    Turkey has become the first and main transition hub for Syrian refugees. Furthermore, Turkey is spatially as well as culturally simultaneously referred to as European and Asian or Middle Eastern depending the point of view. Therefore, the representation of refugees in the Turkish press proves significant for the knowledge produced about refugees. Accordingly, this chapter strives to investigate the coverage of Syrian refugees in newspapers, which constitutes only one aspect of the overall reception of the issue in Turkey, and therefore does not claim to be exhaustive. Yet, because daily newspapers are still among the most important media sectors in Turkey, they constitute a special case of knowledge production worth investigating.

    Micromobility Data Need and Data Use

    In micromobility studies, data plays an important role, enabling the assessment of many aspects of mobility. Various data types are used to explore areas such as safety, policy evaluation, urban planning, and environmental sustainability. This chapter reviews the primary data types, sources, and collection methods in micromobility studies, including sensor data, surveys, field observations, built environment data, and archival data sources. Sensor data, such as mobile phone GPS and vehicle sensors, provide detailed insights intomobility patterns and environmental conditions but lack socio-demographic information. Surveys and observations are the primary data sources for user behavior and use of infrastructure. Built environment data examines factors like density, diversity, and design influencing micromobility. Archival data, including media reports and public records, are crucial for policy analysis and safety evaluations. The chapter also includes common practices in data preprocessing to enhance data accuracy, supporting researchers in advancing micromobility studies.

    Challenges Faced by Closed Basins From the Perspective of Water Resources: Case Studies From Türkiye

    Closed basins form important hydrological systems that provide a variety of benefits to both the environment and humans. This chapter examines the current status of closed basins in Turkiye and analyzes the natural and anthropogenic environmental stressors affecting these regions. Two distinct case studies are covered in this chapter: the Konya Closed Basin (KCB) and the Karakuyu region. Konya Closed Basin has experienced severe drought and sinkhole issues as a result of misapplications and excessive water consumption. The severity and frequency of water-related problems are increasing day by day due to the impact of climate change in the region. Agricultural activity and irrigation needs are high in the Karakuyu region, which is considered a second case study and is a small part of the Kucuk Menderes River Basin. It is hoped that with improved management practices, Karakuyu will not experience the condition of KCB in the future. The final section outlines the recommended practices and precautionary measures for addressing issues associated with closed basins.

    Issues and Challenges in Sustainable Usage of Groundwater Resources in Afghanistan

    Globally, Afghanistan is currently a frontrunner in groundwater scarcity due to unplanned urbanization, rapid rise in population, climate change, weak policies, mismanagement, and lack of long-term vision. Frequent weather extremes like droughts and floods and prolonged war and political instability lead the country far away from achieving water security, food reliance and sustainable management of its natural resources. The war situation also refrains in gathering of long-term hydrological data and thus, there is a huge gap in understanding the water resources even better. Furthermore, aids from international organizations are limited in groundwater development and management. This chapter highlights various issues and challenges in sustainable usage and the importance of groundwater in the country. The chapter compiles the research carried out with regard to Afghanistan's quest to manage its groundwater resources more efficiently.

    A Historical Review of Polyhedral Linkages

    Polyhedral linkages are linkages that resemble polyhedral shapes at different configurations. This paper summarizes the necessary geometrical fundamentals of polyhedral geometry and presents a historical and critical review of the polyhedral linkage designs available in the literature. Basic definitions of polyhedral geometry and operations are needed to comprehend and design polyhedral linkages. First, early works on polyhedral linkages are presented, where flexible polyhedra with rigid faces and flexible edges are issued. The final part is reserved to conformal polyhedral linkages, which go through shape transformations while plane, dihedral and solid angles are preserved. Conformal polyhedral linkages are examined in four categories: 1) Jitterbug-like linkages with screwing polygonal links connected to each other with dihedral angle preserving links, 2) polyhedral linkages with planar kinematic chains in radial motion planes, 3) polyhedral linkages with planar kinematic chains on faces, that are connected to each other with dihedral angle preserving links, and 4) other conformal polyhedral linkages. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

    Exopolysaccharides in Food Processing Industrials

    Microbial exopolysaccharides are a class of extracellular carbohydrates based on biopolymeric materials produced and secreted by bacteria, yeast, molds, and microalgae. Cellulose, pullulan, xanthan gum, dextran, kefiran, curdlan, emulsan, alginate, gellan, carrageenans, hyaluronic acid, levan, colanic acid, welan, glucuronides, succinoglycans, and mutan are the exopolysaccharides (EPSs) of different microbial origin. Most of the available EPSs are non-toxic, biocompatible, biodegradable, and obtain from renewable resources. Microbial EPSs display unique functional properties due to their nature and structural composition. The demand for natural microbial EPSs utilization in the food industry due to their unique properties, including emulsifier, gelling agent, and stabilizers. Microbial EPSs and their derivatives have found a wide range of applications in food systems, including fermented dairy products, bakery products, cereal-based products, beverages, delivery of active agents, coatings, and films. This chapter will present a comprehensive overview of the recent developments of EPSs and their potential utilization in the food industry.
