Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Influence of Dispersing Agents on the Solubility of Perovskites in Water(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2009) Şakar-Deliormanlı, Aylin; Çelik, Erdal; Polat, MehmetIn this study, solubility behavior of lead magnesium niobate (PMN) powders in water was investigated in the presence of pure polyacrylic acid and polyacrylic acid/polyethylene oxide comb polymers. Experiments were performed by measuring the solubility of PMN in terms of the concentration of Pb+2 and Mg+2 ions in supernatant as a function of pH and dispersing agent dosage. The concentrations of the metal ions in supernatant were found to be affected by the dispersant concentration, stirring time and the suspension pH. Results revealed that both dispersing agents enhance the cation dissolution from PMN surface at pH 9 due to weak (reversible) adsorption and complexation of Pb+2 and Mg+2 by carboxylate groups. On the other hand, under acidic conditions cation dissolution from PMN is inhibited and this was attributed to the strong adsorption of dispersing agents onto the powder surface and formation of a dense polymer layer.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 19Development of Synergistic Heat Stabilizers for Pvc From Zinc Borate-Zinc Phosphate(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2009) Erdoğdu, Cem Aykut; Atakul, Sevdiye; Balköse, Devrim; Ülkü, SemraThe importance of flame-retardant and smoke-suppressed poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compositions is increasing gradually in the polymer industry since PVC releases smoke and toxic gases (hydrogen chloride, HCl) during heating at temperatures above 140°C with the result of dehydrochlorination reaction. In this study, the synergistic effects of zinc borate (ZB)-zinc phosphate (ZP) on the thermal stability of PVC were investigated using thermal techniques. The induction and stability time values of PVC plastigels were obtained at 140°C and 160°C. The results revealed that PVC plastigels having only ZP and ZB retarded dehydrochlorination of PVC compared with the unstabilized sample. However, the plastigels with both ZB and ZP had a superior synergistic effect on char formation of PVC. Since the induction periods of the samples having both ZB and ZP were higher than those of the unstabilized samples having only ZB or only ZP, the synergistic effect was observed.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 10Multi-Zone Drying Schemes for Lowering the Residual Solvent Content During Multi-Component Drying of Semicrystalline Polymers(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2007) Wong, Sim-Siong; Alsoy Altınkaya, Sacide; Mallapragada, Surya K.The development of a glassy skin in multicomponent semicrystalline polymer systems limits the diffusion of solvents out of the system and increases residual solvent levels. Based on the results of a mathematical model that we had previously developed, we have proposed a multi-zone drying scheme aimed at lowering the residual solvent levels by taking into account the effect of interactions between the various solvents as predicted by the model. This article focuses on the application of this model to develop optimal drying schemes and to verify the effectiveness of these predictions using experimental techniques. The mathematical model developed previously to study the diffusion of multiple solvents and changes in the crystallinity of semicrystalline polymer systems during drying incorporates many features including Vrentas-Duda diffusion theory, solvent-induced crystallization kinetics, as well as glass transition effects and skinning of the film. The multi-zone drying system was developed by varying the drying temperature in each zone as well as changing the partial pressure of individual solvents during the drying process. The effectiveness of the multi-zone drying schemes predicted by the model was validated experimentally using thermogravimetric methods. The polymer-solvent system chosen was a poly(vinyl alcohol)-water-methanol system. Our experimental data suggested that the multi-zone drying schemes were superior to a single-zone drying system through direct comparison. Further examination of the mathematical model yielded individual solvent profiles and these data reaffirmed our conclusions that a multi-zone drying scheme has the ability to reduce the effect of solvent trapping and thus lower the overall residual solvent content.Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 27Isomerization of Alpha-Pinene Over Acid Treated Natural Zeolite(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2005) Ünveren, Ercan; Günüz, Gönül; Çakıcıoğlu Özkan, FehimeIn this study, isomerization of α-pinene was studied over several acid-treated natural zeolite catalysts rich in clinoptilolite. Zeolite samples were contacted with HCl at different concentrations at 30°'C or at 60°C for 3 and 24 hours and tested in isomerization reaction of alpha-pinene. The catalysts prepared were characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption, and acidity studies. Acidity strength and the distribution of Lewis and Brönsted acid sites of the catalysts were determined, and their catalytic activities in α-pinene isomerization and selectivities to main reaction products, camphene and limonene, were investigated. Acid treatment improved the selectivity of catalyst samples to camphene, decreasing the selectivity to limonene, probably forcing limonene to secondary reactions at high conversions. The kinetics of α-pinene consumption was described by first-order kinetics. Two kinetic models were tested for the reaction mechanism and one model was found to give a good correlation between the theoretical and experimental data. In the models, the key intermediate was the pinylcarbonium ion, which was formed irreversibly from α-pinene. Number and distribution of Lewis and Brönsted acid sites affect the formation of bicyclic and monocyclic products.