Izmir Institute of TechnologyWithin Modernization, Modern design always rejected tradition and past and also focused on austerity and functionality. Modern design has always been criticized for being separated from nature and everyday life. Modern design has always been considered as being an alienated product of industrial production mode. However, Scandinavian design, Northern Europe design approach, has been distinguished in integrating their tradition and cultural identity into their design perspective which also embraces functionality. Additionally, Scandinavian design has been shaped as an integral part of their everyday life styles along with environmental factors. Their approach has been improved or influenced by the farm workers and fishermen who produced their own furniture using materials such as wood from the forest especially pine and spruce. They used cotton, linen, wool, sheepskin and furs for domestic textiles. They used palettes as light and pallid in contrast to the Mediterranean countries. They used vivid patterns inspired by the nature to create comfortable and warm atmosphere. Thus, the result was differentiated in Modern design in its own broadest definition. This study argues that Scandinavian modern design created its own style. It focuses on integrating its tradition into modern notion, and also relates it with the environmental factors, everyday life styles and nature. The study searches Scandinavian design which refers to the nature and embodies the nature as design along with emotions and colors. Sweden is chosen for the case study as a representative Scandinavian country. Izmir Institute of TechnologyDesign has been a structural part of the industrialization processes and has inadvertently contributed to the creation of the current ecological problems of the planet. So far industrial design discipline has been producing its ecological solutions, mostly using an approach focused on products, but the changes required by the question of sustainability are systemic and can be based on the usage of services. Considering the requirement of changes in production and consumption modes, this thesis proposes a systemic approach to the problem of sustainability. Systemic change, which focuses on social interventions in daily life as well as alternative production models, is a more holistic approach for sustainability. When shifting the focus from product-based and result-oriented solutions towards process-based, experience-oriented and context-related ones the design discipline introduces co-design approach with more intense participation of users to the design process. This thesis investigates the issues mentioned above through a case study about the development of local food system in Aalborg. To this purpose, more specific user and local area research is conducted. Izmir Institute of TechnologyToday, energy is very important to the development of the countries and most of the energy comes off from fossil fuels, but they are limited and they pollute the environment. Despite the fact that the need for energy is increasing, to stop the pollution and to fulfil the need, new researches have been done. Hence the renewable sources are getting important, new technologies have been improved. Turkey does not have enough fossil fuel reserves, so it is addicted to other countries. Thus, renewable energy is more important to our country. Our country has a very big renewable energy potential. Thus, in this study renewable energy sources (solar, geothermal,etc.) and technologies have been observed and studies have been reviewed. The main goals of the industrial design are making difference, producing effective and aesthetic solutions that are in unison with people and nature. If we consider that design is in relation with industry, and industry is focused and dependent on energy; it is understood that, design and energy concepts are integrated to each other. In such a case, it is not possible to think not considering renewable energy in design process that considers both human and nature factors in manufacturing and usage. Another goal of the industrial design is transfering new technologies into the products, so renewable energy technologies must be transferred into the design process. By considering these, primarily the reasons for the renewable energy need and solar energy & solar technologies have been searched. Then, the solar energy based products have been researched to understand the possibilities. Afterwards, public lighting components are searched, and three concept solar lights; Discrete Illuminator, P-Light, Obliques; are proposed as the components of the design study for public use. Radiation data of İzmir are analysed and energy that light(s) can produce is calculated to understand the feasibility of the designs. Consequently, it is understood that the used technology (flexible cells) is not feasible for real conditions. Furthermore, 'The Obliques' is redesigned, customized for suitable technology (crystalline cells) to make it an improved, a feasible and a new solar product for public lighting.
