Article The Relation of Geogenic and Antrophogenic Factors with Blood and Hair Lead and Arsenic Levels in Women Living in Can and Bayramic Districts of Canakkale Province(Nobel Ilac, 2019) Baba, Alper; Gunduz, Orhan; Bakar, Coskun; Sulun, Serdar; Save, DilsadObjective: Mining areas and associated industrial activities carry considerable risks for human health due to multi-pathway exposure of heavy metals such as arsenic and lead. The objective of this study was to compare arsenic and lead levels it human blood and hair samples in all industrial mining area in northwestern Turkey with that of non-exposed group demonstrating similar sociocultural characteristics. Material and Method: The population of the study consisted of 674 nonsmoker women over the age of 40 who were selected on random basis from mine region and control area. Venous blood samples were taken and analyzed fur blood lead and arsenic levels in all participants. Hair samples were later collected from 108 women with high levels in blood samples. Results: The results showed that the highest prevalence of occurrences was found in district centers whereas relatively lower values were observed in the villages. Hail arsenic and lead levels were comparably higher in the industrialized area (can Region) where low-quality coal combustion used in power generation and residential heating were dominant. Conclusion: Although high correlations were not found, blood and hair arsenic and lead levels in individuals living in industrial in agricultural areas were found to he high at levels influencing the human health On the other hand, these results should be further supported and verified with advanced and long duration monitoring activities.Article Citation - WoS: 1Modules Whose Maximal Submodules Have Τ-Supplements(Luhansk Taras Shevchenko Natl Univ, 2010) Buyukasik, EnginLet R be a ring and tau be a preradical for the category of left R-modules. With their high acquisition and labeling complexity, this also applies to fingerprints. In the literature, a number of synthetic fingerprint generation systems have been proposed, but mostly for algorithm evaluation purposes. In this paper, we aim to analyze the use of synthetic fingerprint data with different levels of degradation for training deep neural networks. Fingerprint classification problem is selected as a case-study and the experiments are conducted on a public domain database, NIST SD4. In routine microbiology laboratory, species identification based on phenotypic characters may not yield identical results with taxonomic studies. Lipophilic and lipid-dependent Malassezia yeasts require lipid-enriched complex media. For this reason, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis focused on lipid window may be useful for identification of Malassezia species. In this study, 10 different standard Malassezia species (M.dermatis CBS 9145, M.furfur CBS 7019, M.japonica CBS 9432, M.globosa CBS 7966, M.nana CBS 9561, M.obtusa CBS 7876, M.pachydermatis CBS 1879, M.slooffiae CBS 7956, M.sympodialis CBS 7222 and M.yamatoensis CBS 9725) which are human pathogens, have been analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy following standard cultivation onto modified Dixon agar medium. Results showed that two main groups (M1; M.globosa, Robtusa, M.sympodialis, M.dermatis, M.pachydermatis vs, M2; M.furfur, M.japonica, M.nana, M.slooffiae, M.yamatoensis) were discriminated by whole spectra analysis. M.obtusa in M1 by 1686-1606 cm(-1) wavenumber ranges and M.japonicum in M2 by 2993-2812 cm(-1) wavenumber ranges were identified with low level discrimination power. Discriminatory areas for species differentiation of M1 members as M.sympodialis, M.globosa and M.pachydermatis and M2 members as M.furfur and M.yamatoensis could not be identified. In this study the replaceability of fill strata without cement prepared subgrade layer and with cement addition one is investigated. In the experiments the specimens composed of natural sand with different cement additions and two w/c ratios were used. The Plaxis-FEM (2D) program was employed to find the maximum expected total settlements of HSTR embankments with cemented subgrade layer. Furthermore, the artificial neural networks model was constructed to predict the failure stress, elasticity modulus and strains. The sensivity analysis has revealed that cement content was the most sensitive for stress and elasticity modulus predictions, while the curing age of specimens was for the strain forecast.