User Selection for Secure Massive Mimo Based Mobile Edge Computing With Delay-Sensitive Applications
(IEEE, 2025) Yilmaz, Saadet Simay; Ozbek, Berna
Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been a promising technology that leverages cloud computing capabilities at the network edge to address compute-intensive and delay-sensitive applications of mobile users with limited resources. Employing massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the MEC system facilitates simultaneous task offloading for multiple users, resulting in increased spectral efficiency and decreased offloading delay. Despite the great potential of the mMIMO-NOMA-based MEC system, offloading computation tasks to MEC servers can introduce inherent security concerns and vulnerabilities. We address a notable gap in the existing literature by investigating the effect of user selection to minimize the delay in MEC while enhancing the security of this framework. Specifically, this paper presents a user selection strategy for an uplink mMIMO-NOMA-based secure MEC system in the presence of a malicious eavesdropper (Eve) to minimize offloading and computing delays, subject to the transmit power, computing resource, and secrecy rate constraints with remote computing. We propose a two-step secure user selection algorithm and solve the optimization problem with the active-set algorithm. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed user selection strategy on secure MEC with a malicious Eve by minimizing the task execution delay compared to the benchmark schemes.

Integrated Space Domain Awareness and Communication System
(IEEE, 2023) Geçgel Çetin, Selen; Özbek, Berna; Karabulut Kurt, Güneş
Space has been reforming and this evolution brings new threats that, together with technological developments and malicious intent, can pose a major challenge. Space domain awareness (SDA), a new conceptual idea, has come to the forefront. It aims sensing, detection, identification and countermeasures by providing autonomy, intelligence and flexibility against potential threats in space. In this study, we first present an insightful and clear view of the new space. Secondly, we propose an integrated SDA and communication (ISDAC) system for attacker detection. We assume that the attacker has advanced communication capabilities to vary attack scenarios, such as random attacks on some receiver antennas. To track random patterns and meet SDA requirements, a lightweight convolutional neural network architecture is developed. The proposed ISDAC system shows superior and robust performance under 12 different super-attacker configurations with a detection accuracy of over 97.8%. © 2023 IEEE.

(IEEE, 2023) Ilguy, Mert; Ozbek, Berna; Musavian, Leila; Mumtaz, Rao
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is one of the promising key technologies for next generation wireless communication systems since it smartly controls wireless propagation environments. Besides, the combination of wireless physical network coding (PNC) and multiple antennas improves the overall system performance. In this paper, we propose an efficient RIS-assisted PNC with multiple antennas to reduce delay and error probability while establishing reliable transmission between the users which are far from each other and communicating via a base station with the help of the RISs. The extensive performance results are provided for the proposed scheme for the RIS-assisted PNC with multiple antennas.

Detection Scheme for Pnc-Based Cell-Free Mimo Systems
(IEEE, 2023) Cumali, Irem; Ozbek, Berna; Kurt, Gunes Karabulut
Cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (cell-free MIMO) is a promising concept to overcome inter-cell interference and avoid non-uniform data rates among users by combining the best features of ultra-dense networks and MIMO. Hence, cell-free MIMO can fulfill the increasing demand on data rate with uniformly good coverage for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications. In addition to that, physical-layer network coding (PNC) reduces the transmission delay since it requires only two time slots instead of four time slots to exchange information between two users. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme called PNC-based cell-free MIMO to improve reliability further while reducing the transmission delay. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme regarding the bit error rate in different system configurations. The proposed PNC-based cell-free MIMO achieves significantly lower error probability than the conventional cell-free MIMO.

Physical Layer Network Coding Enabled Noma With Multiple Antennas
(IEEE, 2022) İlgüy, Mert; Özbek, Berna; Okyere, Bismark; Musavian, Leila; Pereira, Aathur
In this work, a combination of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with multiple antennas and physical layer network coding (PNC) scheme is proposed to increase the overall data rate. In the proposed scheme, we employ higher-order modulations for the users with relatively high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the PNC-NOMA pair to increase the data rate. Meanwhile, lower-order modulations are chosen for the users with relatively lower SNR values in the PNC-NOMA pair. We showed the results in terms of bit error rate (BER) for different number of antennas and users in the proposed PNC-NOMA scheme. © 2022 IEEE.

Interference Mitigation for Device-To Based Cellular Communications
(IEEE, 2022) Acar, Süleyman Onur; Özbek, Berna
Device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks can improve the performance of cellular systems and it provides an effective way to meet growing mobile traffic and capacity demand. When user equipments are located in close proximity, they can communicate through direct links. In this case, D2D links can increase both energy and spectrum efficiency by reusing uplink (UL) cellular resources while satisfying the users' quality-of-service requirements. However, integrating D2D links into the cellular infrastructure causes an interference since D2D communication can increase co-channel interference and degrade cellular users' transmission link quality. In this paper, the interference mitigation techniques including power control, multiple antenna and resource allocation based on graph coloring are proposed for D2D communications underlaying cellular systems to increase the data rate of both the cellular users and D2D pairs. Compared to the prior works, in the proposed algorithm, D2D and cellular users have same priority for resource allocation. Finally, the proposed algorithm improves the overall system capacity significantly.

Limited Feedback Design for Massive Full Dimension Mimo Systems
(IEEE, 2022) Özbek, Berna; Arslan, Caner; Demirtaş, Mahmut; Şahan, Hüsne; Kadı, Furkan Kerim; Elçi, Erdem
Massive Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) systems serve simultaneously multiple users to increase spectral efficiency in wireless communication systems. Using two dimension antenna design for massive MIMO systems namely massive FD-MIMO, the overall system performance is further improved. For the massive FD-MIMO systems, the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the base station is essential to achieve overall performance gain. In this paper, we design limited feedback link for massive FD-MIMO by designing two separate codebooks for horizontal and elevation domains to reduce the feedback load. The simulation results are provided for the proposed scheme by considering 3-dimension wireless channel models.

Yüksek İrtifa Platform İstasyonları için Korelasyon Matrisinin Yaklaşımı
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021) Cengiz, Aybüke; Tedik Başaran, Semiha; Karabulut Kurt, Güneş; Özbek, Berna; Yanıkömeroğlu, Halim
A High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) is a new and promising technology with different uses like wireless communication services, traffic monitoring, navigation applications and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Since it is positioned much higher than ground-level users, line-of-sight (LOS) is more common in HAPS systems. Especially in HAPS systems that include multiple antennas, the effect of correlation between antennas is an important factor limiting the performance. The effect of correlation is strongly influenced by the spacing between the antenna elements and environmental factors. This effect can be reduced by the effect of rich scattering environment in terrestrial Multi-Input/Multi-Output (MIMO) systems, yet this observation is not applicable to HAPS systems. In this study, a tight bound expression for the correlation matrix which does not have an expression in closed form and has a significant place in the performance of HAPS systems has been obtained. Comprehensive numerical values have been obtained under different system parameters to demonstrate the convergence performance of the approximate expression to the real value, and the results have been compared. © 2021 IEEE.

(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014) Baştürk, İlhan; Özbek, Berna
OFDMA-based mobile relay enhanced cellular networks which have lower infrastructure cost and larger coverage areas are important technologies for the next generation communication systems since they allow to communicate at higher data rates. However, it is required to develop efficient radio resource management algorithms in order to reveal these advantages. Thus, in this study, relay selection and resource allocation algorithms are proposed for the mobile relay enhanced cellular networks. It is revealed that the number of satisfied users and the data rate of the cell-edge users that are far from the base station and have lower channel gains are increased by using mobile relays with the proposed algorithms.
