practice; clinical examination and observation skills constitute an important place. Although in several studies, these skills are shown to be improved by analyzing visual art pieces, courses intended to improve visual thinking skills are not that much common in medical faculty curriculums. Materials and methods In this article, we share our opinion about the use of visual thinking in medical education by providing preliminary reflection results of learners from the second year of medical education about the visual thinking course that we have recently started to apply in Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with Faculty of Fine Arts in Izmir University of Economics in order to improve the observational skills of learners. Results Reflection results of the learners support the view that training art-viewing skill is helpful to improve observational and descriptive skills. Conclusions Increasing interdisciplinary programs on visual thinking in medical curriculums have the potential to overcome several professional development challenges in clinics.

    Symbolic Creativity in Play Activity: a Critique on Playthings From Daily Life Objects To Toys

    Play is an essential activity for children’s development. Children play with daily life objects as well as toys. Daily life with its various objects and practices provides a real freedom for discovery and self-realization. Children celebrate this value through symbolic creativity that flourishes in various play practices, such as symbolic object use, storytelling, animation in special modes of virtualization and actualization, construction with everyday mathematics and puzzling for order in chaos. The study examines a girl’s play activities with daily life things and waste materials between 6 and 8 years of ages. Finally, the study emphasizes that: (1) symbolic creativity is necessary for children’s self-realization and accordingly for their well-being and (2) toys must be selected carefully to stimulate children’s ability to imagine, create and produce.