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Comparison of Advanced Daylighting Systems To Improve Illuminance and Uniformity Through Simulation Modelling(Znack Publishing House, 2014) Kazanasmaz, Zehra Tuğçe; Fırat Örs, PelinDeficiencies in daylighting performance (illuminance and uniformity) of educational facilities may cause health problems, work performance loss and excessive energy consumption. The varying nature of daylight in daily and yearly basis is a strong challenge on that matter. Advanced daylighting systems have been developed to overcome this challenge. Improving the daylighting performance of existing buildings is another difficulty in daylighting design. Daylighting design needs should be carefully considered at the initial design stages of the buildings. So, the aim of this study was to improve the illuminance and uniformity in four selected architectural design studios in Izmir. Measurements of daylight illuminance were conducted in May and June 2012. Simulation models were built in Ecotect/Radiance. To reach the best daylighting performance, simulations were carried out by Desktop Radiance with applying laser cut panels, prismatic panels and light shelves. It is considered that retrofitting efforts after the construction would be inadequate regarding daylighting, unless complying with the standards during the design process.Article Citation - WoS: 1Analysis of Alicyclobacillus Acidoterrestris Spores From Different Sporulation Media Subjected To Wet-Heat(PagePress Publications, 2015) Molva, Çelenk; Baysal, Ayşe HandanThe presence of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris endospores in fruit juices is a significant problem for the juice industry since they are able to survive pasteurization subsequently leading to the spoilage. To evaluate the mechanism of wet-heat, structural damage and the leakages of intracellular materials of A. acidoterrestris DSM 3922 spores from different sporulation media was studied at 90 degrees C (15-45 min). For sporulation, Bacillus acidoterrestris agar, Bacillus acidocaldarius agar, potato dextrose agar and malt extract agar were used. Based on the scanning electron microscopy, loss of internal volume and structural integrity were observed following heating which were further confirmed by the leakages of intracellular components. The obtained results suggest that the inactivation of A. acidoterrestris DSM 3922 spores by wet-heat is associated with damage to the coat and inner membrane depending on the sporulation medium composition and heating time.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Endogenous Heat Shock Protein Groel of A. One of the virulence factors of periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is heat shock protein GroEL (AaGroEL), which has been shown to interact with host cells. AaGroEL (Hsp64) also has the potential to modulate immune system cells. In this study we used endogenous AaGroEL protein as an antigen to study bacterial Hsp-induced apoptosis in different immune system cells. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and cell lines were cultured with different doses (50-1000 ng/mL) of endogenous AaGroEL at various time points. Apoptosis of the cells was measured by Annexin V and 7AAD labeling. Apoptotic cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Our data suggested that AaGroEL-responding primary CD8+ T cells were more susceptible to apoptosis than CD4+ T cells. Furthermore, the magnitude of apoptosis in the Jurkat T cell line was higher than that in primary CD8+ T cells. There was no statistically significant level of apoptosis in the chronic myeloid leukemia (K562) cell line, which belongs to myeloid lineages. Thus, A. actinomycetemcomitans GroEL protein has more potent apoptotic effect on cells that are derived from a lymphoid progenitor.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Spin-Orbit Coupling and Optical Detection of Spin Polarisation in Triangular Graphene Quantum Dots(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2015) Potasz, P.; Güçlü, Alev Devrim; Özfidan, I.; Hawrylak, P.We present a theory of the effect of spin-orbit coupling on optical properties of triangular graphene quantum dots (TGQD). TGQDs with zigzag edges exhibit a degenerate band of states at the Fermi level. For the charge neutral TGQD, the shell is expected to be half-filled by spin polarised electrons leading to finite magnetisation. Using four-band tight-binding and effective Kane-Mele models, we show that, if the TGQD is spin polarised, the low energy optical absorption spectrum reveals two distinct peaks corresponding to left and right circularly polarised light while the unpolarised TGQD shows only one peak. This allows optical detection of spin polarisation, its direction and the strength of spin-orbit coupling in TGQDs.
