Wastewater treatment plants are one of the important technical infrastructure systems in cities. The location of these facilities is at least as important as themselves. Because these facilities can create negative externalities and these externalities can negatively affect people and the environment. The aim of the study is to examine the odour impacts from the wastewater treatment plants on people living around and on property values in surrounding area. In the theoretical framework, the effects of the wastewater treatment plants and similar locally unwanted land uses are examined. In this scope, some examples from the world are searched about the impacts of the negative externalities from this kind of facilities on the health of people living around, their daily life and on property values. Wastewater treatment processes, location criteria of the treatment plants in Europe and in Turkey are analyzed. News published on the internet and complaints on odour impact from wastewater treatment plants are searched both in the world and in Turkey. Compensation forms in accordance with environmental ethics and environmental justice are examined. In this scope, Southwestern Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant in İzmir is examined. Survey studies were conducted with residents living in the immediate vicinity of this facility. Interviews by questionaries with headman of Limanreis neighborhood, with an environmental engineer working in the treatment plant, and with real estate agents were conducted. At the same time, the effects of the unpleasant odour on the real estate values around the treatment plant were examined with the Hedonic Price Method. End of the study, effects of the unpleasant odour emitted from the Southwestern Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant in Narlıdere district in İzmir are revealed. It is observed that the odour influences negatively people’s daily life activities, the health of the individuals, quality of the living environment, and property values in the nearby environment.

(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2015) Sediqi, Khwaja Jawid; Özdemir, Semahat; Saygın, Mustafa Ömür; Saygın, Mustafa Ömür; Özdemir, Semahat
This study presents a GIS-based multi-criteria approach to identify the most preferred or suitable site for wind farms development in Karaburun Peninsula, İzmir. Criteria for analysis have been identified based on literature review and experts’ opinions. The selected criteria include environmental, technical, and economic as well as social factors. In order to estimate the weights or relative importance of the criteria, the pairwise comparison method in the context of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is implemented. The overall suitability of the study area is determined through the Weighted Overlay method, which is a sufficient weighted approach in geographical information system (GIS) environment. The outcome or suitability map is classified into five scored classes from the most suitable to less suitable and restricted area. On the whole, as the selection of optimal site for the wind farm development is a multi-dimensional process, this thesis intends to consider the following three significant subjects; (a) evaluating and identifying the most influential criteria for land suitability analysis of wind farms, (b) applying AHP as a multi criteria decision-making method to determine the criteria weights, (c) utilizing GIS as a tool to overlay the overall criteria and consequently to identify the potentially suitable location for the wind farms development. Regarding to the above mentioned, eight the most influential available criteria, which are consisted of wind potential, distance from preservation area, distance from settlements, forest, slope, elevation, distance from roads, and agriculture area are identified. Base on pairwise comparison different weights for each criterion is determined. Finally, by using GIS the suitability map for the study area is provided and the result compared with the existing wind farm locations.

Effects of Land-Ownership Transformation in Metropolitan Fringe Areas on Existing Urban Pattern (a Case Study of Ayrancılar-Torbalı)
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Karataş, Neslihan; Özdemir, Semahat
Parallel to urbanisation, growing cities have affected their surrounding rural settlements. This effect has resulted in a structural transformation of the rural settlements in metropolitan fringe area. With this effect, the larger city grew and affected the settlements in their fringe area and with this interaction, the social, economic and physical transformations began to take placein the fringe. One of the most important phenomena, which has been affected from these interaction and transformations is the land-ownership affair. The land-ownership has an important role especially in the physical planning process. Besides affecting the physical planning process, this phenomenon is also affected by physical planning process. The alffi of the thesis is to search for the effects of land-ownership transformation in metropolitan fringe areas on existing and potential urban pattern, and to find out if there are some negative result of this mentionet interaction. In this way, new proposals can be brought up to solve the existing and potential problems related with urban land and land-ownership phenomena, and the quality of living environment can be increased. For this study, first, literature survey related to urban sprawl and urban fringe has been accomplished and land policies in Turkey have been considered. After these researches, all of the title deed data related to case study area which is Ayrancllar Municipality (plot numbers, plot sizes, plot owners, and changing of owners) have been searched between 1968-1998 in a three decades period and been transferred into maps.At the same time, a land-use survey has prepared for the area and the construction permits and physical plans have been taken from the municipality to account for three decades period. Thus, as a result of this study, it can be said that there exist a strong relationship among land-ownership transformation process, physical plan decisions, and existing and potential urban patterns and some urban problems can be solved by adopting more meaningful policies during this changing process.

Noise Analysis in Urban Areas and Alternative Solutions
(Izmir Institute of Technology, 2000) Baydere, Seda; Özdemir, Semahat; Özdemir, Semahat
Nowadays, together with growing urbanisation pertaining to the numerous developments in transportation technology and also the increase in usage of new, massive and powerful machines every field, noise has become an unavoidable by-product of our mechanised life and brought about serious hazards in our health. Noise damages people's hearing mechanism and perception; harms physiological and psychological balance; decreases performance In one's works and, all in all, it spoils the peaceful atmosphere of environment. It is impossible to avoid those mentioned effects since people are likely to encounter noise everywhere. Noise can be controlled with city planning and urban design before it starts, which reduce its harmful effects on people. Yet, noise control studies in general have been conducted to reduce the noises, which are outcome of contemporary machines. Consequently, noise control studies are not adequate to inform us about what the solutions to the community notses that exist in urban areas are. This study aims at finding out what the sources of noise are in terms of community problem and determining how it affects people. What is more, this study seeks the noise control methods which have been re-established by means of planning and which are applied in the physical space in order to reduce noise. Finally in the last of this thesis, noise pollution analysis has been made in Izmir Mustafa Kemal Sahil Boulevard, as there is formerly builtup area, the noise control methods in terms of planning have been determined in accordance with the results of the noise analysis.
