Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Dovecotes in Kayabağ Village: an Assessment of Landscape and Architectural Characteristics(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2020) İnceköse, ÜlküThe dovecotes of Kayseri-Gesi stand out as unique examples of indigenous architecture of Anatolia. They are considered significant elements of the rural landscape. The purpose of the construction, the constructional and spatial characteristics peculiar to these dovecotes, make them an important element of global cultural and architectural heritage. Dovecotes that are built upon rocks, with mere building stones provided from the same rocks, look like a shaped form of the topography itself. This is very much to do with the geological features of the Cappadocia Region where Kayseri is located. In terms of construction techniques and spatial organization, the dramatic differences in the dovecotes’ underground and aboveground parts make them even more outstanding. This research is based on the field studies conducted in the dovecotes of Kayabağ. The landscape was studied in all aspects and each dovecote is studied for its placement, topographical interactions, plan and section typologies, materiality and construction techniques. The structural problems stemmed from the geological features and the deterioration caused by external factors are taken into consideration. The study concludes with an overall approach for preservation, sustainability and conservation process of the heritage landscape of Dovecotes [Güvercinlik] of Kayabağ.Article Active Fault Tolerant Control of a Wind Farm System(IFAC Secretariat, 2018) Simani, Silvio; Turhan, CihanIn order to enhance the 'sustainability’ of offshore wind farms, thus skipping unplanned maintenance operations and costs, that can be important for offshore systems, the earlier management of faults represents the key point. Therefore, this work studies the development of an adaptive sustainable control scheme with application to a wind farm benchmark consisting of nine wind turbine systems. They are described via their nonlinear models, as well as the wind and wake effects among the wind turbines of the wind park. The fault tolerant control strategy uses the recursive estimation of the faults provided by nonlinear estimators designed via a nonlinear differential algebraic tool. This aspect of the study, together with the more straightforward solution based on a data-driven scheme, is the key issue when on-line applications are proposed for a viable implementation of the proposed solutions.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 6Optimization of Some Cations for Removal of Arsenic From Groundwater by Electrocoagulation Process(Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi, 2018) Kobya, Mehmet; Şık, Emrah; Demirbaş, Erhan; Gören, Ayşegül Yağmur; Öncel, Mehmet SalimThis study dealt with investigation of arsenic removal from groundwater using electrocoagulation (EC) method in a batch mode by the Box-Behnken experimental design method. Effects of some cations like Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn and operating time on the removal were explored by an air injected EC reactor. The combined effects of these variables were analyzed by the quadratic model for predicting the highest removal efficiency of arsenic from groundwater. The arsenic removal efficiency was found to be dependent on increase with operating time and concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and lower concentration of Mn. When operating variables were considered as minimum operating cost and maximum removal efficiency, the optimum operating parameters were determined to be 132 mg/L of CCa, 55 mg/L of CMg, 4.5 mg /L of CFe, 4.5 mg/L of CMn and operating time of 3 min to meet the target concentration of <10 μg/L. Values of removal efficiency and operating cost at the optimum conditions were 95.1% and 0.041 $/m3.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Determining Water and Sediment Quality Related To Lead-Zinc Mining Activity(Polish Academy of Sciences, 2018) Şanlıyüksel Yücel, Deniz; Baba, AlperThis study focuses on the Koru and Tesbihdere Pb-Zn mining districts, located at the upstream areas of the Umurbey dam basin. Mining activities in Koru, one of the longest operated mines in NW Turkey, date back to the beginning of the 1900s. The purpose of the study is to (1) determine the hydrochemical properties of the water resources and to assess the potential environmental consequences of mining activities in the Koru and Tesbihdere mining districts, and (2) investigate the effects caused by mining activities on the water resources and sediment quality in the Umurbey dam basin. Concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn in river sediments downstream of the Tesbihdere and Koru mining district, and in the Umurbey dam sediments were higher than the world average for river sediments. The geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor revealed that sediments were strongly polluted with Pb and Zn, moderately to strongly polluted with Cd and moderately polluted with Cu. The chemical analyses of water resources revealed that the maximum Fe, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cu concentrations reached 2890 μg/l, 1785 μg/l, 1180 μg/l, 984 μg/l, and 419 μg/l, respectively. The Koru River is classified as polluted water according to Turkish inland water quality regulations. Many of scientists are confident that if current emissions of greenhouse gases continue, the world will be warmer, sea levels will rise and regional climate patterns will change. According to some scientist, global temperatures are expected to rise faster over the next century than over any time during the last 10,000 years. From this token, geothermal energy is now considered to be one of the most important alternative energy sources to minimize climate change. Geothermal technologies for power generation or direct use operate with little or no greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal energy is generally accepted as being an environmentally-friendly energy source, particularly when compared to fossil fuel energy sources. Geothermal resources have long been used for direct heat extraction for district urban heating, industrial processing, domestic water and space heating, leisure and balneotherapy applications. Geothermal energy is used in more than 80 countries for direct heat application and 24 countries for power generation. Re-injection of fluids maintains a constant pressure in the reservoir, thus increasing the field's life and reducing concerns about environmental impacts. Geothermal energy has several significant characteristics that make it suitable for climate change mitigation.