    Mobile Join Operators for Restricted Sources

    We consider the problem of query execution when there is limited access to the relations, i.e. when binding patterns require values to be specified in order to get data from the relation. This problem is common in virtual data integration systems where there are heterogeneous sources with various restricted access patterns and query capabilities. Another problem is the lack of the statistical information about the sources and occurrence of unpredictable events. We introduce two mobile join operators, MDJoin and SMDJoin which are designed for restricted sources and implemented using ‘mobile agents’ in order to benefit from their autonomous and reactive characteristics. Mobile operators of restricted sources are capable to deal with restricted sources and react to the variations between the compile-time estimations and run-time computations of data during query execution. The difference between the two new query operators lies in their level of adaptation ability to the execution environment. Performance results show that mobile agent-based approach at operator level can lead to a significant reduction in response time with restricted sources.

    A Comparative Study of Modularity-Based Community Detection Methods for Online Social Networks

    Digital data represent our daily activities and tendencies. One of its main source is Online Social Networks (OSN) such as Facebook, YouTube etc. OSN are generating continuously high volume of data and define a dynamic virtual environment. This environment is mostly represented by graphs. Analysis of OSN data (i.e.,extracting any kind of relations and tendencies) defines valuable information for economic, socio-cultural and politic decisions. Community detection is important to analyze and understand underlying structure and tendencies of OSNs. When this information can be analysed successfully, software engineering tools and decision support systems can produce more successful results for end users. In this study, we present a survey of selected outstanding modularity-based static community detection algorithms and do comparative analysis among them in terms of modularity, running time and accuracy. We use different real-world OSN test beds selected from SNAP dataset collection such as Facebook Ego network, Facebook Pages network (Facebook gemsec), LiveJournal, Orkut and YouTube networks.

    An Aspect-Lexicon Creation and Evaluation Tool for Sentiment Analysis Researchers

    In this demo paper, we present SARE, a modular and extendable semi-automatic system that 1) assists researchers in building gold-standard lexicons and evaluating their lexicon extraction algorithms; and 2) provides a general and extendable sentiment analysis environment to help researchers analyze the behavior and errors of a core sentiment analysis engine using a particular lexicon.

    Policies for Role Based Agents in Environments With Changing Ontologies

    Software agents try to achieve the goals of roles that they have in an environment. It is supposed that the dynamic structure of role based agents can be connected with updatable domain ontologies of the environment. Ontology evolution can cause the update of agent behaviors or access restrictions to ontological elements. So regulation for the agent behaviors may be needed. Our motivation is to create a suitable policy model for agents, environments and organizations when ontologies in the environment can change.

    Advances in Model-Based Testing of Graphical User Interfaces

    Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) enable comfortable interactions of the computer-based systems with their environment. Large systems usually require complex GUIs, which are commonly fault prone and thus are to be carefully designed, implemented, and tested. As a thorough testing is not feasible, techniques are favored to test relevant features of the system under test that will be specifically modeled. This chapter summarizes, reviews, and exemplifies conventional and novel techniques for model-based GUI testing.

    Federated Query Processing on Linked Data: a Qualitative Survey and Open Challenges

    A large number of data providers publish and connect their structured data on the Web as linked data. Thus, the Web of data becomes a global data space. In this paper, we initially give an overview of query processing approaches used in this interlinked and distributed environment, and then focus on federated query processing on linked data. We provide a detailed and clear insight on data source selection, join methods and query optimization methods of existing query federation engines. Furthermore, we present a qualitative comparison of these engines and give a complementary comparison of the measured metrics of each engine with the idea of pointing out the major strengths of each one. Finally, we discuss the major challenges of federated query processing on linked data. © 2015 Cambridge University Press.

    A Model of Distributed Key Generation for Industrial Control Systems

    The cyber-security of industrial control systems (ICS) is gaining high relevance due to the impact of industrial system failures on the citizen life. There is an urgent need for the consideration of security in their design, and for the analysis of the related vulnerabilities and potential threats. The high exposure of industrial critical infrastructure to cyber-threats is mainly due to the intrinsic weakness of the communication protocols used to control the process network. The peculiarities of the industrial protocols (low computational power, large geographical distribution, near to real-time constraints) make hard the effective use of traditional cryptographic schemes and in particular the implementation of an effective key management infrastructure supporting a cryptographic layer. In this paper, we describe a "model of distributed key generation for industrial control systems" we have recently implemented. The model is based on a known Distributed Key Generator protocol we have adapted to an industrial control system environment and to the related communication protocol (Modbus). To validate in a formal way selected security properties of the model, we introduced a Petri Nets representation. This representation allows for modeling attacks against the protocol and understanding some potential weaknesses of its implementation in the industrial control system environment.

    Resource Allocation Algorithm for a Relational Join Operator in Grid Systems

    Grid systems become very popular during the last decade because of their rapidly increasing computational capabilities. On the other hand, the advances on different domains cause enormous increase in the scale of the manipulated data. This issue augments the importance of distributed query processing and causes researchers to port their underlying environment onto the grid systems. However the dynamicity, heterogeneity and large scale characteristics of grid systems pose new problems for the distributed query processing domain. Resource allocation for query processing in grid systems is one of these problems, which attracts many researchers' attention. In this paper, we propose a new resource allocation algorithm for one relational join operator in a query considering characteristics of the grid systems. We provide theoretical analyses of the proposed algorithm and we consolidate analyses with the simulations. Copyright © 2012 ACM.

    Orderbased Labeling Scheme for Dynamic Xml Query Processing

    Need for robust and high performance XML database systems increased due to growing XML data produced by today's applications. Like indexes in relational databases, XML labeling is the key to XML querying. Assigning unique labels to nodes of a dynamic XML tree in which the labels encode all structural relationships between the nodes is a challenging problem. Early labeling schemes designed for static XML document generate short labels; however, their performance degrades in update intensive environments due to the need for relabeling. On the other hand, dynamic labeling schemes achieve dynamicity at the cost of large label size or complexity which results in poor query performance. This paper presents OrderBased labeling scheme which is dynamic, simple and compact yet able to identify structural relationships among nodes. A set of performance tests show promising labeling, querying, update performance and optimum label size. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

    A Survey of Agent Technologies for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) do not have a fixed infrastructure and consist of sensor nodes that perform sensing and communicating tasks. The WSNs have large application spectrum such as habitat monitoring, military surveillance, and target tracking, where sensor nodes may operate distributed in highly dynamic environments. Battery-constrained sensor nodes may aggregate the sensed data, localize themselves, and route the packets in an energy-efficient and decentralized manner to enable running the applications. Agents are capable of independent and autonomous action, so that they can successfully carry out tasks that have been delegated to them, thus agent-based approaches are very suitable to apply as the solution of the problems occurring in WSNs. So far many agent-based approaches were proposed for WSNs. This paper surveys the agent technologies for sensor networks by providing a classification, objectives and costs of these approaches with the open research problems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that covers the intersection of the agent technology and sensor networks from a wide perspective.
