    Ecophysiological Properties of Turkish Endemic Centaurea Consanguinea Dc.

    This physiological and ecological study was performed on Centaurea consanguinea DC. to acquire information about certain characteristics (bioclimatic, edaphic, topographic, biotic etc.) of its habitat and distribution in Turkey, determine the requirements for germination, explore the soil-plant relations and obtain data on certain aspects of its population biology. Plant and co-located soil samples were collected from Amasya and Havza District (Samsun) in Turkey using standard methods. Various analyzes were employed for determining of physical, chemical and biological properties of the plant species and its co-located soils including pH, total protein and electrical conductivity (EC), soil texture, contents of mineral nutrition and other physical and chemical parameters and the results were presented. Nutrient amounts (in %) were found to be in the ranges of 0.01-0.007 for N, 0.0008-0.001 for P, 0.01-0.09 for K, 0.0002-0.0003 for Na in the soils and 2.25 for N, 0.0068 for P, 0.07 for K and 0.02 for Na in the plant, respectively. Also, it was observed that germination ratios of the seeds were depended on various factors.

    Drying of Olive Leaves in a Geothermal Dryer and Determination of Quality Parameters of Dried Product

    In this study, a cabinet type geothermal dryer was designed, operated and tested for drying olive leaves with minimum losses of phenolic content and antioxidant capacity by optimization of drying conditions. Two factors; face centered central composite design was applied and response surface methodology was used to optimize the drying conditions of olive leaves. The results indicate that phenolic content stability were mainly affected by air temperature, whereas antioxidant capacity is affected by both air temperature and velocity (p<0.05). The optimal drying conditions were found to be at 50°C of air temperature and 1 m/s of air velocity for the minimum losses of determined quality parameters, where 88.8% of phenolic content and 95.3% of antioxidant capacity were recovered.

    Biofabrication of Cellular Structures Using Weightlessness as a Biotechnological Tool

    Gravity is an important biomechanical signal effecting the morphology and function of organisms. Reduction of gravitational forces, as experienced during spaceflight, cause alterations in the biological systems. Magnetic levitation technique is one of the most recent ground-based technology to mimic weightlessness environment. In addition to providing a platform to investigate biological effects of the weightlessness, this platform presents a novel opportunity to biofabricate 3-dimensional (3D) structures in a scaffold-and nozzle-free fashion. In this study, various controllable self-assembled 3D living structures were fabricated via magnetic levitation technique. This strategy may offer an easy and cost-effective opportunity for a wide range of space biotechnology researches.

    Application of Magnetic Levitation Induced Weightlessness To Detect Cell Lineage

    Identification and classification of bone marrow cells is an important step for molecular biology and therapeutic studies related to bone marrow disorders such as osteoporosis or obesity. In this study, we applied magnetic levitation technology to induce a weightlessness environment to detect adipocytes and osteoblasts based on their single cell density. This biotechnological method can be used for separation of heterogeneous populations such as bone marrow once adapted to a continuous microfluidic platform.

    Assessing the Walkability Principles: the Case Study of Mehmetçik Boulevard

    Walkability is defined as the action of the human being to go from one place to another. The streets are one of the most important parts of the built environment and their using by pedestrians increases urban consciousness and social ties. The quality of walkability varies according to the location, usage, and character of the public space. Walkability issue has become more important due to urban growth and an increase in vehicle usage in today's' cities. Increasing walkability in a city increases livability. The aim of this thesis is to assess the walkability quality of urban streets considering walkability principles. In this context, the thesis aims to investigate the principles that affect walkability in urban centers and considering walkability principles to examine the built environment characteristics and pedestrians' usage of a street through a case study. The thesis also attempts to offer recommendations for creating more walkable spaces. For these purposes, firstly, the definition and importance of the concept of walkability are examined. Secondly, walkability principles of the streets in urban centers are established. Thirdly, Mehmetçik Boulevard, which is located in one of the sub-centers of İzmir and used intensively during the day, is evaluated according to the walkability principles. In this study, the walkability quality of the boulevard is examined and assessed in the context of diversity, accessibility, safety, street quality, comfort and legibility principles. Finally, as a result of the literature study and the case study, recommendations are provided to increase walkability quality of Mehmetçik Boulevard, and as well as for urban streets of other cities.

    Assessment of Wood Laminated Material for Housing Production

    Today, laminated wood material is used in different types of structures. In many countries such as our country, as well as countries where this usage is intense, laminated wood material is not preferred in housing production yet. Although it seems that reinforced concrete structures have replaced wooden structures today, environmentally sensitive approaches expressed with concepts such as sustainability, ecological balance and repeatability have enabled the reuse of wood material. In this study, the properties of laminated wood technology, which is predicted to be an alternative technology to conventional construction technologies, are evaluated. With this assessment, laminated wood technology could be an alternative structure production technology in our country. At the beginning of the study, wood materials, wood damaging factors, composite wood materials, the use of wood in residential production and the use of laminated wood in residential production were examined under four main headings. The properties of wood materials and laminated wood materials were examined in detail and the methods, advantages and disadvantages of these materials were determined. This study is detailed on the structure of JZ House which was designed and built by architect Serhat AKBAY in Antalya with laminated wood technology. The laminated wooden parts produced for the building were examined based on scientific data on the design process, static resistance of the building, fire resistance, sustainability, environmental and human health contributions. With the evaluation, it is aimed to increase the preference of wooden structures constructed with developing wood technology.

