    Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Plants Grown in the Mediterranean Region

    Background: The main objective of this research was to identify plant species with possible bioactivities based on their total phenol content, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Therefore, different parts of 42 plant species grown in the Mediterranean region were extracted with aqueous ethanol solutions to prepare extracts with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, mainly resulting from their total phenol contents. No detailed laboratory data on the flora of this area exists regarding their total phenol contents and total antioxidant activities. Results: Yields of extraction for each plant material were determined. Extracts were characterized based on their total phenol contents, total antioxidant (both hydrophilic and lipophilic), and antimicrobial activities using Folin–Ciocalteu, Photochemiluminescence, disc diffusion, and microdilution methods, respectively. The extract of Hypericum empetrifolium had the relatively highest total water-soluble and lipid-soluble antioxidant activities. Sarcopoterium spinosum extract had relatively high total phenol content. Preliminary screening study was conducted with the disc diffusion method to evaluate the extracts' antimicrobial activities. 26 out of 42 plant species showed significant antimicrobial activities against the growth of microorganisms. Microdilution assays were performed to evaluate the most active plant species with their minimum inhibition concentrations. H. empetrifolium, Pistacia terebinthus, Arbutus unedo, and Cistus parviflorus were the most antimicrobial plant species among those investigated. CONCLUSION: The new potential sources for the isolation of bioactive natural compounds from specific plant species could be possible with the help of this present screening study. Isolated bioactive natural compounds can be utilized as raw materials in cosmetics, nutraceuticals, food supplements, and pharmaceutical industries. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

    Association Mapping of Plant Structure and Yield Traits in Faba Bean (vicia Faba L.)

    Tens of thousands of faba bean accessions are available in germplasm collections throughout the world. Morphological characterization of these materials can enrich these collections and aid in the selection of genotypes for use in breeding programs. Results: In this study, 26 morphological characters were analyzed for 61 faba bean landraces and 53 cultivars over two seasons in Izmir, Turkey. The genotypes had high diversity for several yield traits including number of pods per plant, dry seed yield, and 100-seed weight. Association mapping was conducted for the morphological characters using 651 alleles from 100 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and a general linear model based on the Q matrix. A false discovery rate of 0.20 was used to test the significance of marker–trait associations resulting in 75 loci detected for 20 of the morphological characters (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Overall, 44% of the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were for seed traits, with 24%, 15%, and 17% of QTL identified for vegetative, inflorescence, and pod traits, respectively. The phenotypic data and marker–trait associations generated by this work can help breeding programs in the selection and improvement of faba bean. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

    Nonvisual Aspects of Spatial Knowledge: Wayfinding Behavior of Blind Persons in Lisbon

    Blind individuals' wayfinding performance in complex urban environments is a complex phenomenon. This study investigates the wayfinding strategies of congenitally blind individuals in an urban context. The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which the environmental auditory cues are of primary importance for their wayfinding strategies. The study was conducted in Lisbon, Portugal. Results suggest that auditory information was the most used environmental cue and that a feeling of enclosure is the most important environmental feature during wayfinding. These results corroborate previous findings suggesting that increased familiarity with the environment results in more efficient wayfinding strategies, and that lack of environmental auditory cues could be compensated by a robust cognitive map. The study highlights multidimensional sensory experiences of urban environments and nonvisual aspects of spatial perception.

    Towards Ensemble Asteroseismology of the Young Open Clusters Chi Persei and Ngc 6910

    As a result of the variability survey in chi Persei and NGC 6910, the number of beta Cep stars that are members of these two open clusters is increased to twenty stars, nine in NGC 6910 and eleven in chi Persei. We compare pulsational properties, in particular the frequency spectra, of beta Cep stars in both clusters and explain the differences in terms of the global parameters of the clusters. We also indicate that the more complicated pattern of the variability among B-type stars in chi Persei is very likely caused by higher rotational velocities of stars in this cluster. We conclude that the sample of pulsating stars in the two open clusters constitutes a very good starting point for the ensemble asteroseismology of beta Cep-type stars and maybe also for other B-type pulsators.     Transition-Metal Direct C-H Arylation of Thiophene in Aqueous Media Via Potassium Peroxymonosulfate

    This study covers the use of potassium peroxymonosulfate (PPS) which, is a mild and inexpensive catalyst, for direct coupling of C-H/C-H for water soluble thiophene. The 3-(4-methyl-3 '- thienyloxy)propyltriethylammonium bromide (M1) has been selected as model monomer that reacted PPS in 2.0, 0.20 and 0.020 monomer to PPS ratio. The reaction has been monitored via NMR spectroscopy revealing the monomer consumption and formation of dimers to tetramers as well as completion of reaction within 15 minutes. Resultant product is easily collected without tedious work up steps. The computational calculation has optimized the regularity of the coupling as head to tail, tail to tail, head to tail (HT-TT-HT) for tetramer. The regularity of tetramer which is further satisfied via NMR analysis showing emergence of new peaks at 3.56 and 4.48. The shifts in the UV maximum of reactive species have been monitored by absorbance spectroscopy showing time dependent red shift corresponds to growing from monomer to tetramers. The reaction has self-stopped due to low solubility of moderate condensates (higher than trimer), however further experiments have performed in water-organic mixtures showed great promises to obtain higher condensates.

