Modernity, Hygiene and Display of the Body
(Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi, 2016) Yılmaz, Ebru; Yılmaz, Ebru; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
This article focuses on health museums as a building type introduced to the architectural medium at the beginning of 20th century by modern thinking, the ideal of creating a healthy society as a guarantee of progress and development. Health museums provided representation for concepts of modernity and hygiene in a built environment by being spaces that displayed the human body and exhibits related to diseases, hygiene, and medical developments. A modest building in scale and content, the Izmir Health Exhibition building of the Izmir Fair was analyzed in this study to show how it contributed to 1920s and 1930s modern architecture in Turkey and what were the representational meanings of the messages transmitted. The existence of this building, constructed in 1937 in Izmir, should be understood in the context of health policies from all around the world, social engineering efforts, and the process of modernization. The building is an example of a use of modern architecture, but of a type that is waning in popularity in today's contemporary world. Looking back at this building today helps us understand the rising and declining value of modernity in the discourse of hygiene and its effect on the field of architecture. The contribution of the Izmir Health Exhibition building to early modern Turkish architecture is discussed with reference to similar exhibitions and museums around the world.

On the Relation Between Architectural Considerations and Heating Energy Performance of Turkish Residential Buildings in Izmir
(Elsevier Ltd., 2014) Kazanasmaz, Zehra Tuğçe; Erlalelitepe Uygun, İlknur; Turhan, Cihan; Turhan, Cihan; Ekmen, Kenan Evren; Kazanasmaz, Zehra Tuğçe; Gökçen Akkurt, Gülden; 02.02. By considering the energy efficiency legislations among the European Union, Turkey is responsible to provide regulations to comply for the latest European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2010/31/EC. New legislation in Turkey requires information about the evaluation of energy performance of existing buildings. This study aimed to determine energy performance of residential buildings in Izmir, regarding significant relationships between their performance and architectural configuration through statistical analysis. The focus was on the heating energy consumption due to Energy Efficiency Law (2007) and Building Energy Performance Regulation (2008), and Standard Assessment Method for Energy Performance of Dwellings (KEP-SDM). This energy performance assessment method was based on Turkish standard TS 825, and European standard EN ISO 13790. It is known that architectural configuration of buildings and design norms have impact on energy performance of buildings. However, emphasis was given on significant values of architectural considerations through certain area-based ratios. The levels of these ratios were matched with the levels of energy consumption. By this, the consideration was to take early-precautions against high energy consumptions in the early design stage and to enhance legislation by adding recommendations of concrete architectural values. These would assist to predict the level of energy performance in the early design phase. Findings would provide feedback information on the residential building stock in İzmir, Turkey.
