Master Thesis Design Criteria for Increasing Environmental Performance of Recreational Areas: Analysis of Kordon/Izmir(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2010) Uzakgören, Yasemin; Arkon, Cemal; Arkon, Cemal; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyIn recent years, the increasing scale of urbanization and becoming more distant to our surroundings and ourselves are good reasons to analyze recreational areas. Recreational areas . a type of urban open spaces - are a necessity for human wellbeing that they provide opportunities, or openings, for certain activities, such as play, watching and walking, while the benefits associated with such activities might relate to improved mental and physical health. As planning these areas is not sufficient by itself, design criteria for increasing environmental performance of recreational areas has to be put forward, which is done by this study. This study will focus on environmentally performed urban open spaces on shorelines, and analysis will be carried out on four dimensions of the organization named The Project of Public Space (PPS,) which are formed from the seven dimensions of Lynch. Lynch has defined seven dimensions to analyze the urban space, which are Vitality, Sense, Fit, Access, Control, Efficiency, and Justice. On the other side, PPS.s dimensions are Access and Linkages, Uses and Activities, Comfort and Image, and Sociability. The case study will be about Kordon, known as Kordon 1st (or Atatürk Boulevard) which has a very dramatic history about transforming from a proposed 2x3 freeway to a recreational area. As the actual Structure Plan of Kordon starts from the viaduct shafts at Alsancak Port and ends at Cumhuriyet Square, as of the sit boundaries around the area, this study is also limited between these two landmarks. The objectives of this study have been two-fold. The first is to understand the issues and to establish a knowledge base about the transformation process of Kordon area from proposed Freeway to Recreational Area as an Urban Open Space. The second is to evaluation of Kordon as a recreational area in the light of environmental performance. This study will hopefully be helpful to increase environmental performance of other planned or proposed recreational areas.Master Thesis Noise Analysis in Urban Areas and Alternative Solutions(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Baydere, Seda; Özdemir, Semahat; Özdemir, Semahat; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyNowadays, together with growing urbanisation pertaining to the numerous developments in transportation technology and also the increase in usage of new, massive and powerful machines every field, noise has become an unavoidable by-product of our mechanised life and brought about serious hazards in our health. Noise damages people's hearing mechanism and perception; harms physiological and psychological balance; decreases performance In one's works and, all in all, it spoils the peaceful atmosphere of environment. It is impossible to avoid those mentioned effects since people are likely to encounter noise everywhere. Noise can be controlled with city planning and urban design before it starts, which reduce its harmful effects on people. Yet, noise control studies in general have been conducted to reduce the noises, which are outcome of contemporary machines. Consequently, noise control studies are not adequate to inform us about what the solutions to the community notses that exist in urban areas are. This study aims at finding out what the sources of noise are in terms of community problem and determining how it affects people. What is more, this study seeks the noise control methods which have been re-established by means of planning and which are applied in the physical space in order to reduce noise. Finally in the last of this thesis, noise pollution analysis has been made in Izmir Mustafa Kemal Sahil Boulevard, as there is formerly builtup area, the noise control methods in terms of planning have been determined in accordance with the results of the noise analysis.Master Thesis Energy efficient urban design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Peker, Zeynep; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; Serim, Muharrem Erkal; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyMy personal interest to the term "sustainability" comes up with the close examination of the concept of energy efficiency and the clear threats to our environment let me to make an intensive study on the subject. The aims of this thesis are; to define the problems urban energy consumption causes; to indicate the necessity of reducing this energy consumption; to indicate the importance of planning and urban design to achieve energy efficiency and conservation; to describe energy efficient urban design; to identify energy efficient urban design process and its variables in a convergent manner; and to provide a detailed theoretical supply to serve for further study on this subject. The theoretical knowledge given in the thesis is based upon a wide, intense and ranged literature survey. On the other hand, the pragmatic approach which is built on the combination of the theoretical pieces with a close look at Izmir example is based on the description of the influences of climate, built environment and development and planning process on energy consumption and energy conservation status of Izmir. With respect to the climatic data and development pattern of Izmir, it can be said that any attempt to provide energy efficiency should contain reduction of energy consumption both in cooling and heating however the priority differs according to the properties of the site and microclimate. Central areas of the city, due to the existence of heat island, experience overheating, lacking- of ventilation .. In these areas cooling bas priority_ Therefore it is required to reduce the heat island effect and the energy used for cooling. On the other hand, new development areas, for instance north growth axis of Izmir, have lower air temperatures because of being not completely developed. Therefore, it is required reductions in energy use for heating. Also in order to prevent the formation of heat island and to provide thermal comfort, it is required cooling strategies In summer.Energy conservation and efficiency concepts are not common in our planning apd design practice. However, energy efficiency must be achieved through a complementary tJrban planning and design process. The concept should be adopted into master plans and regulations should promote energy conservation.Master Thesis Analysis of Climate Sensitivity in Outdoor Space: Evaluating Urban Patterns in Different Climates(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2009) Mengi, Onur; Kaya Erol, Nursen; Kaya Erol, Nursen; 02.03. Department of City and Regional Planning; 02. Faculty of Architecture; 01. Izmir Institute of TechnologyMany urban design projects we produce today underestimate the design strategies as utilizing the same design criteria for every urban environment regardless their different localities. This problem leads to increasing demands for active heating, cooling and lighting systems, rising energy consumption, declining quality of urban living, environmental deterioration, and expensive and hardly maintained built-up areas. The intention of this study, on one hand, is to present a method of how to examine the climatic factors in an urban area, and on the other hand, is to reconsider urban patterns of Konak Square in Izmir and Kızılay Square in Ankara, from climate sensitive design view point. The overall aim here is to find to what extend designs of the built environment are sensitive to the climate. Specifically, the present study investigates if those urban patterns take the advantage of their particular climate while eliminating the inconveniences. In this framework, the case study was conducted in the summer period, comprising two steps; site surveying and climatic measurements. The findings were processed through the comparison of field measurements with the meteorological data, and the evaluation of the spatial structure in relation to the given comparisons. The study found that Konak Square is more sensitive to the climate comparing to Kızılay Square. The results show that urban pattern of Konak Square takes the advantage of the existing wind conditions, accelerating it throughout the site and decreases air temperature in many locations through its design.
