Article An Empirical Study of Sequential Offer Bargaining During the Festival of Sacrifice(Elsevier, 2024) Dindaroğlu, Burak; Ertaç, SedaWe report results from a unique data set of real -life bargaining transactions collected from the market for livestock (sheep) before the Festival of Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) in Izmir, Turkey. This market is characterized by frequent and aggressive bargaining, which occurs in the form of sequential price offers. We record bargaining transactions as they occur, and collect detailed information on the bargaining environment, as well as on the characteristics of buyers and sellers. We also elicit each seller's outside option by means of an incentive compatible mechanism and obtain a reported maximum willingness to pay from buyers. We particularly focus on aspects of the bargaining process, such as non -price communication. In different types of empirical analysis, results robustly indicate that the presence and content of communication matters, for the likelihood of a sale as well as concessions made. Specifically, buyer -side communication is associated with larger concessions from the seller and a higher probability of sale. The presence of a mediator during the negotiation is associated with a higher probability of sale as well, while it has no effect on prices. We also provide results on the relative importance of groups of variables for predicting bargaining outcomes, which can provide directions for further research in bargaining.Article Citation - WoS: 1Network Analysis of Innovation Mentor Community of Practice(Emerald Group Publishing, 2023) Altınışık, Günda Esra; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Perdahçı, Ziya Nazım; Pasin, MerihPurposePositive effect of knowledge sharing (KS) on innovation has come to the fore and government-supported innovation and mentoring communities or mentor networks have become widespread. This article aims to examine the community connectedness and mentors' preferences for professional competency-based KS of such innovation community of practice networks (CoPNs).Design/methodology/approachThe paper constructs a directed weighted CoPN model with a node-attribute-based novel fingerprint edge weights. Based on the CoPN, Social Network Analysis (SNA) metrics and measures including Giant Component (GC) were proposed and analyzed to identify mentors' connectedness preferences. The fingerprint was proposed as a novel binarized node attribute of competence. Jaccard similarity of fingerprints was proposed as edge weights to reveal correlations between competences and preferences for KS.FindingsThe work opted to conduct a survey of 28 innovation mentors to measure a CoPN. Both a name generator question and a second set of questions were employed to invite respondents to name their collaborators and indicate their professional competence. SNA metrics result in differing values for GC and the rest, which lead us to focus on GC to reveal salient metrics of connectedness. Jaccard similarity analysis results on GC demonstrate that mentors collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner.Originality/valueBased on the CoPN, the methods proposed may be effective in predicting preferred relationships for interdisciplinary collaborations, providing the managers with an analytical decision support tool for KS in practice.Article Interpersonal Trust, Invention, and Innovation Across European Regions(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2023) Dindaroğlu, BurakMany studies in economics and regional science claim a positive link between interpersonal trust and innovation by demonstrating a positive effect of trust on patenting. This contrasts many findings from organization level studies on trust and innovation, who report a variety of findings including inverted-U type relations. A possible explanation is that trust exhibits different roles in invention and innovation, as the former relies on knowledge commons while the latter directly embeds commercialization and the market context. This study attempts to reconcile the two set of findings by studying indicators of invention and innovation in relation to trust at the same unit of observation, by using the regional variation in Europe. I study the relationship between interpersonal trust and patent applications (a measure of invention), trademark applications (a composite indicator) and the share of innovative sales in turnover by SMEs (a direct indicator of commercialization), across European regions. I show that trust positively affects trademark applications with an effect that is comparable to that on patent applications. However, trust exhibits an inverted-U type relationship with innovative sales. Results collectively point to a strong role of trust in all three creative activities, including a negative effect at the higher end when the indicator is directly contingent on commercialization and sales. I also estimate the extent of spatial spillovers in the effect of trust on all three creative outcomes. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Regional Inflation Persistence in Turkey(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2021) Duran, Hasan Engin; Dindaroğlu, BurakThe purpose of the current study is to investigate the degree of inflation persistence, its geographical variation, sources of cross-regional variation, and presence of geographical/sectoral aggregation bias in national monetary policy. Our data set covers 26 NUTS-2 level Turkish regions and monthly CPI inflation over the period 2003-2019. We first estimate the degree of regional inflation persistence by autoregressive regressions, check its robustness against the presence of structural breaks (by Bai-Perron's algorithm) and nonlinearities (by Markovian Regime Switching regressions). Second, we examine the possibility of geographical and sectoral aggregation bias. Third, we investigate the cross-regional determinants of inflation persistence by panel data analysis, employing hybrid-effects spatial panel regressions. We analyze the direct and indirect effects of the determinants and test for regional spillover effects. Three main results are obtained. First, estimated persistence degrees are heterogeneous across regions. The geographical pattern is empirically robust against structural breaks and nonlinearities. We find that inflation persistence is distributed in a spatially correlated manner. Second, when sectoral and regional aggregation bias is tested, only sectoral aggregation indicates a considerable level of bias. Third, we find that the presence of large firms in the region and a higher share of agricultural output in GDP leads to lower persistence, while an increased share of industrial output, and increased trade volume leads to higher inflation persistence. Moreover, we find spatial spillovers of price variability evident in