Article Tc-99m Erythromycin Lactobionate Inhalation Scintigraphy in Parenchymal Lung Diseases(Elsevier Science inc, 1999) Durak, H; Aktogu, S; Degirmenci, B; Sayit, E; Ertay, T; Dereli, SWe have investigated Technetium 99m erythromycin lactobionate (Tc 99m EL) clearance from the lungs after inhalation, in the presence of an alveolitis. Eighteen patients (6 sarcoidosis, 7 idiopathic fibrosis, and 5 miliary tuberculosis) were imaged after the patients inhaled 1,110 MBq of Tc 99m EL. Clearance half time for the first 45 min, for 24 h, and retention at 24 h correlated with percentage of lymphocytes in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) (r =.729, r =.883, and r =.826, respectively). There was a positive correlation between peripheral penetration (PP) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) (r =.806) and forced vital capacity (FVC) (r =.781). Retention was more marked in sarcoidosis compared with tuberculosis (0.025 < p less than or equal to 0.05). Radioaerosol lung imaging may reflect the pulmonary function impairment in parenchymal lung diseases. Retention of Tc 99m EL may be related to number of BAL cells or presence of a lymphocytic alveolitis. Long residency time of Tc 99m EL in the lungs implies that erythromycin can also be administered by inhalation for therapeutic purposes. NUCL MED BIOL 26;6:695-698, 1999. The analysis is based on a 4.98 fb(-1) sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC. Three separate background estimation methods, each relying primarily on control samples in the data, are applied to a range of signal regions, providing complementary approaches for estimating the background yields. The observed yields are consistent with the predicted standard model backgrounds. The introduction compares Detroit with other cities throughout the world, such as Berlin, Moscow and Birmingham among others, in terms of its spatial organization and population loss.Article Citation - WoS: 16Cumulative Clinical Experience From a Decade of Use: Imatinib as First-Line Treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia(Dove Medical Press Ltd., 2012) Baran, Yusuf; Saydam, GürayChronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a malignant disease that originates in the bone marrow and is designated by the presence of the Philadelphia (Ph+) chromosome, a translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22. Targeted therapy against CML commenced with the development of small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) exerting their effect against the oncogenic breakpoint cluster region (BCR)-ABL fusion protein. Imatinib emerged as the first successful example of a TKI used for the treatment of chronic-phase CML patients and resulted in significant improvements in response rate and overall survival compared with previous treatments. However, a significant portion of patients failed to respond to the therapy and developed resistance against imatinib. Second-generation TKIs nilotinib and dasatinib were to have higher efficiency in clinical trials in imatinib- resistant or intolerant CML patients com pared with imatinib. Identification of novel strategies such as dose escalation, drug combination therapy, and use of novel BCR-ABL inhibitors may eventually overcome resistance against BCR-ABL TKIs. This article reviews the history of CML, including the treatment strategies used prediscovery of TKIs and the preclinical and clinical data obtained after the use of imatinib, and the second-generation TKIs developed for the treatment of CML.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11Cfd Characteristics of Refrigerated Trailers and Improvement of Airflow for Preserving Perishable Foods(MDPI, 2019) Yildiz,T.When preserving perishable goods, maintaining a constant temperature over the cold supply chain is essential. Therefore, refrigerated vehicles are an important part of the cold supply chain system. However, many traditional refrigerated cargo systems are not designed to support the homogeneity of the temperature inside cargo trailers. Indeed, refrigerating equipment is usually placed on one side of transportation systems as this is considered to be more practical. Such a configuration thus leads to significant temperature differences in the two distinct parts of a refrigerated cargo trailer, which might affect the quality, safety, and shelf life of perishable foods. This research aims to improve the temperature distribution of refrigerated trailers. In this study, it is highlighted that in the most commonly used traditional refrigerated trailer models, lower air velocity and higher product temperature are observed at the rear. There is also a partial product chilling risk at the front of the refrigerated trailer. This study investigates and reports significant differences among the three airflow design models of refrigerated cargo systems by applying turbulence flow, heat, and mass transfer models. The analyses of these three models reveal that significant improvement could be achieved by applying the proper arrangements of inlets on the ceiling of the trailer body. © 2019 by the author.