Article Optimizing Housing Floor Layout for Cool Terraces: A Comparative Analysis Using Constrained Problem Formulation(Yildiz Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2025) Ekici, Berk; Ekici, Berk; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyAs urban densification increases, thermal stress in cities becomes a problem. The integration of climate-sensitive strategies into housing design has become a necessity. As a strategy, design of terraces, as thermally configured outdoor spaces can reduce solar radiation gain. Parametric modeling, one of the computational approaches, provides significant contributions to optimizing the integration of environmental analysis into the terrace design. Although some related studies have focused on optimizing urban mass organizations for thermal comfort and solar performance, none of them have addressed spatial organization of terraces in residential buildings. This study presents a computational housing model to investigate terrace allocation with respect to solar gain, including circulation and residential units. The interstitial spaces are considered "cool terraces", and the objective is to minimize the solar radiation on terraces by optimizing the location and size of the residential units using a genetic algorithm via the Galapagos plug-in, radial basis function optimization (RBFOpt), and covariance matrix adaptation with evolution strategy (CMA-ES) using Opossum plug-in. To provide feasible spatial organization, constraints are determined using the near feasibility threshold with the Optimus plug-in. Results showed that only CMA-ES discovered feasible spatial organization while improving the solar performance of cool terraces. When compared to the benchmark design scenarios, the optimized alternative performed 11-26% improvement in solar radiation minimization. The study discusses the challenges in identifying well-performing cool terrace solutions, the complexity of the problem, and the applicability of optimization algorithms.Article Citation - WoS: 2Impact of Thermal Mass Oriented Measures Over CO2 Emissions of a Thermally Insulated Low-Rise Apartment Building in Izmir, Turkey(Selcuk Univ, 2014) Gercek, Mumine; Durmuş Arsan, Zeynep; Arsan, Zeynep Durmus; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyClimate change has drawn the attention of many researchers and practitioners to focus on the methods to address the challenges in achieving low-carbon buildings and cities and in future developments. Nevertheless, few studies have explored the impacts of thermal mass applications for the lowest carbon emissions of building operational energy consumption. A comparative study of CO2 emissions due to different wall and floor compositions is presented in accordance with their lifespans for a hot-humid climate site. Aim of this study is to examine the relation between the energy oriented operations and carbon emissions of the building. Firstly, an existing low-rise building in Izmir is selected, then modelled in the dynamic simulation model software DesignBuilder v4 by synchronizing drawings with basic operational principles of the program. Furthermore, various influence factors of building envelope thermal characteristics are selected as follows: type, location, thickness and thermal specifications of materials used by keeping thermal conductivity value constant. At the end, the research presents remarkable influence of thermal mass oriented measures on reducing energy demands and carbon footprints.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Re-Introducing Statutory Regional Spatial Planning Strategies in England: Reflections Through the Lenses of Policy Integration(Routledge, 2022) Bafarasat, Abbas Ziafati; Bafarasat, Abbas Ziafati; Robinson, Guy Martin; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyStatutory regional spatial strategies were abolished in England, United Kingdom in 2010. There are, however, increasing calls in favour of a re-introduction of statutory comprehensive spatial strategies at the regional level to enhance integrated economic growth and address exacerbating spatial inequalities. Through a survey and in-depth interviews conducted with experts and policymakers of the North-West region of England, this paper explores whether the introduction of such statutory strategies could find justificative grounds through policy integration of transportation, housing, and employment policies. We conclude with a set of mechanisms that could foster this re-introduction serving regional geographies beyond the North-West.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6'modern Konut' Olarak Xıx. Yüzyıl İzmir Konutu: Biçimsel ve Kavramsal Ortaklıklar(Middle East Technical University, 2009) Çıkış, Şeniz; Çıkış, Şeniz; 02.02. Department of Architecture; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01.
