Conference Object A Boundary Element Method for Axisymmetric Elastodynamic Analysis(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 1996) Özkan, Gonca; Mengi, YalçınA new numerical method is proposed for the boundary element analysis of axisymmetric bodies. The method is based on complex Fourier series expansion of boundary quantities in circumferential direction, which reduced the boundary element equation to an integral equation in (r-z) plane involving the Fourier coefficients of boundary quantities, where r and z are the coordinates of the r theta z cylindrical coordinate system. The kernels appearing in these integral equations can be computed effectively by discrete Fourier transform formulas together with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, and the integral equations (r-z) plane can be solved by Gaussian quadrature, which establishes the Fourier coefficients associated with boundary quantities. The Fourier transform solution can then be inverted into r theta z space by using again discrete Fourier transform formulas together with FFT algorithm. In this paper, we present the formulation of the proposed method which is outlined above. A comparison is given between the existent methods in literature and our method, which shows that the use of FFT algorithm for the integrations in circumferential direction provides considerable saving in computer time.Conference Object Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activities of Some Turkish Plant Extracts(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2006) Altıok, Evren; Asbagh, L. This work presents the first report on the effect of the zeolite as a filler on the water sorption properties of PP composites. Water swelling experiments were conducted at 25°C using pure PP and PP-zeolite film samples having different zeolite loadings (6-40 wt%). Since PP is a hydrophobic polymer, it does not sorp any water, but the composites having 10, 20, 30, and 40% zeolite sorbed 0.63, 1.00, 1.72 and 3.74 wt% water, respectively. The zeolite itself at the same conditions sorbed 24.5 wt% water. As the filler loading in the composites increased, equilibrium uptake values increased too. On the other hand, water vapor sorption and kinetics has been studied using a Cahn 2000 gravimetric sorption system. Within in the range 0.35-0.95%, water vapor was adsorbed by the composites containing 10-40 wt% zeolite. Experimental effective water vapor diffusivities of the composite films were about one order of magnitude higher than the experimental water diffusion coefficient in composites. The transport of water in composites was slower than that in the liquid water due to the longer diffusion pathway and adsorption on the surface of the composites. Although the liquid water may fill all the voids in the composite, water vapor is adsorbed on the surface of the zeolite only.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 8Phase Equilibrium and Diffusion of Solvents in Polybutadiene: a Capillary-Column Inverse Gas Chromatography Study(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2002) Cai, W. D.; Ramesh, N.; Tıhmınlıoğlu, Funda; Danner, Ronald P.; Duda, John Larry; De Haan, A.The capillary-column inverse gas chromatography method was used to measure the diffusion and partition coefficients of ethylbenzene, styrene, and acrylonitrile in polybutadiene (PBD) at infinite dilution of the solvents. Experiments were performed over a temperature range of 50-125°C. At temperatures well above the glass-transition temperature of PBD, the diffusivities were correlated using an Arrhenius expression. The Arrhenius parameters in turn were intercorrelated and shown to be a function of the occupied volume, thus providing a method for predicting the diffusion of other solvents in the same polymer. Further, the activation energy was predicted using the Duda-Vrentas free-volume approach. The activation energy thus obtained was compared with the activation energy of the Arrhenius approach. A.; Baran, Yusuf; Uslu, R.Docetaxel, a semi-synthetic taxane analogue, is used effectively in the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. Zoledronic acid, the most potent member of bisphosphonates, has shown pleiotropic anti-tumoral effects on prostate cancer cells. We have explored the possible additive/synergistic effects and the apoptotic pathways induced by combination treatment of docetaxel and zoledronic acid in hormone and drug refractory, PC-3 and DU-145 prostate cancer cells. Combination of docetaxel and zoledronic acid synergistically inhibits cell growth in PC-3 and DU-145 cells. Moreover, this effect was due to downregulation of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 in PC-3 and DU-145 cells. In conclusion, docetaxel/zoledronic acid combination is potentially a novel and effective approach for the treatment of prostate cancer.Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 29Physical Properties of Biopolymers Containing Natamycin and Rosemary Extract(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2009) Türe, Hasan; Özen, Fatma Banu; Eroğlu, Erdal; Soyer, Ferda; Özen, Banu; Soyer, FerdaAntifungal biopolymers were prepared by incorporating natamycin (NA) and NA + rosemary extract (RE) into wheat gluten (WG) and methyl cellulose (MC) films. Interaction between antimicrobial agents and biopolymers was determined with mid-infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Water vapour permeability and mechanical properties of these films were also measured. Mid-infrared spectroscopy did not indicate any interaction. SEM observations showed that NA crystallises at high concentrations in biopolymers. There were no significant changes in water vapour permeabilities of biopolymers containing active agents at P < 0.05. While NA incorporation did not result in any changes in mechanical properties of WG films a reduction in tensile strength was observed for MC films containing high concentration of NA. In general, active agent incorporation into WG and MC films did not result in any considerable changes in their physical properties that could affect their application.Article Citation - WoS: 36Citation - Scopus: 38Antimicrobial Activity of Lactoperoxidase System Incorporated Into Cross-Linked Alginate Films(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2009) Yener, Fatih Yalçın Güneş; Korel, Figen; Yemenicioğlu, AhmetIn this study, the antimicrobial effect of