    An inquiry into the role of metacognition in design learning and creativity

    Bu çalışmada, tasarım öğrenimi ve yaratıcılık süreçlerinde üstbilişin rolü kapsamlı bir şekilde incelenmekte ve bu faktörlerin etkileri araştırılmaktadır. Belirsizliklerle dolu ve yaratıcı problem çözme gereksinimleri olan tasarım eğitimi, öğrenciler için etkili öğrenme stratejileri geliştirmede zorluk çekebilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, üstbilişsel stratejilerin tasarım eğitimine entegre edilmesi önemli bir gerekliliktir. Çalışmada mimarlık lisans öğrencilerinin üstbilişsel farkındalık düzeylerinin tasarım öğrenmesindeki rolü iki farklı karma yöntemle değerlendirilmiştir. İlk olarak, minimal üstbilişsel müdahalelerin başarıya etkisi açıklayıcı sıralı desen kullanılarak analiz edilmiş ve farkındalık düzeyi düşük öğrencilerin müdahalelerden yararlandığı görülmüştür. İkinci olarak keşfedici sıralı desende, yapılandırılmış müdahalelerin akademik başarı, yaratıcılık ve motivasyona etkileri incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar, tüm öğrencilerin üstbilişsel farkındalık düzeylerinde artış olduğunu, farkındalık düzeyi yüksek öğrencilerin ise başarı ve yaratıcılıkta daha yüksek performans gösterdiğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca araştırma kapsamında, tasarım sürecinde üstbilişsel eylemleri sistematik bir şekilde yapılandırarak öğrenme süreçlerine katkıda bulunmayı amaçlayan 'Üçlü Yansıtıcı Model' geliştirilmiştir. Bu model, öğrencilerin düşünce süreçlerini planlamalarına, izlemelerine, organize etmelerine ve gerektiğinde yeniden yapılandırmalarına yardımcı olarak tasarım öğrenme süreçlerine daha bilinçli bir katılım sergilemelerini sağlar. Bulgular, öğrencilerin problem çözme becerileri, yaratıcılık kapasiteleri ve akademik hedef yönelimleri üzerinde olumlu etkiler göstermektedir. Öğrencilere yaratıcı problem çözme ve üstbilişsel farkındalık kazandırmak için tasarım eğitimi politikalarının gözden geçirilmesi, öğrencilerin öğrenme süreçlerini bilinçli ve stratejik olarak yönetmelerine katkıda bulunur.

    Studying design learning through video games: a novel approach to track learning in design

    Bu tez, tasarım öğrenimine yeni bir yaklaşım sunarak video oyunlarını ve otomasyonu, tasarım bilişi araştırmalarında kullanılması için bir araya getirmektedir. Video oyunlarını deneysel ortamlar olarak kullanarak tasarımdaki bilişsel süreçleri incelemek için yeni bir araştırma yöntemi geliştirilmiş ve bu yöntemin ciddi oyunlarla nasıl etkili bir şekilde uygulanabileceği araştırılmıştır. Bu ortamlar, gerçek dünyadaki tasarım zorluklarını simüle ederek anında geri bildirim sağlamakta, oyuncuları karmaşık karar verme süreçlerine dahil etmekte ve tasarım düşüncesindeki karmaşık bilişsel eylemleri yakalamaktadır. Tasarım öğrencileriyle gerçekleştirilen yapılandırılmış oyun oturumlarında, oyuncuların sanal ortamlarla etkileşime girerek tasarım problemlerini nasıl çözdükleri analiz edilmiştir. Gerçek zamanlı olarak bilişsel süreçleri izlemek için oyun içi eylemler ve karar noktalarının takibini içeren otomatikleştirilmiş yöntemler kullanılmış ve bu yöntemler, sesli düşünme protokolü kayıtlarıyla desteklenmiştir. Bu yaklaşım, dinamik ve etkileşimli ortamlarda tasarım bilişini kapsamlı bir şekilde analiz ederek nicel veriler yoluyla bilişsel kalıpları ortaya koymaktadır. Sonuçlar, video oyunlarının tasarım öğrenimini, geleneksel yöntemlerde sıklıkla bulunmayan sürükleyici ve uygulamalı deneyimler sunarak geliştirdiğini göstermektedir. Tasarım süreçlerini daha hızlı ve daha doğru bir şekilde simüle etme imkanı sunan bu araştırma, eğitimde ciddi oyunlar alanına katkıda bulunarak tasarım bilişinin incelenme biçimini dönüştürme potansiyelini vurgulamaktadır. Ayrıca, video oyunlarının eğitim ve araştırma araçları olarak değerini gösterirken, tasarım müfredatlarına entegrasyonu için ayrıntılı bir çerçeve önermektedir. Bulgular, bilişsel araştırma ve tasarım eğitimi arasındaki köprüyü güçlendirerek, video oyunlarının yenilikçiliği teşvik etme ve tasarım öğrenimini geliştirme potansiyelini ortaya koymaktadır.

