    A New Calibration Method for Charm Jet Identification Validated With Proton-Proton Collision Events at Root S=13 Tev

    Many measurements at the LHC require efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom (b) or charm (c) quarks. An overview of the algorithms used to identify c jets is described and a novel method to calibrate them is presented. This new method adjusts the entire distributions of the outputs obtained when the algorithms are applied to jets of different flavours. It is based on an iterative approach exploiting three distinct control regions that are enriched with either b jets, c jets, or light-flavour and gluon jets. Results are presented in the form of correction factors evaluated using proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1) at root s = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. The closure of the method is tested by applying the measured correction factors on simulated data sets and checking the agreement between the adjusted simulation and collision data. Furthermore, a validation is performed by testing the method on pseudodata, which emulate various mismodelling conditions. The calibrated results enable the use of the full distributions of heavy-flavour identification algorithm outputs, e.g. as inputs to machine-learning models. Thus, they are expected to increase the sensitivity of future physics analyses.

    A Novel Risk Analysis Approach for Occupational Safety Using Bayesian Network and Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Sets: the Case of Underground Mining

    Occupational safety problems are no longer acceptable for any industrial environment. Lack of comprehensive and reliable evaluations for occupational safety causes many undesired events and harm to employees during the industrial process. In this study, it is aimed to develop an applicable risk analysis methodology for evaluating the undesired occupational events that occurred in the multi-process system where no historical accident records. The difficulty in obtaining and analyzing the data required for the determination of the occupational safety risks especially in the manually executed processes has been overcome with the Bayesian Network and interval type-2 fuzzy sets by using the expert judgments. While BN enables to development of a comprehensive reasoning approach about the occurrence of the events, interval type-2 fuzzy sets better represent the ambiguity in the judgments by covering the uncertainty in a wider mathematical range with less computational effort according to other fuzzy sets. During multi-processes in industrial activity, various occupational undesired events may occur, including rare events with very serious consequences or frequent events with very low severity consequences. To able to consider all kinds of events occurring in an industrial environment from a holistic risk perspective, a novel fuzzy scale for specifying the probability and consequence of the events are proposed by the interval type-2 fuzzy numbers. Therefore, all undesired events regardless the probability and consequence which may occur during the multi-processes in a system and the main root causes of these events can be observed within the proposed methodology. A case study is used to emphasize the effect of the proposed methodology for risk analysis of occupational safety in underground mining The results have indicated that occupational safety education is the most contributing factor to occurring the undesired occupational events in underground mining We believe that this study could help evaluate the safety risk of the multi-process systems comprehensively and holistically and proposing strategic planning for mitigating the occupational safety risks.

    Performance of missing transverse momentum reconstruction in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV using the CMS detector

    The performance of missing transverse momentum ( ® pmiss T ) reconstruction algorithms for the CMS experiment is presented, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected at the CERN LHC in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb1. The results include measurements of the scale and resolution of ® pmiss T, and detailed studies of events identified with anomalous ® pmiss T . The performance is presented of a ® pmiss T reconstruction algorithm that mitigates the effects of multiple proton-proton interactions, using the "pileup per particle identification" method. The performance is shown of an algorithm used to estimate the compatibility of the reconstructed ® pmiss T with the hypothesis that it originates from resolution effects. © 2019 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    The Roma Image in the Mainstream Turkish Audiovisual Media: Sixty Years of Stereotyping

    This article seeks to address one of the most problematic lacunae in Turkey's political and academic landscape by examining the mediated images of the Roma people in Turkey. This long-neglected sub-cultural group in the Turkish context is mostly regarded as the “others” of society, who cannot speak for themselves. Their public imagination is, therefore, based heavily on narratives that are exclusively produced by non-Roma people. In order to reveal the historical construction of the popular Roma image in Turkey, we cover audiovisual material from the 1960s onward. Through a descriptive-interpretive analysis, we seek to explore how cultural and artistic narratives have contributed to and/or mirrored, and thus reproduced, the prevailing knowledge and imagination about the Roma people in Turkish society. © 2019 Liverpool University Press.     X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopic Determination of Heavy Metals and Trace Elements in Aerial Parts of Origanum Sipyleum L From Turkey

    Purpose: To determine the heavy metal and trace element composition of the powdered aerial parts of Origanum sipyleum L. and its water extract. Methods: The heavy metal and trace elements content of the powdered plant material and 2% aqueous extract were evaluated by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy with silicon drift detector SDD at a resolution of 145 eV and 10,000 pulses. The process conditions were 0.1 g sample weight, process time of 300 s at a voltage of 25 kV and 50 kV, and at a current of 0.5 and 1.0 mA under helium atmosphere. Results: The major elements, K, Ca and Na, known as macronutrients, constituted 11990, 10490 and 970 ppm of the powdered drug and 8910, 2991 and 810 ppm of the water extract, respectively. Among other constituents, arsenic, lead and uranium levels were < 1, 2.1 and < 3 ppm, respectively, in the powdered material while in the aqueous extract, the levels were < 1, < 2 and 200 ppm, respectively. Conclusion: O. sipyleum is a potential source of macro- and micronutrients from which useful food additives and health supplements can be derived.

    Elemental Analysis of Galium Incanum Sm Subsp Centrale Ehrend by X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy

    Purpose: To evaluate the content of trace elements in Galium incanum SM. subsp. centrale Ehrend. Methods: The air-dried aerial parts of the plant material were used and its water extract (2 % w/v infusion) was analysed for trace elements using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. Results: The aqueous extract depicted significant concentrations of macro- and micro-nutrients with heavy metal and metal oxide content of 4.07 - 6.02 and 3.19 - 4.01 % for powdered plant material and water extract, respectively. The contents of Ca (22840 ppm) and K (8204 ppm) were the highest among all the elements while Zn (45.9 ppm) and Fe (328 ppm) were also detected in significant amounts. Zn, Mn and Cu showed the highest content while those of Mg, Al, K, Ca, Fe and P lowest in the water extract. Conclusion: The presence of significant levels of Ca, K, Na, Fe, Zn, Mg, Mn and Cu in G. incanum subsp. centrale showed that this plant has notable nutrient elements. The traditional use of Gallium species as a diuretic may be attributed to its rich content of potassium.
