The former application is carried out under dynamic condition using ultrafiltration membrane either in tubular form or in flat sheet, while the latter is used in static condition. In this study, the performance of chemically immobilized urease on poly(acrylonitrile-co-sodium methallyl sulfonate) ultrafiltration membrane was determined under both static and dynamic conditions. Results reveal that the immobilization enhanced the thermal and storage stabilities of urease. The hydraulic permeability of urea solution was not influenced by the addition of enzyme layer. The maximum reaction rate measured under pressure in the ultrafiltration unit was found higher compared to the rate observed just under mixing without any pressure applied. The highest urea conversion was found at the lowest transmembrane pressure and the urea concentration in the feed solution. The catalytic activity of the membrane was completely preserved at the end of 450 min of filtration.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 8Measurement of Ternary Polymer/Solvent Equilibrium Data by Vapor-Phase Infrared Spectroscopy(Elsevier Ltd., 2009) Yürekli, Yılmaz; Alsoy Altınkaya, SacideVapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data for binary toluene/PVAC, methanol/PVAC and ternary toluene/methanol/PVAC systems have been measured at 100 °C by using vapor-phase infrared spectroscopy. Binary data have been compared with literature data measured by different experimental techniques and agreement between our measurements and others was found to be good. The ternary VLE data indicate that the solubility of methanol in PVAC is not influenced by the presence of toluene, while the solubility of toluene is lowered due to presence of methanol. To predict ternary VLE data, the Entropic free volume and Kannan free volume models and the Flory-Huggins theory were used. The predictive abilities of Flory-Huggins theory and the Kannan free volume model are similar and better than that of the Entropic free volume model.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 13The Influence of Binder Content on the Water Transport Properties of Waterborne Acrylic Paints(Elsevier Ltd., 2010) Alsoy Altınkaya, Sacide; Topçuoğlu, Özge; Yürekli, Yılmaz; Balköse, DevrimDiffusion coefficients and sorption isotherms of water in waterborne acrylic paint films and in the pure binder of the paints have been measured by gravimetric sorption. Solubility of water was found to enhance with the increased binder content in the paint films while the diffusivity of water decreased significantly. Sorption isotherms in the paint and pure copolymer films were correlated with the Flory Huggins theory and ENSIC model, respectively. Fickian diffusion was observed in both types of films and the kinetic data were best correlated with a numerical model which takes into account the concentration dependency of the diffusion coefficient and the dimensional change of the film due to sorption. In this paper, the immobilization of trypsin (TRY) and urease (URE) on polyacrylonitrile based membranes using the LbL assembly technique was presented. The studied systems consisted in bilayered assemblies with the enzyme layer as the outer layer and trilayered assemblies with the enzyme layer as the inner sandwiched layer. The membrane pore size was chosen so that the smaller enzyme TRY was mainly immobilized within the membrane and confined in the porous membrane structure while URE immobilization mainly took place at the membrane surface. No dramatic difference on reactivity was evidenced between these two enzyme locations. The catalytic activity of immobilized enzymes was found to be lower than the free ones in solution but their stability was dramatically enhanced. The higher activity was observed when the enzyme is deposited as the outer layer of the LbL assembly. On the other hand, the more stable catalytic membranes were obtained when the outer layer consists of a polyelectrolyte covering the enzyme layer. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Solubility and Diffusivity of Methylmethacrylate and Butylacrylate Monomers in a Mma-Ba Copolymer(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2007) Yürekli, Yılmaz; Alsoy Altınkaya, Sacide; Zielinski, John M.Mutual diffusion coefficients and sorption isotherms of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) monomers in methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate copolymer (MMA-BA) have been measured by gravimetric sorption. MMA is found to have higher solubility and diffusion rates in the copolymer than BA. Sorption data for MMA were interpreted using classical Flory-Huggins thermodynamic theory with a constant interaction parameter (χ). A modified version of this theory has been applied to correlate the sorption data of BA, which exhibit a temperature and concentration-dependent χ parameter. For MMA, the isotherm data reveal enhanced polymer-solvent interactions with increasing temperature, while for BA the data indicate a drive toward phase separation with increasing temperature. Despite the difference in thermodynamic behavior, both monomers are found to exhibit Fickian diffusion and the diffusivity data are correlated reasonably well with the Vrentas-Duda free volume theory. Some deviation between the free-volume correlation and the experimental data is observed at the lowest temperature and BA concentration examined.
