Effective Synthesis of Cetyl Palmitate Over Co-Precipitated Wo3-Zro2 Catalysts
(Springer Verlag, 2018) Mutlu, Vahide N.; Yılmaz, Selahattin
This study is focused on the development of solid acid catalysts for the synthesis of long chain fatty acids. A series of WO3-ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and tested in the synthesis of cetyl palmitate. The effect of WO3 loading (10, 15, and 20 wt% WO3) and calcination temperature (700 and 800 degrees C) on the catalyst properties and activity was investigated. XRD and Raman analysis confirmed that WO3 loading stabilized the tetragonal zirconia phase. Higher calcination temperature enhanced the acidities of the catalysts. WO3-ZrO2 catalysts were found to be very efficient for the synthesis of cetyl palmitate with high selectivity. These catalysts were tested for different reaction temperatures (135 and 162 degrees C), feed composition and catalyst amounts. The highest cetyl palmitate yield (98.4%) was obtained over the catalyst calcined at 800 degrees C with 15 wt% WO3, which had the highest total acidity. The catalysts preserved their activities up to three reuse.

Remarkable Effects of Deep Eutectic Solvents on the Esterification of Lactic Acid With Ethanol Over Amberlyst-15
(Springer, 2020) Ünlü, Ayşe Ezgi; Arıkaya, Azime; Altundağ, Aybike; Takaç, Serpil
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are widely used in numerous reactions both as a solvent and a catalyst. In this study, different types of DESs were investigated as a supplementary component for Amberlyst-15 to enhance its catalytic activity in the esterification reaction of lactic acid with ethanol. The effects of the following parameters such as DES type, choline chloride : glycerol (ChCl-Gly) (1 : 2) amount, molar ratio of reactants, temperature and agitation rate on the initial rate of reaction and yield of ethyl lactate were investigated. According to the results, DESs alone did not have any catalytic effect on the esterification; however, DESs together with Amberlyst-15 provided a significant increase in the initial rate of reaction and yield. The activation energy of the reaction decreased significantly with the combined use of Amberlyst-15 and ChCl-Gly (1 : 2). Internal and external mass transfer limitations were found to be negligible under optimum reaction conditions.

Esterification of Cetyl Alcohol With Palmitic Acid Over Wo3/Zr-sba-15 and Zr-Sba Catalysts
(Elsevier Ltd., 2016) Mutlu, Nahide Nuran; Yılmaz, Selahattin
Tungsten loaded and Zr incorporated SBA-15 catalysts (WO3/Zr-SBA-15 and Zr-SBA-15) were developed for esterification of cetyl alcohol and palmitic acid. The influence of the Zr content, tungsten loading amount, calcination temperature, feed composition and catalyst amount has been studied. Higher tungsten loading decreased the acidity due to formation of WO3 crystals whereas calcination temperature enhanced the acidity by favoring the dispersion of WOx species. Activities of the catalyst changed depending on their amount of Brønsted sites and total number of acid sites. Zr-SBA-15 catalyst which had the highest amount of Brønsted acid sites gave maximum cetyl palmitate yield (63.1%). This catalyst retained its activity up to 3 reuse cycles without significant loss of activity.