    Plant-On Devices for Sed Screening

    Thanks to their roots, plants take the required molecules from the soil, therefore their research is important. The fact that absorption takes place from the root hair makes the observations necessary. The inadequacy of traditional methods requires the development of new methods to ensure their observations, especially during root studies. The fact that chip systems have the features that can overcome the problems has caused plant researches by using this method. The fact that environmental factors can be imitated in chip systems paves the way for abiotic stresses to work. Although abiotic stresses have been studied extensively on plants, seed germination and subsequent root extension and root hair formation have not been studied in detail except for the model organism (Arabidopsis thaliana). The use of chip system for plant studies of scientists have begun the 21st century is also reveals the need to do more work in this area. Researchers show that they are excited about the advantages they bring to the system and that necessary studies will be carried out in other side branches. It is thought that more research will be done by using chip systems after a short time. By using chip systems, a suitable environment for seed growth can be provided and environmental conditions can be simulated. By creating the desired controlled environment, it is possible to create a system which results in less time and less cost in order to replace the inconvenient and expensive method.

    A Dedicated Server Design for Physical Web Applications

    With the huge impressive technological improvements the world is witnessing where giants like Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft and other technology companies are offering different services to millions of clients, services which don’t take usually more than seconds to be within the users’ devices besides the Physical Web applications that makes things interacts, having entities and can be reached based on the proximity context without omitting the incoming IoT infrastructure that would make 20.4 billion devices connected by 2020, the amount of data transferred, and services provided will be enormous and along with that, the big energy consumer standing behind providing clients with the needed data and services instantly, the web servers. Although it has a magnificent performance and responds to billions of queries and requests, however, there is still a crucial point which must be highlighted, the remarkable amounts of energy consumption by these servers. Therefore, this work is proposing a new approach in order to reduce the energy consumption in such a scenario where the 18-core energy efficient computer Parallella board will be used in order to create an energy efficient server that can offer many services triggered by various devices or any ordinary web requests across any environment and to prove also that using a cluster of Parallella supercomputers may perform as other similar servers dealing with web content (e.g. Raspberry Pi server). We will show how would these boards work under low energy feeding where users can access a web content hosted on a Parallella cluster. The source codes of the project are available on GitHub.

    Housing Production in the Last Thirty Years and Housing Question of the Poor in Izmir

    In this thesis, housing production in the last thirty years and housing question of the poor in İzmir is examined. The case study focuses on the squatter housing area in İkinci İnönü Neighborhood that has been suppressed by the luxury housing development and was declared as the urban transformation area under the Redevelopment of Areas Under Disaster Risk Law (no. 6306) by Narlıdere Municipality in 2013. The squatter housing development in İzmir started as the solution by the poor for the housing problem. Particularly in the last ten years, the urban transformation projects that aim to renew and transform the squatter housing areas resulted in exclusion through dispossession of the poor. The research problem is whether the poor can enter into the housing market; how and in what ways they articulate to the system; and what waits for them after the urban renewal project that would be carried out in the area. Accordingly, a field research was conducted. It was a methodologically pluralist work covering field survey, visual documentation, in-depth interviews with squatter housing inhabitants, the mukhtar and municipal authorities, focus group interviews, household questionnaires and interviews, and institutional data collection. The findings of the research indicate that the urban transformation project carried out in the squatter housing area will result in the exclusion and displacement of the poor. The project addresses to higher income groups, is market-oriented, and insensitive to the economic, social and cultural characteristics of the inhabitants of the area. The project will be carried out by the 50% shareholding partnership of Narlıdere Municipality and a private company. Although the urban transformation project has been submitted to the approval of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, there is no agreement that specifies the title deed right of the residents.

    Inclusive Design for Public Space in Basmane, Izmir: Psychogeography as a Design Method for Urban Furniture

    İzmir is a city that has attracted immigrants throughout the history, and Basmane in particular, has functioned as a transition hub in İzmir Basmane is a multicultural, multilingual and multiethnic district in İzmir People from different cultures and ethnicities live in this district. In such a district, people may need to have hospitality and a friendly atmosphere to live in harmony. The changes of living conditions and social structure due to mass migration, the design of urban space has become more important. It can be provided improvement people's quality of life and standards, contribution to society, creation of hospitable environment, and the feeling of belonging with urban space design. Urban furniture is the integral element of urban public spaces. Urban furniture is expected to meet human needs in public spaces. This study examines inclusive design in order to analyze the principles of urban furniture design. In order to get inclusive design approach and the accurate data of Basmane district, psychogeography was used as a design method. A questionnaire was conducted to reach out people and gather data regarding their needs in Basmane. With the consideration of the results of the dérive experience and based on the findings of the questionnaire, a suggestion of inclusive urban furniture design was shaped.