    Investigations of Indoor Thermal and Air Flow Conditions in a Tobacco Warehouse

    This study investigates the thermal performance and indoor environment conditions of naturally and hybrid ventilated industrial buildings. Numerical analyses and experimental measurements were conducted in a tobacco warehouse in İzmir, Turkey. Parametric analyses were performed with three different approaches: i) 15 architectural design strategies are evaluated by using a sensitivity analysis. It is found that roof insulation thickness, shading projection factor, and shading angle have significant impact on heating and cooling requirements. In addition, the most influential factors on operational CO2 emissions are thickness of insulation material and conductivity of thermal insulation material. ii) Vertical and volumetric temperature gradients, crucial for stored product quality, are assessed through field measurements and CFD simulations. Ceiling-mounted radiant cooling systems reduced indoor temperatures by 3°C, while floor heating systems increased temperatures by 7°C, ensuring a consistent range of 21- 25°C by providing a range at defined indoor temperature values. Maximum loads are determined as 12.9W/m2 for cooling and 39.6W/m2 for heating. iii) The air change effectivenesses of different ventilation conditions are analysed. Four additional fans improved air exchange quality and decreased the volumetric mean age of air (AoA) from 1230 to 525 seconds. It is indicated that, while additional fans may decrease the mean AoA, maximizing the fan operation capacities is not obligatory to achieve increased air change effectiveness. Besides, the analysis of various fan operation scenarios significantly improves indoor environment conditions and energy efficiency. This thesis emphasizes the importance of design parameters in influencing indoor environmental conditions and energy consumption. The investigation of thermal air mixing and conditioning strategies underscores the need for a combined experimental and numerical approach. The findings contribute to effective solutions for warehouses storing temperature-sensitive products, ensuring optimal storage conditions and mitigating temperature variations during logistics operations.

    Parametric Flow Simulation for Early Design Phase: Case Study of an Urban Regeneration Area in Izmir

    Climate change and its effects on the planning of cities require new dynamics for designing new expansion zones or neighborhood development projects. In conceptual phases, decision-makers, architects, planners, and engineers must consider extreme weather events and increased wind speeds in cities due to climate change to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Proposed building layouts, geometrical parameters, and features should be investigated in an artificial environment to satisfy wind behavior for acceptable conditions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software provides insight into wind effects on the pedestrian level for the proposed layout of buildings and the surrounding area. This insight can boost the design process without conducting experimental wind tunnel tests. This study aims to assess the impact of building geometry (height, width, length) and building spacings in urban development projects for the safety and comfort of users in pedestrian-level wind environments with CFD simulations. The case area of this study is the first phase of an urban regeneration area in Izmir. The proposed layout is analyzed with prevailing wind speeds and directions to identify the dangerous and comfortable regions around buildings. Sub-configurations of buildings are simulated in CFD software to compare with existing wind tunnel tests for verification and validation. A design proposal with building features is evaluated with validated CFD parameters to examine the impact on pedestrian-level wind speeds. Mean speeds for corresponding comfort and safety limits of categorized human activities are compared to findings to identify suitable locations for these activities around buildings. Design parameters of urban layout; distance between buildings, height, and balconies on facades showed significant effects on pedestrian level wind environment. Building height among these parameters proved to be a decisive feature that should be considered in the early design stages.