    Compact Wideband Tapered-Fed Printed Bow-Tie Antenna With Rectangular Edge Extension

    In this article, a wideband printed bow-tie antenna is designed entire band of GPS (L5), PCS, IMT-2000, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WiMAX bands, and the most of frequency range of UWB. Apart from the traditional designs, the proposed antenna includes tapered printed line with a feeding point patch and triangular bows with rectangular edge extensions, which makes the antenna more compact. The antenna realized at the frequency band of 1.49-9.5 GHz (more than 6.3:1 ratio bandwidth) has the dimensions of 122mmx56mm (0.61(0)x0.28(0)). According to measurement results, the realized gain varies between almost 1 and 6.5 dBi with 4.44dBi average, which are in good agreement with simulation results. Radiation patterns at the lower frequencies of operating band show dipole like radiation pattern with higher cross-pol discrimination levels while they degrade at the higher frequencies due to increase in gain.

    Modification of Commercial Boron Carbide Powder Using Rapid Carbothermal Reduction

    Non-uniform morphology and existence of free carbon are two main problems for commercial boron carbide powders. This work proposes a method for eliminating free carbon and changing the morphology of commercial powders using Rapid Carbothermal Reduction (RCR) process. Free carbon is eliminated from commercial boron carbide powders and morphology is evolved to less angular shapes with limited particle size growth. Commercial and modified powders were densified by Spark Plasma Sintering at 1900 degrees C with 0, 5, and 20 minutes dwell. Despite the particle size growth, modified boron carbide powders reached >99% TD with shorter dwell times compared with commercial starting powders. Improved microhardness observed with dense modified samples as a result of enhanced morphology and increased twinning.

    Development of an Ionic Liquid Based Method for the Preparation of Albumin Nanoparticles

    Albumin based nanocarriers have been widely used in drug delivery studies. Here, we developed a water-in-ionic liquid (IL) emulsion-like method to prepare bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles as alternative to the traditional organic solvents containing techniques. Conformational changes of albumin induced by the imidazolium based ILs at the water-IL interface triggers the BSA nanoparticle formation. The albumin nanoparticle formation are dependent on the experimental parameters and the hydophobicity of the IL. At pH 9.0, using 1.3%wt of BSA in water/1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BmimBF4) (50/50 mol%) and TX-100/butanol surfactant mixture yields uniformly distributed 200 nm average sized BSA nanoparticles. Different than BmimBF4, using a more hydrophilic IL, EmimBF4 yielded albumin aggregates. Instead, using a more hydrophobic IL, HmimBF4 produced albumin nanoparticles but a non-uniform size distribution was obtained. These results indicate that the ionic liquids called green and designer solvents can be also used to synthesize albumin nanoparticles.

    A Review on Halide Perovskites as Color Conversion Layers in White Light Emitting Diode Applications

    In the last decade, halide perovskites have attracted great interest due to many reasons, including their low cost, solution-processability, superior PL properties, broad range of color tunability, color purity, and defect tolerance, among others. They are in increasing demand for a wide range of applications, such as solar cells, light emitting diodes (LEDs), white LEDs (WLED), and lasers. Yellow phosphors have been heavily employed in solid-state lighting, since its illumination by blue yields white light with various optical features, such as high/low CRI, CCT, and luminous efficiency. However, phosphors as pigments are seldom found and are costly material. In this sense, halide perovskites may offer a promising alternative to phosphors for future solid-state lighting. In this study, the synthesis and optical properties of halide perovskites, as well as their application in WLED as a conversion layer are investigated.

    Way-Finding Strategies of Blind Persons in Urban Scale

    The aim of this study was to determine whether urban environments with different prominent sensory inputs have an impact on the way-finding strategies of blind people and to identify these impacts, where applicable. We specifically investigated how blind people use their senses to compensate for the lack of visual information and how the priority of senses changes according to the urban context. The participants of the study consisted of nine congenitally blind individuals and the study took place in two urban settings: a dense urban district, Kemeralti district in İzmir; and an urban park, the İzmir Fair Park. During the learning phase, a first trial along the selected routes was conducted for each participant individually along with one of the researchers. In the test phase, the participants were requested to re-walk the route and verbally report the environmental cues they attended to. The participants’ verbal reports were recorded and transcripts of the recordings were coded according to the environmental sensory inputs. In addition, the short-term memory of each participant was also evaluated. The results show that the characteristics of the urban environment seem to have an impact on way-finding strategies of blind individuals. It was found that the sound of the city and the echo from the environment are the most important factors for blind participants in the dense urban environment. Environmental boundaries provided echoes and gave a sense of enclosure that helped them orient themselves, whereas, in the park environment, the sense of enclosure was not enhanced due to a lack of boundaries in the environment.
