Therefore, different parts of 42 plant species grown in the Mediterranean region were extracted with aqueous ethanol solutions to prepare extracts with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, mainly resulting from their total phenol contents. No detailed laboratory data on the flora of this area exists regarding their total phenol contents and total antioxidant activities. Results: Yields of extraction for each plant material were determined. Extracts were characterized based on their total phenol contents, total antioxidant (both hydrophilic and lipophilic), and antimicrobial activities using Folin–Ciocalteu, Photochemiluminescence, disc diffusion, and microdilution methods, respectively. The extract of Hypericum empetrifolium had the relatively highest total water-soluble and lipid-soluble antioxidant activities. Sarcopoterium spinosum extract had relatively high total phenol content. Preliminary screening study was conducted with the disc diffusion method to evaluate the extracts' antimicrobial activities. 26 out of 42 plant species showed significant antimicrobial activities against the growth of microorganisms. Microdilution assays were performed to evaluate the most active plant species with their minimum inhibition concentrations. H. empetrifolium, Pistacia terebinthus, Arbutus unedo, and Cistus parviflorus were the most antimicrobial plant species among those investigated. CONCLUSION: The new potential sources for the isolation of bioactive natural compounds from specific plant species could be possible with the help of this present screening study. The harvesting time significantly affected their antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of these plant extracts. The applied doses of leaf extracts of C. creticus, P. lentiscus, and N. oleander resulted in higher Bax and GAPDH expressions than those for control cells. Comparison of crude extract and its fractions in terms of antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity to gain insight about cell migration rate under exogenous stress of H2O2, as a hallmark of wound healing constituted the objective of this study. Oleuropein-containing fraction exerted the highest cell migration rate among other fractions that contains hydroxytyrosol, verbascoside and luteolin, whilst treatment with high concentrations (50 mu g/ml) of this fraction simultaneously with H2O2 caused a dramatic decline in cell migration, resulting in the loss of cell adherence. Results overall indicated that active compounds caused an imbalance in redox signaling beyond a critical concentration. Comparison of fractions and crude extract also revealed that crude extract promoted cell migration by 20%, which may be attributed to synergistic effect of undefined phenolics.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 8A Research on the Production of Silk Sericin Powders by Using Spray Drying Method(Ege Üniversitesi, 2009) Genç, Gözde; Bayraktar, Oğuz; Başal, GüldemetSericin protein is usually discarded as a waste in silk industry. Production of silk sericin powders, which can be incorporated into fibers used in textile industry, by spray drying method will enable value-added utilization of waste sericin. in this study aqueous sericin solutions were used as raw material for the production of dry powders using a lab-scale spray dryer. A linear regression analyses were employed, in addition to experimental design at two levels with three factors for the analysis of three responses: moisture content, particle type and agglomeration degree. The process factors were the drying air temperature (120°C and 160°C), the feed rate (1.25x10-4 and 2.5x10-4 dms -), and the concentration of sericin solutions of 10% and 30% (w/w) fed to the spray dryer. The three responses were analyzed statistically to determine the effective parameters and it was concluded that moisture content depended on three factors-drying air temperature being the dominant parameter. Particle size and shape depended mainly on feed rate and agglomeration depended on the moisture content of the product.