lactoperoxidase (LPS) incorporated alginate films was investigated on Escherichia coli (NRRL B-3008), Listeria innocua (NRRL B-33314), and Pseudomonas fluorescens (NRRL B-253) in presence of different concentrations of H2O2 (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mM) and KSCN (1, 2, and 4 mM). The incorporation of 70 nmol ABTS/min/cm2 LPS into alginate films gave 0.66 to 0.85 nmol ABTS/min/cm2 enzyme activity at 0.2 to 0.8 mM H2O 2 concentration range. The antimicrobial activity of LPS system on target bacteria changed according to the concentrations of KSCN and H 2O2. The growth of all tested bacteria was prevented for a 6-h period by applying LPS system in presence of 0.4 or 0.8 mM H 2O2 and 4 mM KSCN. At 0.8 mM H2O2 and 4 mM KSCN, the LPS system also inhibited growth of L. innocua and P. fluorescens for a 24-h incubation period, whereas E. coli growth could not be inhibited for 24 h under these conditions. At 0.2 mM H2O2 and 1 to 4 mM KSCN, a considerable inhibitory effect was obtained only on P. fluorescens. The decreasing order of the resistance of studied bacteria to LPS system is as follows: E. coli, L. innocua, and P. fluorescens. The developed antimicrobial system has a good potential for use in meat, poultry, and seafood since alginate coatings are already used in these products. For this purpose, various analytical techniques, including Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, and Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) were conducted. The resin suspensions with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared via 3-roll milling technique. DSC measurements showed that resin suspensions containing CNTs exhibited higher heat of cure (Q), besides lower activation energy (Ea) when compared with neat resin. For the sake of simplicity of interpretation, FTIR investigations were performed on neat vinyl ester resin suspensions containing the same amount of CNTs as resin. As a result, the individual fractional conversion rates of styrene and vinyl ester were interestingly found to be altered dependent on MWCNTs and MWCNT-NH2. The findings obtained from RS measurements of the cured samples are highly proportional to those obtained from FTIR measurements. TGA measurements revealed that CNT modified nanocomposites have higher activation energy of degradation (Ed) compared with the cured polymer. The findings obtained revealed that CNTs with and without amine functional groups alter overall thermal curing response of the surrounding matrix resin, which may probably impart distinctive characteristics to mechanical behavior of the corresponding nanocomposites achieved.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Colloid Deposition Experiments as a Diagnostic Tool for Biomass Attachment Onto Bioproduct Adsorbent Surfaces(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2008) Tarı, Canan; Vennapusa, Rami Reddy; Cabrera, Rosa B.; Fernandez-Lahore, MarceloBackground: Detrimental processing conditions can be expected in any downstream operation where direct contacting between a crude feedstock and a reactive solid phase is supposed to occur. In this paper we have investigated the factors influencing intact yeast cells deposition onto anion and cation exchangers currently utilized for expanded-bed adsorption of biotechnological products. The aim of this study was twofold: (a)to confirm previous findings relating biomass deposition with surface energetics according to the extended Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey and Overbeek theory (XDLVO) theory; and (b) to provide a simple experimental tool to evaluate biomass deposition onto process surfaces. Results: Biomass deposition experiments were performed on an automated workstation utilizing a packedbed format. Two commercial ion exchangers intended for the direct capture of bioproducts in the presence of suspended biological particles were employed. Intact yeast cells in the late exponential phase of growth were selected as model bio-colloids. Cell deposition was systematically evaluated as a function of fluid-phase conductivity and quantitatively expressed as a biomass deposition parameter (α). Conclusion: α ≤ 0.15 was established as a criterion to reflect negligible biomass adhesion to the process support(s). Biomass deposition experiments further confirmed predictions made on the basis of free interfacial energy calculations as per the extended DLVO approach.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 14Isolation and Characterization of Bacillus Thuringiensis Strains From Olive-Related Habitats in Turkey(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2008) Çınar, Çelenk; Apaydın, Özgür; Yenidünya, Ali Fazıl; Harsa, Hayriye Şebnem; Güneş, HaticeAims: To isolate Bacillus thuringiensis strains from different olive-related habitats (olive groves and olive oil factories) in Turkey and to characterize these strains by molecular methods. Methods and Results: A total of 150 samples, consisting of olive grove soil, green olive leaves, olive leaf residues, animal faeces, olive pomace and dust, were examined for the presence of B. thuringiensis. One hundred B. thuringiensis strains were isolated from 54 environmental samples (36%) and characterized in terms of crystal morphology, cry and cyt gene content by polymerase chain reaction, plasmid profiles and 16S-internal transcribed spacer ribosomal DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (16S-ITS rDNA RFLP). The highest percentage of samples containing B. thuringiensis was found in 38 out of 54 total soil samples (70%). Of the 100 B. thuringiensis isolates, the most frequent crystal shapes were irregularly shaped (24%), spherical-irregular pointed (19%), cuboidal (17%) and spherical (16%). The cry1 plus cry4 genotype was the most abundant genotype in our collection (21%). RFLP analysis of the amplified 16S-ITS rDNA revealed 11 distinct patterns for the isolates and 10 reference strains. Conclusions: Bacillus thuringiensis isolates showed a great genetic diversity and crystal shape heterogeneity. Significance and Impact of the Study: This is the first study on the isolation and characterization of B. thuringiensis from olive-related habitats in Turkey. No correlation was observed between the cry genotypes and insecticidal crystal shapes of the isolates. Restriction profiles of 23% of the isolates were found to be different from those of the 10 reference strains used.
