    Ephesos in a Capitalist World

    In this paper, the use of the registered site of Ephesos for archaeological excavations and restorations that enliven tourism activities is analyzed as a response to mechanisms of the competitive market in our capitalist world, by putting the site to its socially most valued use and harvesting its productive capacity. The question remains whether the transformation of Ephesos into Turkey's most important tourism capital as such legitimizes its preservation as archaeological heritage, in the sense of public approval at large. The discussion is carried along the axis of property rights to decide whether or not a legitimacy crisis is being experienced in the Ephesos case. This is done by adopting Habermas' definition of crisis in accord with the idea of sustainability, as 'the phase of an illness in which it is decided whether or not the organism's self-healing powers are sufficient for recovery', to scrutinize the sustainability of preserving our archaeological heritage through tourism activities.

    Outage and Intercept Performance in THz LEO-Ground Communication With Satellite Selection

    Satellite communication and THz communication systems are some of the methods that aim to meet the demand of increasing data rates. With an importance growing alongside increasing data amounts, data security is on its way to a position that cannot be neglected when building systems. In this study, it has been shown that secure data transmission can be made possible through the use of THz frequencies in a link between LEO satellites and a ground station. Proposed scenarios data transmission performance have been analyzed. It has been shown that selection transmission have improved both data transmission and security performances.

    Teaching Accelerated Computing with Hands-On Experience

    Heterogeneous computing systems maintain high-performance executions with parallel hardware resources. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) with many parallel efficient cores and high-bandwidth memory structures enable accelerated computing for high-performance, deep learning, and embedded programs from diverse domains. The expertise in GPU programming requires a significant effort to utilize parallel computational units efficiently. Teaching programming for heterogeneous systems also becomes difficult due to dedicated hardware requirements and up-to-date course materials. In this paper, we present our teaching experience in an undergraduate parallel programming course, where we adopt NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute workshop and teaching kit contents and GPU devices at different scales to expose students to a set of hardware platforms with hands-on coding experience.

    Performance Evaluation of Filter-Based Gene Selection Methods in Cancer Classification

    With the advances in microarray technology, gene expression levels can be measured efficiently, and this data can be used to solve important problems such as cancer classification. However, microarray data suffers from the high-dimensionality problem and requires dimensionality reduction techniques such as feature selection. This study addresses the cancer classification problem using microarray datasets and comparatively evaluates the performance of different filter-based gene (feature) selection methods. To this end, 11 microarray datasets have been evaluated using 6 different filter methods, and experimental results are presented. According to the findings, the gene selection methods used can improve classification performance by 5% to 30%. Using 5-fold cross-validation, the highest accuracy rates were achieved with 32 genes selected by the gain ratio filter for the Breast and Colon datasets, and with 8 genes selected by the information gain filter for the CNS dataset.

    The Influence of The Bauhaus Approach on Industrial Ceramic Design

    The desire to move away from traditionalism caused by the intense discussions on art in the 19th and 20th centuries and to break traditional patterns that followed, initiated the search for new concepts, methods and techniques. In the Bauhaus School, the subjects of art and craft, form and meaning, aesthetics and function were reconsidered through different materials. Ceramics are also among the materials that gained a new meaning with Bauhaus. Before Bauhaus, ceramics, which were processed with detailed patterns and forms through handicraft and accepted as a traditional material, gained a modern and industrial identity in Bauhaus with standardized molds, forms suitable for function, far from processing and ornamentation. Bauhaus Ceramics Workshop has revealed approaches and methods that guide industrial ceramic design. The pots made by craftsmen have given way to minimal products designed with basic design principles and having a conceptual substructure. This innovation has formed the basis of the minimalism approach in today's industrial design. In line with the ideas and radical approach of the Bauhaus school, which started a new era for the field of design, this study aims to investigate the effects of the school on today's industrial ceramic product design, and many data found in the literature were used and content analysis was made on ceramic products made by Bauhaus artists. Bauhaus interpretations and reflections in industrial design were discussed. By presenting the Bauhaus references in ceramic product design, the study aims to contribute to the literature and offer a new perspective to researchers and designers in the field.