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 8Way-Finding Strategies of Blind Persons in Urban Scale(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2017) Kan Kılıç, Didem; Doğan, FehmiThe aim of this study was to determine whether urban environments with different prominent sensory inputs have an impact on the way-finding strategies of blind people and to identify these impacts, where applicable. We specifically investigated how blind people use their senses to compensate for the lack of visual information and how the priority of senses changes according to the urban context. The participants of the study consisted of nine congenitally blind individuals and the study took place in two urban settings: a dense urban district, Kemeralti district in İzmir; and an urban park, the İzmir Fair Park. During the learning phase, a first trial along the selected routes was conducted for each participant individually along with one of the researchers. In the test phase, the participants were requested to re-walk the route and verbally report the environmental cues they attended to. The participants’ verbal reports were recorded and transcripts of the recordings were coded according to the environmental sensory inputs. In addition, the short-term memory of each participant was also evaluated. The results show that the characteristics of the urban environment seem to have an impact on way-finding strategies of blind individuals. It was found that the sound of the city and the echo from the environment are the most important factors for blind participants in the dense urban environment. Environmental boundaries provided echoes and gave a sense of enclosure that helped them orient themselves, whereas, in the park environment, the sense of enclosure was not enhanced due to a lack of boundaries in the environment.Article An Application With Webmathematica(Springer Verlag, 2003) Ufuktepe, ÜnalThere have been many technological dawns in the last 30 years, during which the desktop computer and the Internet have been developed. A wealth of resources and techniques now exist which serve as a source both for exciting examples of new teaching practices, as well as easily accessible methods for adoption into various formats of teaching and learning. Internet technology allow teachers and students keep up with their minds. It let them try their ideas as soon as they come up with them. Generally, students appreciate the convenience, choice, and flexibility that an online courses offers. Instructional designers value the standardized framework and flexibility. WebMathematica is a web-based technology developed by Wolfram Research that allows the generation of dynamic web content with Mathematica. With this technology, the distance education students should be able to explore and experiment with the mathematical concepts. In this paper we will elucidate the pedagogical issues in the application of Hamiltonian systems in the webMathematica for the distance learning environment and the shape of the future "classroom" as well as relevant educational strategies towards improving mathematics education.Article Effects of Reactor Pressure and Inlet Temperature on N-butane/Dimethyl Ether Oxidation and the Formation Pathways of the Aromatic Species(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2016) Bekat, Tuğçe; İnal, FikretOxidation of n-butane/dimethyl ether (DME)/O2/Ar system was studied by chemical kinetic modeling in a tubular reactor operated adiabatically and at constant pressure. Effects of the reactor pressure on the formation of various major, minor, and trace oxidation products were investigated for two different pressures (1 and 5 atm) and at six different inlet temperature values (700, 800, 900, 1100, 1300, and 1500 K). The analysis was carried out for two different concentrations of dimethyl ether in the inlet fuel mixture (20 and 50 mol %). Higher pressure (5 atm) resulted in higher mole fractions of methane, vinylacetylene, and cyclopentadiene; and lower mole fractions of formaldehyde, acetylene, acetaldehyde, ethane, propargyl, and propane. The mole fractions of CO and CO2 were not affected considerably by the pressure change. The main formation routes of benzene were developed at two different inlet temperature values (1100 and 1300 K), and the main precursors participating in these routes were found to be propargyl, propene, and diacetylene. A skeletal mechanism was developed for the oxidation of n-butane/DME mixture from the detailed mechanism by reduction of the elementary reactions by 79%, and it was tested for accuracy by comparison with the data from the literature.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Genetic relationships among Eurasian Puccinellia distans genotypes(Elsevier Ltd., 2015) Bar, Cantuğ; Doğanlar, Sami; Frary, AnnePuccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. is a common grass species found throughout the world. It can grow in arid and saline environments as well as under toxic boron concentrations. In this work we performed sequence related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) marker analysis on 20 wild P. distans genotypes to understand the genetic relationships among different genotypes and subspecies. We tested 119 SRAP primer pairs and found that 43 were polymorphic. The molecular data were then analyzed to determine the genetic relationships and population structure of the genotypes. We were able to trace the origin of genotypes that were carried to distant locations or gathered for research purposes. We also found that geographical distance between genotypes was not an important determinant of genetic relationships as even distantly located Puccinellia genotypes were closely related. As P. distans is known to be tolerant to salinity stress and toxic mineral concentrations, the findings of this work can be used as a starting point for selection of genotypes that should be tested under such conditions.
