Article Design Discourse in Discount Shopping Context: Textual Analysis With Critical Studies Perspective and Deconstructionist Theory(Intellect Ltd., 2024) Talu, NilüferIn consumption culture, individuals need things to update their selves or to repre-sent their identities. The more they update their belongings, the more they feel unsatisfied. In this cultural recycling, everyday objects become objects of desire, while the notion of design functions to create attraction. The problem originates in the disengagement of subjects–objects in which the capitalist economic system gets benefits sustaining the cycle of mass production-consumption. To get more benefit, this cycle is sped up along with discount shopping context. The study aims to produce a design discourse in discount shopping context in relevance of the issues of individuality and ethics. The method is a textual analysis with critical studies perspective and deconstructionist approach. The texts are the questionnaire transcripts written by fifteen women. Critical studies perspective clarifies power relations between capitalist economic system and consumer; and deconstructivist approach determines binary relations in relevance of individuality, and ethics and heterogeneity of the texts concerning to design. Along with these two approaches, textual analysis creates a discursive structure. The structure is used to generate a design discourse in which the meaning of design is situated. In this structure, design would be something in a specific heterogeneity and relations around the matters of individuality and ethics. The discursive structure is of importance that summarizes the method used and determines all coherencies around the definitions of design. This structure also could be a useful source for the production of other critical discourses on the relations of subjects–objects and the position of design in consumption culture. © 2023 Intellect Ltd Article.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1A Narrative of an Ideological Destruction: Where Do We Go Now?(University of Pittsburgh, 2023) Tunç Cox, Ayça; Aygün, GamzenurLebanese filmmaker, actress, and screenwriter Nadine Labaki’s 2011 film Where Do We Go Now? is about the ideological manipulation that gradually results in a big conflict among people in a rural Middle Eastern village where Muslims and Christians live in a peaceful existence. Labaki is known for her politically engaged narratives which refer to the recent political past of Lebanese whilst centralizing strong female figures. Where Do We Go Now? is no exception, and thus, reflects the director's general cinematic style and political attitude. Labaki invites her audience through the comedy to question ideology which interpellates and thus constructs the individual as a subject by revealing the ways ideology creates differences, separation, and conflict among people. In this context, this article strives to analyze the film Where Do We Go Now? employing critical discourse analysis with references to Althusser's conceptualization of ideology and Subject-subject formation. © 2023, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh. Due to the disease and treatment, children experience suffering, pain, interruption in school and playful activities, and separation from social and familiar environments. These negatively affect their quality of life (QOL). This article reports a co-design process conducted with children with cancer to shed light on their needs with regard to the play area furniture at the hospital to recommend design ideas that might improve children's QOL. The results have shown that a modular furniture system that can be customizable by children might contribute to their QOL - thanks to its adaptability to the needs of a wide range of age groups. In addition, there is a possible link between co-design sessions and children's well-being in terms of an increased sense of control, socialization and physical activities. For designers- who are the facilitators of co-design sessions with children- actively involving caregivers in co-design processes, co-designing the generative tools and the process with participants, and conducting observations and interviews to shape and complement the co-design sessions are advised. The findings of this study are expected to assist designers, co-design practitioners and healthcare members.Article Designing a Driver Environment for Rigid Inflatable Boats Using a User-Centred Design Approach(University of Buckingham Press, 2022) Erkarslan, Özlem; Aşıcı, BurçinHerein, the importance of design methods for a company’s competence in the commercial world and the importance of integrating design into the product development process in the initial stages are discussed. Notably, driver environments on current boats are not ergonomically designed. Hence, this study aimed at designing a new driver environment with improved ergonomics and user experience that is aesthetically compelling to the market. This study is based on a user-centred design approach, which implies that all team members participate throughout the product development process to create design value for users by crafting