    An Investigation Into Architecture Students' Creative Performance While Using Associative and Rule-Based Reasoning Strategies: Exploring a Dual Process Approach in Design Education

    This study investigates pedagogical strategies of how cognitive aspects of design thinking can be a subject of design education particularly in the first year design education. It focuses on design reasoning and on its two distinct forms as associative and rule-based reasoning. An experimental study composed of three different experiments is conducted to investigate the impact of using certain reasoning strategies on first year design students' creative performance. First experiment indicates that those students who were not directed to use either of the two forms of reasoning performed better. When students are asked to use a specific reasoning strategy in solving a design problem, this might increase students' cognitive load which in turn encumber their creative performance. The second experiment provides insights into the order in which these forms of reasoning can be introduced to students in design studio education. The results indicate that when students first conduct a free exploration of the given design problem before being asked to use one of the reasoning strategies their creative performance is better. It is proposed that familiarization with a given problem freely prepares students for a structured design exploration through either rule-based or associative reasoning strategy. The third experiment investigates the impact of a specially designed instruction to use one of the reasoning strategies. When students are provided with an explicit instruction giving information on two forms of reasoning strategies and their use in design before exploring the design problem on their own, the results demonstrated the utility of providing specific information on these reasoning strategies particularly for associative reasoning strategies. The findings suggest that a dual process approach to design education could be beneficial in developing pedagogical strategies for design learning.

    A Model for Exploring Legitimization Strategies Used in Architectural Design Competitions

    Studying the legitimacy of strategic decision has become one of the topical research areas in management due to the increasing demand for ensuring social acceptability and reliability of organizational decisions. Recently, studies dealing with the built environment have also started to examine legitimacy concerns in detail. This thesis aims to explore the concept of legitimacy in the field of built environment by focusing on architectural practice. The main reason to focus on architectural practice is the controversial approaches that prevail about the legitimacy of architectural actions and decisions. A conceptual model is proposed based on an in-depth analysis of the concepts of legitimacy and strategic decision-making in the context of architectural practice. The proposed conceptual model is validated by analyzing thirty-two architectural design competitions. Pragmatic, moral and cognitive legitimacy strategies are analyzed at different phases of competitions that are guidelines, questions, project and jury reports. Research findings, based on the analysis of competition transcripts through Histogram and K-means clustering methods, provide valuable information to understand the legitimacy strategies of different stakeholders better. The research findings also guide stakeholders to improve their justifications for achieving more reliable, valid and socially accepted design decisions. The proposed research methodology constitutes an effective decision analysis approach to evaluate the legitimacy strategies in the built environment.

    Comparison of Architectural Design Parameters in Traditional Buildings in Terms of Energy Performance for Future Housing Design

    Architectural studies re-orient through traditional architecture because of the energy crisis. The purpose of this study is to examine the architectural design parameters of traditional dwellings in terms of energy efficiency for future housing design in a hot humid climate. The case of this study is the 19th Century İzmir Houses. Two base case buildings with two and single-story were determined. Onsite measurements were taken from these buildings to identify the building material properties and to understand their thermal behavior. They were modeled and simulated with the DesignBuilder energy simulation program. The calibration and validation processes were conducted on these models. Two and single-story 114 types of İzmir Houses were modeled using the base drawings of the actual examples of these types and the validated material properties of the base case buildings in two different settlements where they are most frequently seen. The energy consumptions of these models were simulated. The statistical analyses were applied to examine the relationship between the source energy consumption per square meter and the design parameters of İzmir Houses. The design parameters such as the location of the hall, plan type, the existence of the basement, window to wall ratio, wall to floor ratio, window to floor ratio, total building area, wall to volume ratio, settlement pattern were found effective on the building energy performance. The least energy-consuming two-story İzmir houses type has a basement and side hall plan while the single-story house has a basement and central hall plan.

    A Model for Evaluating the Absorptive Capacity of Architectural Design Teams

    The primary challenge facing social actors (i.e., individuals, groups and firms) operating in the Architectural Construction and Engineering (AEC) industry has been delivering value to their stakeholders. The research presented herein addresses this primary challenge in the context of the architectural design teams. It develops a conceptual framework that builds on the concept of absorptive capacity, value theory and activity based theory. The conceptual framework proposes that the absorptive capacity of architectural design teams has significant influence on project outcomes. It also proposes that power relationships, knowledge search mechanisms and social integration mechanisms and of architectural design teams significantly influence their absorptive capacity. These research propositions were empirically tested by a survey of 121 architects operating in Turkey. Research findings based on multiple regression analysis provided mixed support to the research propositions. Research findings suggest that three out of four dimensions of absorptive capacity (i.e., acquisition, transformation and exploitation) have significant impact on project value outcomes but not assimilation. Research findings also suggest that power relationships (i.e., support for innovative/novel design, resource supply and team autonomy), social integration mechanisms (i.e., relationship, structural and cognitive dimensions) and knowledge search mechanisms (i.e., search breadth and depth) have varying degrees of influence on the four dimensions of absorptive capacity.
