The diagnosis of cancer influences the lives of children in many ways. Instead of maintaining daily activities, children often visit hospitals or stay there for an uncertain period. Due to the disease and treatment, children experience suffering and pain, their school and play activities are interrupted and they become separated from social and familiar environments. This may cause several problems in their development and quality of life (QOL). QOL is the state of well-being in terms of physical, psychological and social aspects. According to surveys that investigate the negative effects of cancer on children’s QOL, “the loss of normalcy” and inability to play, do sports, spend time with family and friends are considered by children to be worse than the physical symptoms and side effects of the treatment. Children with cancer need play during hospitalization in order to pursue their development and to feel normal. A case study was conducted in Dokuz Eylül University Nevvar and Salih İşgören Children’s Hospital in order to understand the needs of children with cancer, provide a design suggestion for their play area, and especially investigate the effects of the participatory design process on QOL of children. A participatory design study was carried out in order to achieve more responsive results to participants’ needs by involving users in the design process. It was found out that the process contributes to the improvement of QOL of children by making them feel that their ideas matter as well as distracting them from negative thoughts regarding cancer.

Call Center as an Epitome of Communicative Capitalism: Participatory Design as an Empowering Tool
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2019) Kaya, Rabia Gülbike; Tunç Fox, Ayça; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
With the purpose of involving users in the design process, Participatory Design offers participants a democratic process in which participants can express themselves by using their experiences, and notice their problems and capabilities thanks to the methods applied in the process. This study investigates the potential of a Participatory Design process whereby employees of a call center in Manisa participate. Inbound call agents, who work in call centers which are shaped by Communicative Capitalism, do not have an impact on anything except for the customers they communicate with. Moreover, the fact that they do not have a say in their working environment, they are under constant surveillance and decision concerning them are made by others, shows that inbound call agents are in need of empowerment. This study explores the potential of Participatory Design as a tool for empowering participants rather than providing a design proposal. To this end, a Participatory Design process was conducted with the inbound call agents who need to be empowered. According to the findings obtained at the end of the study; the participants identified the problems they had at work and realized that they could find solutions to these problems by exchanging ideas with each other. At the end of the process, Participatory Design enabled participants to become aware of their capabilities and empowerments in the field they are experienced in.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2016) Aykul, Zeynep; Erkarslan, Önder; Erkarslan, Önder; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Open source tools can support industrial designers to follow technology and trends easily. If industrial designers start using open source tools in their design processes, they can overcome difficulties, and make the process easier. The first step of research showed that industrial design students have the difficulties in the specific tasks of design process such as design presentation, design research, design decision, concept generation and design documentation. In addition to difficult tasks, reasons of difficulties were also asked to build a connection between open source tools and the solutions of difficulties. In the second step of research, students’ approaches for open source tools’ use were analyzed with presentation and feedback session. However, taking feedback with a questionnaire were not enough to analyze their approach. For this reason, three different studies were designed to find the most effective way to see how industrial design students use open source tools in their design processes. The first two studies were accepted as pilot studies which were re-design workshop and open source tools’ usage in industrial design studio courses. Due to limitations and insufficient outcomes required the third studies which are simulation of open source community. The study aimed to create an effective environment which offers an experience of open source tools with all the elements such as source, sharing, contribution and community. Introduction to Design Thinking Course’ students participated the study in Industrial Product Design Department at Istanbul Technical University. They shared their term project as open source and open source community was created in the classroom. Thus, difficulties of students in the design process were aimed to overcome. The results indicated that students overcome difficulties of “Finding inspiration”, “Express concept correctly and quickly”, “Changing and developing ideas” and “Decision skills”.

While augmented reality enables us to attach images and information from virtual environment into the real world; technology and computer science enables us to go beyond our limits of visual perception through showing us the world with the information which was not there before. The aim of this research is to design a system that will enhance the awareness of the vocational education students over the topic of occupational health and safety. With the augmented reality system projected on the work surface, the students will be warned when they perform actions that pose a risk, needs caution and may result in accidents. As they are doing it, therefore, they will understand the faultiness of the actions again. In this work, augmented reality is chosen based on two advantages; students will be able to access the information needed, in this project warnings, without looking at directions other than the work surface and there exists lack of study in the topic of augmented reality in the field of industrial design. The research involves a literature review and two case studies in Konak Çınarlı Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi with high school and university students. A system is designed according to findings from these studies. As the result, students’ caution was got and the number of mistakes was decreased. This resulted in decrease in the number of occupational accidents, deaths and financial loss. The project may also become a new method of teaching occupational safety and operation of the machines.

Design Activism in Industrial Design: a Critical Analysis of the Main Scolary Discourse
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Çetin, Özgür Deniz; Tunç Cox, Ayça; Tunç Cox, Ayça; 02.04. Department of Industrial Design; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of Technology
Industrial design profession has developed continuingly throughout the twentieth century, cultivated, and became prevalent. Over the course of time, industrial design has also had some negative ramifications for people and the environment, caused by socio-economic and political developments such as industrialization and globalization. Nevertheless, industrial designers have not disregarded these developments, and their consequences, instead they have been searching to find some solutions to the negative outcomes within their own profession. This endeavour has created a concentrated thread of action, which can be defined as “design activism” as an aggregate term. The renowned examples of design activism discourse first appeared in the early 1970s. Passing through various phases, it has eventually become a major subject that attracts considerable attention from design profession. Design activism is commonly addressed as an approach or a viewpoint. However, this study postulates design activism as a movement; it has been influenced by social events and movements in conjunction with socio-economic and political developments and consequently, it has evolved into a movement within the industrial design profession. This study critically analyses design activism discourse over a group of publications which constitutes the core of the discourse, both in its historical context and cumulatively. The critical analysis of the discourse discloses the ideology of design activism, its relationship with other domains and subjects, its content and context, the objectives of design activism, and the course of action that is supposed to achieve the objectives. This analysis also allows me to identify the deficiencies of design activism movement. The study is concluded with a plausible roadmap which can be followed in the near future to achieve the objectives of design activism movement.

Nowadays life styles are changing and more modern than before, for that reason peoples furniture desires are different. In this modern world; furniture using gain a meaning and play important role than before, it defines peopele.s social status and their posion in this life. Design criteria are changing and improving everyday because of this designers use different equipments for their desingns. Glass production which is diffucult to take a shape hence plastic meterials were common after World War II. Modern views and their strength transperent materials satisfied designers desires. After gained environment conclousness same plastics which are non recyling products were gave up to use. Light and high strength plastic which is a recyling material PMMA is very common to use PMMA as known as a brand which name is plexiglass in Turkey. Also this plastic materials have very effective features than others.. İn this study, transparent sheets, glass and PMMA which are used furniture production were studied. As a designer approach different examples and combine details are given.Combine details which are used furniture production were researched and PMMA panel's strength, variety and flexibility were suggested as an beneficial metarial. After the performance, for the office furnitures, there had been a suggestion on a material that brings positive reaction for its endurance, variation and elasticity to the PMMA plate which is more frequently preferred compared with glass. In the suggested material, putting galvanized matting string between the two PMMA plates resulted in stronger and more elasticity characteristics, compared to the standart PMMA plate. After the compose of the material, it had been put through durability test.As a result the material's bending durability had been calculated, too.