regression analysis. From a policy standpoint, it is required that structural policy programs are targeted to maintain flexibility in the regions where persistence is high (i.e., providing market entry/exit, institutional quality, policy credibility, stimulation of SMEs). Moreover, sectors that have high persistence, such as Hotels and Restaurants (persistence degree 0.55) and Health Services (0.39) should be weighted more in CPI calculations.Article Citation - WoS: 3Fragmentation of J/Psi in jets in pp collisions at root S=5.02 TeV batoul diab for the CMS collaboration(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationThe fragmentation of jets containing a J/psi meson is studied in root s = 5.02 TeV pp data using an integrated luminosity of L = 27.39 pb(-1). The fraction of the jet transverse momentum p(Tjet) carried by the J/psi is measured for prompt J/psi and J/psi coming from b hadron decays, named nonprompt. Whereas the fragmentation function of nonprompt J/psi is well-modeled by simulations using a Monte Carlo generator, the prompt J/psi are found to be accompanied by a larger level of jet activity. The fraction of J/psi mesons that are produced inside a jet is also reported, and found to be larger in data than in simulation, for both prompt and nonprompt J/psi.Article Citation - WoS: 9Evidence for Light-By Scattering in Ultraperipheral Pbpb Collisions at Root S-Nn=5.02 Tev(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationEvidence for light-by-light (LbL) scattering, gamma gamma -> gamma gamma, in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is reported. LbL scattering processes are selected in events with just two photons produced, with transverse energy E-T(gamma) > 2 GeV, pseudorapidity vertical bar eta(gamma)vertical bar < 2.4; and diphoton invariant mass m(gamma gamma) > 5 GeV, transverse momentum p(T)(gamma gamma) < 1 GeV, and acoplanarity (1 - Delta phi(gamma gamma)/pi) < 0.01. After all selection criteria, 14 events are observed, compared to 11.1 +/- 1.1 (theo) and 3.8 +/- 1.3 (stat) events expected for signal and background processes respectively. The significance of the signal excess over the background-only hypothesis is 4.10 sigma. The measured fiducial LbL scattering cross section, sigma(fid)(gamma gamma -> gamma gamma) = 122 +/- 46 (stat) +/- 29 (syst) +/- 4 (theo) nb is consistent with the standard model prediction.Article Beyond Npdfs Effects : Prompt J/Psi and Psi(2s) Production in Ppb and Pp Collisions(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, GülerA multi-dimensional analysis of prompt charmonia in pp and pPb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector is presented. The pPb differential cross-sections of prompt J/psi are shown in a wide kinematic region, for transverse momentum p(T) spanning from 2 to 30 GeV/c and a rapidity interval between -2.4 to 1.93 in the center of mass of the collision. The final results on prompt psi/(2S) meson production cross section in pp and pPb collisions at 5.02 TeV are also reported as a function of p(T) and rapidity, for p(T) from 4 to 30 GeV/c. The nuclear modification factor is found to be smaller than that of prompt J/psi in all measured bins, especially at low p(T) and at backward rapidity. Such a different behaviour between the ground and excited states cannot be reproduced considering nPDF effects alone.Article Measurement of Anisotropic Flow in Xexe Collisions at 5.44 Tev With the Cms Experiment(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationNew measurements of anisotropic flow in XeXe collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.44 TeV per nucleon pair, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, are presented. The v(2), v(3) and v(4) Fourier coefficients of the anisotropic azimuthal distribution are obtained employing three different analysis techniques: two-particle correlations, the scalar product method, and multiparticle cumulants, which have different sensitivities to non-flow and flow fluctuation effects. The results are shown as a function of transverse momentum (P-T) for various centrality selections, and compared with corresponding results from PbPb collisions. These new measurements in a smaller nucleus-nucleus system than PbPb provide additional insights into the system-size dependence of the collective flow induced by the dominant collision geometry and its fluctuations. In particular, these results, compared to theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo generators, will provide important details on the system size dependence of the medium response in heavy ion collisions. They also offer a unique opportunity to study the onset of flow from small to large systems.Article Multiparticle Correlations and Higher Order Harmonics in Ppb Collisions at Root S(nn)=8.16 Tev(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationThe elliptic and higher-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics (v(n)) are obtained for pPb collisions at root s(NN) = 8.16 TeV over a wide range of event multiplicities based on multiparticle correlations. The data were collected by the CMS experiment during the 2016 LHC run. A sample of peripheral PbPb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV covering a similar range of event multiplicities to the pPb results is also analyzed for comparison. The ratios of different harmonic moments are obtained for both v(2) and v(3) with high precision, which allows a direct comparison to theoretical predictions assuming a hydrodynamic evolution of the created medium with initial-state density fluctuations, particularly probing the non-Gaussian nature of initial-state fluctuations in small collision systems. The presented results provide crucial insights into the origin of collective long-range correlations observed in small collision systems.Article Citation - WoS: 1D-0 R-Aa in Pbpb Collisions at Root S(nn)=5.02 Tev and Elliptic Flow in Ppb Collisions at Root S(nn)=8.16 Tev With Cms(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) Karapınar, Güler; CMS CollaborationThe study of charm production in heavy-ion collisions is considered an excellent probe for the properties of the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Measurements of D-0-meson nuclear modification factor can provide strong constraints into the mechanisms of in-medium energy loss and charm flow in the medium. The measurement of D-0-meson elliptic flow in pPb collisions helps us understand the strength of charm quarks coupling to significantly reduced systems which demonstrate hydrodynamic properties. In this paper, the measurements of the D-0-meson nuclear modification factor in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV together with the new measurement of D-0-meson elliptic flow in high multiplicity pPb collisions at 5.02 TeV using the two-particle correlation method will be presented.