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4A Chromatographic Study of Carbon Monoxide Adsorption on a Clinoptilolite-Containing Natural Zeolitic Material(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2004) Narin, Güler; Yılmaz, Selahattin; Ülkü, SemraIn this study, the equilibrium and kinetic parameters for CO adsorption on clinoptilolite-rich natural zeolitic material were determined by the concentration pulse chromatography technique. Experiments were carried out at different column temperatures (60-120°C) and interstitial carrier gas velocities (3.1-16.3 cm/s) using a clinoptilolite-rich natural zeolitic material packed column. The equilibrium and kinetic parameters were determined by matching the moments of the experimentally obtained response curves to the parameters in the mathematical model. The Henry's Law constants were found to decrease from 700 to 49 with increasing temperature. The heat of adsorption at low coverage was found to be 50.73 kJ/molK. The contributions from external film, macropore, and micropore diffusion resistances to mass transfer were determined, and the micropore diffusion resistance was found to be the major contributor. The micropore diffusivity as a function of crystal radius (Dc/rc 2) was determined and found to change between 5.72 × 10-4 and 1.34 × 10-2 s-1 in the temperature range studied.Article Citation - WoS: 87Citation - Scopus: 110Effects of Oxygenate Additives on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (pahs) and Soot Formation(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2002) İnal, Fikret; Senkan, Selim M.Effects of three oxygenate additives (methanol, ethanol, and MTBE) on the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot in laminar, premixed, atmospheric pressure, fuel-rich flames of n-heptane were studied at an equivalence ratio of 2.10. A heated quartz microprobe coupled to online gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to establish the identities and absolute concentrations of major, minor, and trace species by the direct analysis of samples withdrawn from the flames. Benzene was the most abundant aromatic compound identified. The largest PAH detected was the family of C18H10 (molecular weight of 226) that includes cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene. Soot particle diameters, number densities, and volume fractions were determined using classical light scattering and extinction measurements. All the oxygenate additives studied reduced the mole fractions of aromatic and PAH species, as well as soot formation. However, the reduction in soot formation was comparable for different oxygenates under the experimental conditions investigated.Article Citation - WoS: 39Citation - Scopus: 48The Indoor Environmental Index and Its Relationship With Symptoms of Office Building Occupants(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2004) Moschandreas, Demetrios J.; Sofuoğlu, Sait CemilAn index for indoor environmental quality, the Indoor Environmental Index (IEI), was developed. This study aggregates the Indoor Air Pollution Index, an index found in the literature, and a new index: the Indoor Discomfort Index. The average of these two indices is the IEI, which is calculated using concentrations of eight pollutants and two comfort variables measured in 100 office buildings in the United States. The database used was developed for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Building Assessment Survey Evaluation study. A symptom index also is developed to denote persistent occupant symptoms. The IEI and the symptom index are used to investigate the relationship between indoor environmental quality and symptoms. Two simple linear regression models were formulated; these models explain 67 and 79% of the variation in the average symptom index, with the variation of the average IEI depending on the method of averaging used in the construction of the models. In addition, a conceptual explanation is provided for the empirical or regression models formulated. Adsoption of methylene blue on each raw material and on composites was studied both from an equilibrium and a rate approach. It was observed that the adsorption capacity of zeolite decreased when it was embedded in composites. The equilibrium uptake of methylene blue increased with an increasing zeolite fraction in composites. Methylene blue was adsorbed from a 0.02 g·cm-3 aqueous solution slowly, but was nearly adsorbed completely with a composite having a 0.3 volume fraction of zeolite. The effective diffusion coefficient of methylene blue in composites was of the order of 10-13 m2·s-1 and decreased with increasing filler fraction.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Use of Clinoptilolite in Ethanol Dehydration(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 1996) Tıhmınlıoğlu, Funda; Ülkü, SemraClinoptilolite-type natural zeolite, which exists in various regions of Turkey, has been experimentally studied. For the ethanol-water-local clinoptilolite system, uptake and breakthrough curves were determined under a nitrogen gas atmosphere. In adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibrium studies, the effects of particle size, temperature and, amount of zeolite on the uptake rate have been investigated. The breakthrough curves for four different flow rates of ethanol and three different bed heights were determined in dynamic column studies. The results of the experiments show that intraparticle diffusion is the main resistance. The local clinoptilolite is a promising adsorbent for water adsorption from aqueous ethanol.Article Citation - WoS: 20Dry Deposition Fluxes and Atmospheric Size Distributions of Mass, Al, and Mg Measured in Southern Lake Michigan During Aeolos(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 1998) Sofuoğlu, Sait Cemil; Paode, Rajendra D.; Sivadechathep, Jakkris; Noll, Kenneth E.; Holsen, Thomas M.; Keeler, Gerald J.In this study, which was a part of the Atmospheric Exchange Over Lakes and Oceans Study (AEOLOS) investigation, the dry deposition fluxes and atmospheric size distributions (ASDs) of mass and crustal metals (aluminum and magnesium) were measured over the southern basin of Lake Michigan (in Chicago, over Lake Michigan, and in South Haven, Michigan). Airborne crustal metals arise primarily from fugitive dust emissions and are associated with the coarse fraction of atmospheric aerosol. Consequently, they can serve as fingerprints for the atmospheric behavior of fugitive dust. The flux of these metals were substantially higher in Chicago than in either South Haven or over Lake Michigan. The measured average mass, aluminum, and magnesium fluxes were 138, 2.23, and 5.32 mg/m2-day in Chicago, 47.8, 0.24, and 0.28 mg/m2-day over Lake Michigan, and 37.4, 0.17, and 0.12 mg/m2-day in South Haven, respectively. The ASDs of crustal metals measured in Chicago had higher concentrations of coarse particles than ASDs measured over Lake Michigan and in South Haven. The calculated flux of metals using a multistep model and dry deposition velocities obtained from the Sehmel-Hodgson model were in general agreement with measured fluxes of crustal metals. Particles >10 μm were found to be responsible for the majority of the flux.
