To this end, implementation of an accurate model relying on effective parameters involved is a reliable benchmark. In this study, three machine learning techniques, namely extreme learning machine (ELM), multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN), and M5P model tree (M5PMT); and three optimization approaches of Runge Kutta (RUN), genetic algorithm (GA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are applied for modeling. The optimization and ensemble hybridization approaches are applied in the modeling procedure. For the case of hybrid optimized models, the ELM and MLPNN models are hybridized with RUN, GA, and PSO algorithms to develop six hybrid models of ELM-RUN, ELM-GA, ELM-PSO, MLPNN-RUN, MLPNN-GA, and MLPNN-PSO. Ensemble hybrid models are developed through coupling the ELM and MLPNN models with the M5PMT algorithm. The data pre-processing approach is applied to find the best randomness characteristic of the utilized data. Results illustrate that the RUN-based hybrid models outperform the GA- and PSO-based counterparts. Although the MLPNN-RUN and MLPNN-M5PMT hybrid models generate better results than their alternatives, MLPNN-M5PMT slightly outperforms MLPNN-RUN model with a coefficient of determination of 0.84 and a root mean square error of 0.88. The current study shows the superiority of the ensemble-based approach to the optimization techniques. In this study, polyamide 66 (PA66) nanofibers produced by electrospinning were coated on unidirectional carbon/epoxy prepregs to increase the bond strength of the composites. Carbon/epoxy prepregs with/without PA66 nanofiber coating on the bonding region were fabricated using the autoclave, which is often used in the aerospace industry. The single lap shear Charpy impact energy and Mode-I fracture toughness tests were employed to examine the effects of PA66 nanofibers on the mechanical properties of the joint region. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the nanofiber morphology and fracture modes. The thermal characteristics of Polyamide 66 nanofibers were explored by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We observed that the electrospun PA66 nanofiber coating on the prepreg surfaces substantially improves the joint strength. Results revealed that the single lap shear and Charpy impact strength values of the composite joint are increased by about 79 and 24%, respectively, by coating PA66 nanofibers onto the joining region. The results also showed that by coating PA66 nanofibers, the Mode-I fracture toughness value was improved by about 107% while the glass transition temperature remained constant.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Valuing Groundwater Heritage: the Historic Wells of Kadıovacık(Springer, 2021) Yüceer, Hülya; Baba, Alper; Özcan Gönülal, Yasemin; Uştuk, Ozan; Gerçek, Deniz; Güler, Selen; Uzelli, TaygunThe consideration of the subject of water resources, seen as a part of cultural heritage, generally includes water-related architectural structures such as bridges, aqueducts, and cisterns. Groundwater resources and related structures, however, receive little attention as heritage assets, and they are mostly forgotten together with the valuable information they hold. In this sense, this study aims to provide an accurate assessment of groundwater heritage and to suggest proposals for conservation through the case of the historic wells of Kadıovacık village in the Urla district of İzmir. Although the region where the village is located is rich in groundwater resources, the residents have suffered from drought for ages due to the specific geological characteristics of the Kadıovacık polje. The limited amount of water resources in Kadıovacık village have karstic characteristics and have shaped the life and topography of the region. To access and harvest this limited groundwater, a group of wells had been constructed on the ridge of the hill. These wells have been idle since 1980s with the supply of city main water. In line with the aim, a comprehensive heritage valuation by an interdisciplinary group of experts is essential to reveal the significance of the relatively humble wells. Accordingly, a multi-method system is used, including historical, social, cultural, architectural, geological, hydrogeological, and environmental aspects. The results show that although the wells are generally considered to be less important as heritage assets in terms of their physical features, an in-depth evaluation demonstrates their high significance for the village community.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Empirical, Numerical, and Soft Modelling Approaches for Non-Cohesive Sediment Transport(Springer, 2021) Tayfur, GökmenThis paper reviews the modelling approaches and outstanding issues with regard to non-cohesive sediment transport which has been experimentally and numerically studied for many decades owing to its importance to hydraulic structures, morphology and related areas. About 311 papers are reviewed that included laboratory experiments, field observations, and analytical and numerical modelling studies. The reviewed papers cover the period 1938-2020. Of 311, 95 papers are included in this paper. The modeling approaches include empirical, physics-based, spatially averaged, and soft methods. The empirical models have oversimplified the process while the physics-based models are indispensable when the detailed analysis is required. On the other hand, when the objective is to obtain cumulative sediment loads, it would be advantageous to employ the spatial averaging modelling and/or the soft computing methods due to less computational burden and data requirements. The outstanding issues are related to the particle fall velocity, particle velocity, incipient motion, and transport function that require further experimental investigations especially for unsteady non-uniform transport processes.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Consolidation of a Bath Ruin in an Archaeological Site(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2022) Durmuşlar, Feyza; Turan, Mine; Yücetürk, Kutay; Aktaş, EnginThe study has focused on consolidation of a historical bath ruin in an archaeological site. Cevher Pasa Bath, which is located in Tabae archaeological site in Denizli, Turkey and dated to the 15th century, presents structural problems. The aim of the study is to propose a framework for planning consolidation of the ruins of Cevher Pasa Bath so that conservation work regarding similar masonry ruins in archaeological sites can be guided. Thus, methods of architectural restoration and civil engineering are combined in an interdisciplinary scope. Provision of temporary shoring as an emergency intervention, consolidation and presentation of the ruin within the scope of an interdisciplinary restoration project, and monitoring of the asset within the frame of a monument management plan are suggested, respectively. Structural analysis considering stress and overturning moment checks are performed. Consolidation work includes only supporting of arch remains. Some walls of the ruin are weaker than other parts. These parts need further detailed analysis, and if necessary, further consolidation and strengthening are to be carried out. The monument management plan points out the necessity of collaboration of local and central administrations, and also non-governmental organisations.