    Impact of Thermal Mass Oriented Measures Over CO2 Emissions of a Thermally Insulated Low-Rise Apartment Building in Izmir, Turkey

    Climate change has drawn the attention of many researchers and practitioners to focus on the methods to address the challenges in achieving low-carbon buildings and cities and in future developments. Nevertheless, few studies have explored the impacts of thermal mass applications for the lowest carbon emissions of building operational energy consumption. A comparative study of CO2 emissions due to different wall and floor compositions is presented in accordance with their lifespans for a hot-humid climate site. Aim of this study is to examine the relation between the energy oriented operations and carbon emissions of the building. Firstly, an existing low-rise building in Izmir is selected, then modelled in the dynamic simulation model software DesignBuilder v4 by synchronizing drawings with basic operational principles of the program. Furthermore, various influence factors of building envelope thermal characteristics are selected as follows: type, location, thickness and thermal specifications of materials used by keeping thermal conductivity value constant. At the end, the research presents remarkable influence of thermal mass oriented measures on reducing energy demands and carbon footprints.

    The Semantic Categories in Teaching "If Clauses" in ESL Classes

    For many second language learners, learning the target language is supposed to be identical with the mastery of the grammar of that language. When we say "the mastery of the grammar", we refer to the mastery of rules which revolve around the structure of the language. The problem arises at that point, actually. In this paper, this problem is going to be dwelled upon analysing a language item. As a matter of fact, this language item can be regarded as a symbol of the problem mentioned above. This language item is "if clauses". "If clauses" are not so easy to cope with since they require a mastery of some structure accompanied with an appropriate situation. The problem arises here, because a clear-cut distinction between the types and usage are not always possible. We ought not to forget that grammar is not the fundamental of the target language, which consists of the finely tuned structural prescriptions only. Language is meaningful as long as it is contextualized. We cannot take over the use of language if it is presented in isolated exercises having a meaningful context. Comprehensive exercises are essential to teach "if clauses". In conclusion, in this paper I intend to suggest a semantic classification of "if clauses" so as to avoid overgeneralization which is a result of the classification of "if clauses" structurally. Making this suggestion, I would like to support it with examples from the works of literature as well. If the classification of the language item in question is made semantically, the comprehension of the subject "if clauses" will be much better. (c) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.     Developing Examination Scheduling Automation System by Using Evolutionary Computing Technique

    In this study, manually (paperwork) and periodically prepared exam scheduling applications at universities have been taken into a computer automation system by developing a software solution. In the software developed by the authors, Evolutionary Algorithm method has been applied and university administration's specific improvement requests have also been taken into consideration while developing the software. The developed software has two parts: First part is about collecting data through the web application, and the second part is the application project, which calculates the final scheduling results. By utilizing the software, a considerable amount of time lost by manually preparing exam schedules will be saved. In addition, with the real-time connection to the student automation system database, numerous problems will be vanished, i.e. students/classes exam scheduling conflicts, etc. In the study, tables added to the current student automation system database have been explained. Additionally, by applying the genetic algorithm methods to the various parts of data have been examined along with the constraints used in the application, which are essential parts of the software. User interfaces have been designed with their sample instances. Finally, exam-scheduling table has been created and an example output of the schedule has been generated in the study.

    Vision Transformers-Based Deep Feature Generation Framework for Hydatid Cyst Classification in Computed Tomography Images

    Hydatid cysts, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, form progressively enlarging fluid-filled cysts in organs like the liver and lungs, posing significant public health risks through severe complications or death. This study presents a novel deep feature generation framework utilizing vision transformer models (ViT-DFG) to enhance the classification accuracy of hydatid cyst types. The proposed framework consists of four phases: image preprocessing, feature extraction using vision transformer models, feature selection through iterative neighborhood component analysis, and classification, where the performance of the ViT-DFG model was evaluated and compared across different classifiers such as k-nearest neighbor and multi-layer perceptron (MLP). Both methods were evaluated independently to assess classification performance from different approaches. The dataset, comprising five cyst types, was analyzed for both five-class and three-class classification by grouping the cyst types into active, transition, and inactive categories. Experimental results showed that the proposed VIT-DFG method achieves higher accuracy than existing methods. Specifically, the ViT-DFG framework attained an overall classification accuracy of 98.10% for the three-class and 95.12% for the five-class classifications using 5-fold cross-validation. Statistical analysis through one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), conducted to evaluate significant differences between models, confirmed significant differences between the proposed framework and individual vision transformer models (p<0.05\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$p < 0.05$$\end{document}). These results highlight the effectiveness of combining multiple vision transformer architectures with advanced feature selection techniques in improving classification performance. The findings underscore the ViT-DFG framework's potential to advance medical image analysis, particularly in hydatid cyst classification, while offering clinical promise through automated diagnostics and improved decision-making.
