V.In this study, heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of reactive azo dye Rhodamine 6G in water was investigated over a CuFeZSM-5 zeolite catalyst prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. At initial pH of 3.4, a color removal of 100% was achieved after a reaction time of 45min. TOC elimination was measured to be 51.8% after 2h of oxidation. Initial decolorization rate was described by an equation of -rA0=4.56×102 e-24.83/RTCR6G,0CH2O2,00.35 where R is in kJ/mol. The leaching of iron and copper cations from zeolite structure into the solution during oxidation was dependent on pH strongly. The regulation of pH from 6.5 (dye solution pH) to 3.4, increased leaching for iron from 0.7 to 0.8mg/dm3 and for copper from 1.4 to 2.1mg/dm3. Setting times of grouts were also determined as part of the experimental study. For comparison, grout mixtures were also prepared with a commercially available viscosity modifying admixture (VMA). The experimental results show that addition of natural zeolite modifies both the rheological and workability properties of grouts. For a constant superplasticizer (SP) content, an increase in the zeolite amount significantly increases the yield stress, the apparent and plastic viscosity, and reduces the fluidity and deformability. Moreover, an increase in the amount of SP causes a significant reduction in both the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the grouts. It was also observed that, grouts prepared with natural zeolite addition have a pseudo-plastic behavior, and shear-thinning behavior increases with an increase in the zeolite amount. The conformity of the cure kinetic data of epoxy and epoxy-zeolite system was checked with the auto-catalytic cure rate model. The results indicated that the hydroxyl group on the zeolite surface played a significant role in the autocatalytic reaction mechanism. This group was able to form a new transition state between anhydride hardener and epoxide group. In this study, thermal behavior of zeolitic tuff quarried from Gördes-Manisa, region of Turkey was investigated. Zeolitic rocks were first reduced to 2 μm and pellets were prepared by dry-pressing. The pellets were heated for 30 min in the temperature range of 200-1200 °C. Heating the tuff up to 600 °C did not cause any structural change detectable by X-Ray powder diffraction (X-Ray), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal characterization methods with regard to the original sample, while further increase in the temperature caused structural breakdown of zeolitic tuff. The appearance of the broad low intensity peaks in X-Ray diffraction diagrams indicated most probably a partial transformation of crystal structure into an amorphous structure. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs showed that the crystals seen in the original rock sample were broken during grinding and pressing processes. The crystal structure disappeared above 1000 °C and the spherical pores was observed at 1200 °C. Chemical composition of the zeolitic tuff did not change significantly with respect to temperature. The highest density (2.28 g/cm3) and hardness (387 Hv) were obtained by sintering the pellets at 1000 °C for 30 min.Article Citation - WoS: 112Citation - Scopus: 130The Effect of Hcl Treatment on Water Vapor Adsorption Characteristics of Clinoptilolite Rich Natural Zeolite(Elsevier Ltd., 2005) Çakıcıoğlu Özkan, Fehime; Ülkü, SemraIn this study, water vapor adsorption properties of the clinoptilolite rich zeolite tuff, from Bigadic (Turkey), and its modified forms were examined. The modified forms were obtained by treating the tuff with HCl solutions (0.032, 0.16, 0.32, 1.6 or 5 M) at 25,40,75 and 100°C for 3 h. Infrared spectroscppy and water vapor adsorption were used for the characterization of the zeolites. Langmuir, BET and Dubinin-Raduschevich methods were applied in the analysis of water vapor adsorption data. Applications of Dubinin Raduschevich equation to the water adsorption data displayed that the super-micropore volume was not very sensitive to acid treatment. It was found out that the Langmuir surface area and ultra-micropore volume depend on the degree of the removal of aluminum from the structure.Article Citation - WoS: 76Citation - Scopus: 84Characterization of Pure and Silver Exchanged Natural Zeolite Filled Polypropylene Composite Films(Elsevier Ltd., 2005) Pehlivan, Hilal; Balköse, Devrim; Ülkü, Semra; Tıhmınlıoğlu, FundaIn the present study, untreated and silver exchanged natural zeolite-polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared and characterized by means of different techniques (TGA, DSC, mechanical tests, density measurements, optical microscopy and colorometer). The effects of zeolite loading and silver concentration on the composite properties were investigated. The thermal characterization studies showed that the addition of the zeolite increased the crystallinity of the composites acting as a nucleating agent in PP crystallization and retarded the degradation of PP. At low silver concentrations, the zeolite behaved as a decelerating agent in PP degradation, however at higher silver concentrations, the composites degraded at a faster rate than pure PP. The experimental densities of the composites were found to be lower than the theoretical densities. When the tensile tested samples are considered, the densities were even lower indicating porous structure of the films. From the optical micrographs of the tensile tested films, it was clearly seen that the stretching along the machine direction caused hole formation around the particles. The optimum conditions obtained in this study for the PP-silver zeolite composite film production are in the range of 2-4 wt% zeolite treated with 4.36 mg Ag+/g zeolite. At higher zeolite loadings, the film becomes brittle and at higher Ag+ concentrations, the film produced was discolored.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 16Coke Content of Spent Commercial Fluid Catalytic Cracking (fcc) Catalysts: Determination by Temperature-Programmed Oxidation(Springer Verlag, 2003) Bayraktar, Oğuz; Kugler, Edwin L.Zeolite catalysts are widely used in oil refinery and petrochemical industries. Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts used in a refinery consist of Y zeolite, a silica-alumina matrix and a binder. In this study, spent FCC catalysts were prepared by cracking sour imported heavy gas oil (SIHGO) in a microactivity test unit. The total amount of coke and the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio (H/C) in the coke for spent FCC catalysts contaminated with metals were determined using temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO). Total H/C ratios of the coke on FCC catalysts were found to be in the range of 0.4 to 1, indicating the majority of the coke consists of polyaromatic species. H/C ratio decreased with increasing coke contents on the catalysts. This ratio was found to be higher for the catalyst with high metal concentration compared to the catalyst with relatively low metal concentration. The high H/C ratio for highly contaminated FCC catalyst was attributed to the formation of hydrogen rich coke by hydrogenation reactions catalyzed by the contaminant metals on the catalyst. After hydrogen pre-treatment both coke amount and H/C ratio decreased significantly.