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 5A Study on Mitigation of Interstory Drift Concentrations in Reinforced Concrete Frames Under Earthquake Demands(Patron Editore S R L, 2020) Sönmez, Egemen; Dönmez, CemalettinSite observations and analytical studies show that low-rise RC frames have larger interstory drift ratios at the lower stories under earthquake loading. It is obvious that due to the localization of drifts, these structures could reach their capacity limits earlier than a system with a well-distributed drift among its stories. This phenomenon is especially vital for frames with limited drift capacity and could cause them to fail below the specified design demands. The existing stock of seismically deficient RC frames in Turkey, and for that matter all over the world, are in this group. The presented study investigates the effects of a pre-organized stiffness distribution along the building height to mitigate the interstory drift concentrations. As a case study, the readily available infill walls were used for stiffness-modifying elements to obtain the organized stiffness distribution. Initially, the numerical model was calibrated and verified using the experimental results. Afterward, three planar frames were studied. These were a bare frame and two frames with infill walls. Nonlinear dynamic time-history and pushover analyses were performed to evaluate the seismic performance of the frames. The results indicate that the organized stiffness distribution could mitigate the interstory drift concentrations and provide a better distribution of interstory drift ratios along the height of the frames.Article Citation - WoS: 29Citation - Scopus: 32Plate Loading Tests on Clay With Construction and Demolition Materials(Springer Verlag, 2021) Cabalar, Ali Fırat; Abdulnafaa, Mohammed Dafer; İşbuğa, VolkanThis study presents a series results of plate loading tests on a clay with various construction and demolition (CD) materials conducted in a large-scale model box and a numerical verification on the use of these material mixtures. The tests have been applied to the clay with three different types of CD materials (concrete, asphalt, and brick) prepared in a reinforced concrete circular box with a diameter of 2.0 m and a depth of 1.5 m. The CD materials were added to the clay with a mix ratio of 10% by dry weight and then compacted at optimum water content (w(opt)) and corresponding maximum dry density (gamma(drymax)). The testing results have indicated that the CD materials increased the ultimate bearing capacity of the clay with a range of 50-75%. Furthermore, a remarkable correlation between the results of plate loading tests and numerical simulations made by a commercial finite element software (Plaxis 2D) was observed for all mixtures tested.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Dynamic Behavior Predictions of Fiber-Metal Laminate/Aluminum Foam Sandwiches Under Various Explosive Weights(SAGE Publications, 2016) Baştürk, Suat Bahar; Tanoğlu, Metin; Çankaya, Mehmet Alper; Eğilmez, Oğuz ÖzgürApplication of blast tests causes some problems to characterize the performance of panels due to the drastic conditions of explosive medium. Real test has high safety concerns and is not easily accessible because of its extra budget. Some approaches are needed for the preliminary predictions of dynamic characteristics of panels under blast loading conditions. In this study, the response of sandwiches under blast effect was evaluated by combining quasi-static experiments and computational blast test data. The primary aim is to relate the quasi-static panel analysis to dynamic blast load. Based on this idea, lightweight sandwich composites were subjected to quasi-static compression loading with a special test apparatus and the samples were assumed as single degree-of-freedom mass-spring systems to include dynamic effect. This approach provides a simpler way to simulate the blast loading over the surface of the panels and reveals the possible failure mechanisms without applying any explosives. Therefore the design of the panels can be revised by considering quasi-static test results. In this work, the peak deflections and survivabilities of sandwiches for various explosive weights were predicted based on the formulations reported in the literature. Several parameters can affect the properties of gypsum pastes. To study the strength of the gypsum pastes experimentally by trying all these parameters is time-consuming and costly. Therefore, artificial intelligence methods can be very useful to predict the paste strength, which, in turn, can reduce the number of trial batches. Based on experimental data, the generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and empirical models were developed to predict strength of gypsum pastes containing fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS). Gypsum content, pozzolan content, curing temperature, curing duration, and testing age constituted the input variables of the models while the paste strength was the target output. The trained and tested GRNN model was found to be successful in predicting strength. Sensitivity analysis by the GRNN model revealed that the curing duration and temperature were important sensitive parameters. In addition to the GRNN model, empirical models were proposed for the strength prediction. The same input variables formed the input vectors of the empirical models. The same dataset used for the calibration of the GRNN model was employed to establish the empirical models by employing genetic algorithm (GA) method. The empirical models were successfully validated. The GRNN and GA_based empirical models were also tested against the multi-linear regression (MLR) and multi-nonlinear regression (MNLR) models. The results showed the outperformance of the GRNN and the GA_based empirical models over the others.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 13Effect of Soil-Type and Fines Content on Liquefaction Resistance—shear-Wave Velocity Correlation(Taylor & Francis, 2020) Ecemiş, NurhanDirect measurement of shear-wave velocity, Vs, in the field to evaluate the liquefaction resistance of soils is an alternative or complement approach to penetration-based methods. However, the existing liquefaction assessment methods established on the Vs have uncertainties about how the fines content and soil-type change the relationship between Vs and liquefaction resistance. The first part of this paper discusses the existence of fines on the correlation between cone penetration resistance and Vs. The second part focuses on the liquefaction resistance that is construed over again using the simplified cone penetration test (CPT)-based liquefaction screening procedure in terms of Vs for three distinct ranges of non-/low plastic fines content <35% fines. The outcomes of the investigation indicate that for each fines content, the correlation between CRR and Vs1 is not unique; there is a significant scattering of the curves for different soil types. Finally, using the results of this investigation as well as the simplified CPT-based liquefaction screening method, a soil-type specific CRR–Vs1 relationship developed for the unbounded, very young (Holocene-age) soils. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
