Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe concept of “Corporate Social Responsibility” is one of the most discussed and debated issues in literature. It argues that firms should behave responsibly to the environment, society, and all stakeholders. Construction firms have been relatively slow, compared to firms operating in other industries, in adopting “Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)” practices. Yet it is a topical managerial issue for construction firms. The main objective of the research present in this thesis is to explore the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility practices in the context of construction industry. The sample used in this thesis is composed of 205 construction firms listed in ENR‟s 2018 Top 250 International Contractors. CSR discourses of construction firms are explored by using content analysis of CSR reports, financial reports, corporate web pages and other web sources. The research findings suggest that CSR practices/discourses used in the construction industry can be categorized into nine major groups. The most common CSR practices/discourses used in construction industry focuses on customer issues, environmental issues and labour issues. Research results also highlight that nationality of the firms, continent in which construction firms located and the ranking of construction firms in ENR list have significant impact on the use of CSR practices/discourse.Article Citation - WoS: 29Citation - Scopus: 31Evaluating the Knowledge Management Practices of Construction Firms by Using Importance-Comparative Performance Analysis Maps(American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2011) Kale, Serdar; Kale, Serdar; 02.02. Izmir Institute of TechnologyThe emergence of the effective management of knowledge resources as a key factor in gaining and sustaining competitive advantage presents new challenges to construction firms. Evaluating knowledge management practices is considered one of the most important challenges facing firms in today's business environment. This paper proposes a model for evaluating the knowledge management practices of construction firms. The proposed model incorporates knowledge management concepts and multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks to construct an importance-comparative performance analysis (ICPA) map, a simple visual tool that can provide powerful diagnostic information to executives of construction firms. The model evaluates a firm's knowledge management practices, identifies its competitive advantages and disadvantages in each knowledge management practice, and sets priorities for managerial actions to improve knowledge management practices. A real-world case study was conducted by administering a survey to 105 construction firms operating in Turkey and is presented to illustrate the implementation and utility of the proposed model. The case study findings provided preliminary support for the validity of the proposed model.