innovative solutions that satisfy their requirements. Consequently, a new console, seating unit, and hardtop design that consider the importance of ergonomics, user experience, and manufacturability are developed. These elements are not only integrated in a user-friendly manner but also provide improved maintainability and productibility. © 2022: The Royal Institution of Naval Architects.Article A Cluster of Surprise Egg Toys as Designed Objects at the Intersection of Design and Culture(Common Ground Research Networks, 2022) Talu, NilüferThis study examines the cultural context of a cluster of surprise egg toys. The cluster contains 167 toys, collected between the years 1993 and 2015. The study methodology consisted of content analysis involving both qualitative interpretation and quantitative techniques. The interpretation is initiated with the toys’ physical materiality. Analysis is then developed on the compositional modalities of each toy, the place of each in the cluster, and the cluster as a whole. Qualitative interpretation and theoretical analysis of detailed descriptions and groupings of the cluster highlight the central themes found at the intersection of design and culture. Analysis of the cluster reveals that it carries the duality, or the tension, between modern and postmodern cultures with one elevating functionality and the other using storytelling as a means of creativity. Clinical diagnosis involves the observation, description and interpretation of information of which visual ones take an important one. The skills described are important skills in the field of visual arts, as well. Underlying a good clinical practice; clinical examination and observation skills constitute an important place. Although in several studies, these skills are shown to be improved by analyzing visual art pieces, courses intended to improve visual thinking skills are not that much common in medical faculty curriculums. Materials and methods In this article, we share our opinion about the use of visual thinking in medical education by providing preliminary reflection results of learners from the second year of medical education about the visual thinking course that we have recently started to apply in Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with Faculty of Fine Arts in Izmir University of Economics in order to improve the observational skills of learners. Results Reflection results of the learners support the view that training art-viewing skill is helpful to improve observational and descriptive skills. Endüstri Ürünleri Tasarımı (EÜT) ve Endüstriyel Tasarım (ET) eğitimi veren kurumlar, mezunlarının sektöre yaptığı katkılarının yanında, piyasayı geliştirmek amacıyla kendilerini de sürekli gözden geçirmek, eksikliklerini gidermek; sanayinin beklentilerine cevap vermek durumundadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’deki Endüstri Ürünleri Tasarımı ve Endüstriyel Tasarım mezunlarının istihdamında sanayinin, endüstriyel tasarımcı kimliğini nasıl algıladığını, iş tanımları üstünden tespit edilmesini kapsar. Bu çalışma üç safhada yürütülmüştür: öncelikle derinlemesine bir literatür araştırmasının ardından, Türkiye’de Endüstri Ürünleri Tasarımı ve Endüstriyel Tasarım lisans eğitimi veren on üniversitenin mevcut ders programları ve içerikleri incelenmiş, Türkiye’deki yedi web portalındaki 2009 yılı son dört ayı içerisinde yayınlanmış iş ilanları taranıp incelenerek, sanayinin gözündeki endüstriyel tasarımcısının profili çıkarılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın sonucu, hem tasarım eğitimi ve mesleği hem de mezunların istihdamında endüstrinin talepleri ve beklentilerinin tatmini açısından önemlidir.Article A Re-Design Project: Correction of an Outdoor Fitness Equipment’s Design According To Its Users’s Anthropometric and Biomechanical Data(2018) Kaya, Nazife Aslı; Erkarslan, ÖnderThe aim of this study is to determine the anthropometric measurements of the users of outdoor fitness equipment and to re-design of an in-use outdoor fitness equipment according to these measurements. A total of 100 (50 male and 50 female) outdoor fitness equipment users, living in Eskisehir, Turkey, voluntarily participated in the study. Their ages ranged from 18 to 79 years and the mean of their ages were 31,2 (SD: 1,15277). The following human body dimensions were measured: stature, shoulder height, side-arm reach, fist (knuckle) height, forearm length, upper arm length, shoulder-fingertip length, knee height, malleolus height and hand length. The anthropometric measures of the adults and the outdoor fitness equipment’ dimensions were compared in order to identify any incompatibility between them. The data indicated a mismatch between the adults’ bodily dimensions and the outdoor fitness equipment available to them. Later on, in use fitness equipment’s motion output compared with biomechanical limits. Also, a mismatch was found between the motion output and biomechanical limits which might cause injuries. As these mismatches endanger public health, an outdoor fitness equipment, FE02 Stepper was re-designed according to its users’ anthropometric data and biomechanical limits as an example.
