It is a very popular and valuable medicinal plant widely distributed in Anatolia. Hypericum perforatum contains many bioactive components that play a role in activities has been used as a food supplement. The extracts are used within safe dose range that are harmless and effective for health. When the SJW1, SJW2 and SJW3 fractions of St. John's Wort extracts were exposed to zebrafish embryos and larvae at different concentrations (5, 10, 100, and 300 µg/mL), the survival rates at 96th hour were determined as 83.3, 27.5 and 2.5%, respectively. No significant changes were found in the malformation rates, and the larval emergence was found to be above 80% at 96th hour for all extracts. No caspase-3 expression was found at the 96th hour in the larvae. Similar secondary components of extracts were observed except quantitative differences. The use of samples in doses of 10 µg/mL and below as food supplement may be harmless, however, threshold dose values of H. perforatum extracts lower toxic doses may be due to the different amounts of secondary metabolites. © 2023Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 16Exploration of Three Solanum Species for Improvement of Antioxidant Traits in Tomato(American Society for Horticultural Science, 2014) Top, Oğuz; Bar, Cantuğ; Ökmen, Bilal; Yüce Özer, Duygu; Rusçuklu, Dane; Tamer, Nilüfer; Frary, Anne; Doğanlar, SamiWild tomato species have been widely used for improvement of tomato disease resistance but have not been extensively explored for health-related traits. In this work, three interspecific populations derived from backcrosses between cultivated tomato and Solanum pimpinellifolium (LA1589), S. habrochaites (LA1223), and S. peruvianum (LA2172) were analyzed for water-soluble antioxidant activity, phenolic content, vitamin C content, and basic agronomic traits including fruit weight, shape, and color. The wild species accessions significantly exceeded S. lycopersicum for all three antioxidant traits with only one exception: vitamin C content in S. habrochaites LA1223. Several populations and traits showed transgressive segregation indicating that the backcross populations contained individuals with allele combinations that allowed antioxidant activity/content to exceed that of both parents. The S. habrochaites LA1223 population provided the best starting material for improvement of water-soluble antioxidant activity and phenolics content with 20% and 15% of the population, respectively, significantly exceeding the parental values for these traits. Moreover, the S. habrochaites population contained individuals that had nearly 2-fold more water-soluble antioxidant activity and phenolic content than cultivated tomato. The S. peruvianum LA2172 population was best for improvement of vitamin C content with 3-fold variation for the trait and individuals, which had twice as much vitamin C as cultivated tomato.Article Citation - WoS: 115Citation - Scopus: 135Antioxidant Activity and Phenolic Content of Fresh and Dry Nuts With or Without the Seed Coat(Academic Press Inc., 2009) Arcan, İskender; Yemenicioğlu, AhmetTotal antioxidant activities based on ABTS free radical scavenging activity and phenolic content of fresh or dry hazelnuts, walnuts and pistachios assayed with their seed coats changed between 3063 and 11,076 μmol trolox equivalents/100 g d.w. and 256 and 755 mg gallic acid equivalents/100 g d.w., respectively. The walnuts used in this study showed the highest antioxidant activity, followed by pistachios and hazelnuts. The removal of seed coat reduced the total antioxidant activity of hazelnuts, walnuts and pistachios almost 36, 90 and 55%, respectively. The total antioxidant activities of investigated fresh and dry nuts are not considerably different. However, phenolic content and antioxidant activity in hydrophilic and ethanolic fractions obtained by successive extraction of nuts showed some variation. The antioxidant activity in 1-serving portion of fresh or dry walnuts is equivalent to that in almost 2-serving portions of black tea, and 1.2-1.7-serving portions of green and Earl Grey tea. One-serving portions of dry hazelnuts and fresh or dry pistachios contained antioxidant activity equivalent to that in 0.7-1-serving portions of black tea. The antioxidant activity measurements correlated with phenolic content (r2 = 0.70). This study showed the potential of using fresh or dry nuts to develop functional foods with high antioxidant activity.