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 17Design and Analysis of a Lightweight Composite Shipping Container Made of Carbon Fiber Laminates(MDPI, 2019) Yildiz,T.The literature indicates that a 20% reduction in the weight of empty 40-foot shipping containers would result in $28 billion of fuel savings, along with a 3.6 exajoule reduction in the energy demand over containers’ 15-year lifetime. Decreasing the energy demand and thereby greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing lightweight shipping containers has been an unexplored strategy. In this regard, this study investigates the possibility of further reducing the weight of an empty container without compromising the structural integrity, strength, and function of a traditional steel container. This research finds that up to an 80% reduction in weight is possible by producing shipping containers with composite materials. This research presents the new design of a 40-foot container made of carbon fiber laminates. The tare weight of a traditional 40-foot shipping container is around 3750 kg. On the contrary, in this research, the weight of a composite design of the same container is calculated to be around 822 kg. Additional tests with various loads, such as lifting the container and stacking loads onto the composite container, are performed to explore the strength and buckling issues of the design presented in this study. The analyses reveal that the composite shipping container is a highly promising candidate for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, providing fuel savings and thus reducing the operational costs of transportation. © 2019 by the author.Article Citation - WoS: 111Stabilization of Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Biological Media by Fetal Bovine Serum (fbs)(American Chemical Society, 2011) Wiogo, Hilda T. R.; Lim, May; Bulmuş, Volga; Yun, Jimmy; Amal, RoseA facile method of stabilizing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) in biological media (RPMI-1640) via surface modification with fetal bovine scrum (FBS) is presented herein. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) shows that the size of the MNP aggregates can be maintained at 190 +/- 2 nm for up to 16 h in an RPMI 1640 culture medium containing >= 4 vol % FBS. Under transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a layer of protein coating is observed to cover the MNP surface following treatment with FBS. The adsorption of proteins is further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gel electrophoresis and LC-MS/MS studies reveal that complement factor I-I, antithrombin, complement factor I, alpha-1-antiproteinase, and apolipoprotein E are the proteins most strongly attached to the surface of all MNP. These surface-adsorbed proteins serve as a linker that aids the adsorption of other serum proteins, such as albumin, which otherwise adsorb poorly onto MNPs. The size stability of FBS-treated MNPs in biological media is attributed to the secondary adsorbed proteins, and the size stability in biological media can be maintained only when both the surface-adsorbed proteins and the secondary adsorbed proteins are present on the particle's surface.Article Citation - WoS: 14Supercritical Ethanol Drying of Zinc Borates of 2zno Center Dot 3b(2)o(3)center Dot 3h(2)o and Zno Center Dot B2o3 Center Dot 2h(2)o(Elsevier Ltd., 2011) Gönen, Mehmet; Balköse, Devrim; Ülkü, SemraSupercritical ethanol (SCE) drying of zinc borates was investigated to obtain dry zinc borate nanoparticles and to elucidate possible chemical interactions between zinc borates and ethanol. Commercial and synthesized 2ZnO center dot 3B(2)O(3)center dot 3H(2)O and ZnO center dot B2O3 center dot 2H(2)O samples were dried by both conventional and SCE drying methods and the products were compared. Zinc borates were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and helium pycnometer. Zn and B contents of samples were also determined by analytical titration. It was found that zinc borate of ZnO center dot B2O3 center dot 2H(2)O decomposed completely into zinc oxide and boric acid. However, zinc borate having oxide formula of 2ZnO center dot 3B(2)O(3)center dot 3H(2)O decomposed partially to form anhydrous zinc borate, zinc oxide, water and boric acid during the SCE drying carried out at 250 degrees C and 6.5 MPa. Boric acid and water were extracted from both of zinc borates by supercritical ethanol. The extraction of boric acid by ethanol in the SCE drying of zinc borates is an important result which can be utilized in the production of boric acid from water insoluble natural minerals, e.g. colemanite. Solid-state fermentation offers several potential advantages for enzyme production by fungal strains. Utilization of agricultural by-products as low-cost substrates for microbial enzyme production resulted in an economical and promising process. The pectinolytic enzyme activities of two Aspergillus sojae strains were compared to a known producer, Aspergillus niger IMI 91881, and to A. sojae ATCC 20235, which was re-classified as Aspergillus oryzae. Evaluation of polymethylgalacturonase and polygalacturonase activity was performed as well as exo- vs. endo-enzyme activity in the crude pectinase enzyme-complex of the mentioned strains. Furthermore, a plate diffusion assay was applied to determine the presence and action of proteases in the crude extracts. A. sojae ATCC 20235 with highest polymethylgalacturonase activity and highest polygalacturonase activity both exo- and endo-enzyme activity, is a promising candidate for industrial pectinase production, a group of enzymes with high commercial value, in solid-state fermentation processes. Beside the enzymatic assays a protein profile of each strain is given by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and in addition species-specific zymograms for pectinolytic enzymes were observed, revealing the differences in protein pattern of the A. sojae strains to the re-classified A. oryzae.
