Article A Survey On the Visibility Of Mosaic Heritage On The UNESCO World Heritage List(Bursa Uludağ University, 2025) Akture, Z.World Heritage Programme was launched under the auspices of UNESCO by adopting the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972. 1223 cultural, natural, and mixed properties have been inscribed on the World Heritage List (WHL) from 1978 to 2024 to ensure international consideration and assistance in their preservation as patrimony of humanity. This paper offers an insight into the visibility of mosaic heritage in this corpus through a survey of references to mosaics in the Statements of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) on the homepages of World Heritage properties at UNESCO’s website. After an introduction on the requirements for inscription on WHL, distribution of mosaics in World Heritage properties is surveyed in reference to their category, location on the globe, and setting within the property to highlight over- and under-representations, with inspiration from the current strategy of achieving a balanced representation of heritage types, chronologies-regions, and themes on WHL. Then selected “exceptions” in terms of mosaic types, locations, and periods are presented to contribute in increasing their visibility, followed by “highlights” in whose Statements of OUV the word “mosaic” is most repeated. Adopting the wholistic approach recommended in the World Heritage Programme, both sections aim to contextualise the selected examples in the overall corpus and mosaic heritage as an element forming and representing their attributes of OUV. After observing the thus exemplified variety in the mosaic heritage so far inscribed on WHL, concluding remarks highlight areas of further research to deepen the presented visibility analysis. © (2024), (). The results show that on clean Co(111), hydrogen sulfide dissociation proceeds fast due to low activation barriers, yielding atomic sulfur on the cobalt surfaces. Boron promotion hinders the dissociation of hydrogen sulfide due to increased activation barriers. Furthermore, boron prevents the interaction of sulfur compounds with cobalt surface atoms, as these poisons bind on boron. The findings indicate that boron is an effective promoter that can be used to design sulfur resistant cobalt catalysts. © 2024, Sakarya University. However, continuous organic and inorganic precursor load and disinfectant dosing make pool water chemistry much more complex than other disinfected waters. Carcinogenic bromate compound is one of the hundreds of disinfection by-products in pool water. The occurrence of bromate in pool waters depends on the precursor content of filling water, the disinfection process, operating parameters, and the purity of disinfectants. While the average filling water bromide concentrations of University Campus indoor swimming pool in Gülbahçe –Urla (SP1) and Buca public indoor swimming pool (SP2) were determined to be 182 μg/L and 11.0 μg/L, respectively, the average bromate concentrations of SP1 and SP2 were 59.4 μg/L and 68.3 μg/L. Estimated chronic-toxic health risks of accidental ingestion of pool water during swimming (between 10-3 and 10-1) were lower than the threshold level (‘1’). Although the carcinogenic risks in central tendency scenario (<10-6) indicate negligible risks for swimmers, worst case scenario indicates carcinogenic risks (medians were ranged from 1.61×10-6 to 9.42×10-6) for highly exposed specific swimmer groups. Bromate accumulation in swimming pools needs attention for mitigating the health risks for swimmers. © 2021, Yıldız Technical University.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Meteorological Drought Analysis for Helmand River Basin, Afghanistan(TMMOB İnşaat Mühendisleri Odası, 2022) Alami, Mohammad Musa; Tayfur, GökmenThis study evaluates drought at Lashkargah, Farah, Adraskan, and Gardandiwal stations in Helmand River Basin (HRB) in Afghanistan to determine appropriate drought indices for the basin. Thirty seven years of monthly recorded precipitation data from 1979 to 2015 are employed with different drought index (DI) methods which include the Standardized Precipitation Index (Normal-SPI, Log-SPI, and Gamma-SPI), the Percent of Normal (PN), and the Deciles. All the methods are applied to the annual long term precipitation data. The log-SPI and the gamma-SPI predict extreme drought conditions, whereas, the normal-SPI determines wet and less dry conditions. The results emphasize that the PN and the Deciles methods predict more drought years in comparison to the SPI methods. The Deciles method shows longer period of extreme and severe drought than other methods. The five methods indicate various drought intensities in 1985, 1987, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 at all the stations. The extreme drought condition in 2001 at all the stations confirms to the recorded drought reports for the same region. It is noted that since the log-SPI and the gamma-SPI capture the historical extreme and severe drought periods successfully, these are recommended as the drought monitoring indices for Helmand River Basin. Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 3Rotary Inertia and Higher Modes Effect on the Dynamic Response of Timoshenko Beams on Two-Parameter Elastic Foundation(Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers, 2019) Hızal, Çağlayan; Çatal, Hikmet HüseyinThis study investigates the effects of rotary inertia and higher modes on the dynamic response of the axially loaded Timoshenko beams on two-parameter foundation with generalized elastic end conditions. A simplified modal analysis procedure is presented by using the conventional separation of variables method. The effect of rotary inertia on the solution of free vibration differential equation is discussed. A numerical example is presented to investigate the coupled effect of rotary inertia and higher modes on the bending moment and shear force responses.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Regional Inequality and International Trade in Turkey: a Dynamic Spatial Panel Approach(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2017) Duran, Hasan Engin; Erdem, UmutAim of the present article1 is to investigate the impact of trade liberalization on the evolution of regional income inequalities in Turkey between 2004-2011. Despite the large body of literature on this subject, there exists several directions which needs to be further explored. i. so far in the literature, the concept of trade openness is too broadly defined. However, it is not only ‘trade’ per se that can affect the regional economies but the composition of trade is also of great importance (Rodriquez-Pose and Gill, 2006). Indeed, it can be partitioned into two components, such as exports and imports. We analyze separately the impact of each component on the evolution of regional inequalities. ii. in most of the empirical studies dealing with this issue, neighboring regions are assumed to have no spatial economic interconnection between each other. We, therefore, incorporate spatial spillovers of trade and growth into our analysis. Our results are summarized in two groups: First, regional inequalities in Turkey are quite sizable but tend to decline over the period of analyses. Second, initially poorer regions that experience an export-based liberalization tend to grow faster than richer ones. Imports, on the other hand, have an opposite effect. © 2017, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. Especially after the enactment of the law of urban regeneration for risky areas, regeneration of areas under disaster risk, there has been an acceleration in knocking down old buildings and constructing new ones in inner cities. Thus, this paper focuses on the changes in housing typologies in Hatay-Izmir, in terms of space syntax parameters through the time period 1960-2000, and interprets the final plan-solutions within the perspective of urban regeneration. By accelerating implementations of the urban transformation projects in Hatay region, alternative plan-typologies coming from the past have undergone the so-called “re-design and transformation” process; however, they have actually been substituted by the “never-changing” plan-templates of the apartment typology. We will examine these changes in plan typologies and spatial organisations of the mentioned apartment-projects on the same plots by utilizing the method of space syntax and visibility analysis (VGA). Transformations in spatial configuration in two periods are interpreted through their relationships to shifts in meaning of privacy and daily life represented by degree of permeability and connectivity of housing-unit-plans based on spatial analysis. © 2018, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture.
