Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 12Oil Mound Spreading and Migration With Ambient Groundwater Flow in Coarse Porous Media(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 1996) Çorapçıoplu, M. Yavuz; Tuncay, Kağan; Ceylan, B. KağanWhen a light, immiscible oil leaks above an unconfined aquifer, it spreads and forms a floating mound on the table. The oil mound migrates in the direction of ambient ground flow. In this study we present a governing equation for the migrating mound thickness by averaging the oil phase mass balance equation. Analytical and numerical solutions to an advective- dispersive type equation are presented to estimate the temporal and spatial distribution of the migrating oil mound thickness for two problems of practical importance: formation, spreading, and migration of an oil mound on the table and spreading and migration of an established layer of oil with ambient ground flow. The model results compare favorably with test data obtained by laboratory flume experiments. Although the model has some simplifying assumptions such as the absence of capillary pressure gradients, sharp saturation changes across the phase interfaces, and single mobile phase (i.e., oil flow only), it can be useful as a screening or site assessment tool because of its relative simplicity.Master Thesis Evolution of High-Rise Buildings as Shapers of Urban Space Izmir, as a Case Study(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Çelik, Zühre; Serim, Muharrem ErkalIn resent years, the construction of high-rise buildings has increased In Turkey. Unfortunately, they have been often designed without taking social, historical, environmental, symbolic and visual factors into consideration. And they have got important problems in integration with the urban space. Because the building permits are not given by based upon research and analysis. Usually, the solution at this point is to decrease the density and height limits. So they have been the most discussed issue because of the their impact on the urban environment. For these reasons, this thesis is prepared to be a guide for future research on the problems of high-rise buildings in Turkey. In this thesis context the aim is; to examine the role of high-rise buildings in the shaping of urban space and their physical, functional and social impacts on urban environment, to determine the advantages and disadvantages of high-rise buildings; and also to improve the urban planning and urban design criteria to solve the problems caused by them. This research, as a case study, attempts to evaluate existing and proposed high-rise buildings within the city context of Izmir according to their location and environmental impacts.High-rise buildings can bring great potential benefits to mankind. Instead of preventing these buildings, efforts have to be focused on maximizing its benefits. To solve the problems about high-rise buildings, it is important to consider this type of buildings in urban planning and urban design process.KEYWORDS:High-rise building, skyscraper, skyline, urban space, urban form, land mark, environmental impact, mixed use, setback, urban image, visual impact, high-rise building regulation, height control.Master Thesis Architectural Reflections of the Political Thresholds During Interwar Years (1914-1945)(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Emir, Özgür Deniz; Eyüce, ÖzenThis thesis claims that political power and ideology have the ability to transform the building forms of architecture and that power uses architecture as the ideological symbols of the regime in the interactive relationship of 'Architecture and Politics'. The study examines this relationship in Russia, Germany, Italy and Turkey which are experiencing political thresholds during the' Interwar Years' (1914-1945). The architectural reflections of political thresholds have been discussed through architectural trends, styles, built environment and urbanism. Formal and conceptual analyses and readings have been performed in order to determine the architectural transformations and variations that are parallel to political developments, architectural trends before and after the political thresholds have been analyzed comparatively. The concepts that exist similarly both in political ideologies and architectural end-products have been studied with the aim of finding the interaction between 'Architecture and Politics'. These analyses have led to a conclusion that political interference, transforms architectural trends due to its ideologies; monumentality, grandeur, axiality, symmetry order and hierarchy as a result exist in the created architectural language due to this political interference.Master Thesis Importance of Play Areas in Child Development and Design Guidelines for Play Areas(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Kiper, Nilgün; Süel, AkınPlay is the basic requirement of a child. It is important for his physical, psychological and social development. Today, especially children between the ages 2-12 cannot use outdoor spaces of the urban environment as effective as they should. This problem is related with technological development, changes in life styles and social and physical environment. Play areas provided in modem urban environment are also in adequate to meet their demands. Limiting the activities of children especially at exterior spaces cause problems in their social development. A child who is forced to live in interior spaces grows up as a consuming individual, without experiencing sharing, social supporting and production. By considering the development of the child and his relation with space; the study aims to define the play areas of preschool and school age children from house entrance to playgrounds, and to determine design criteria to provide effective use of play areas in existing and developing housing area.Master Thesis The Spatial Analsis of Public Squares in a Rapidly Changing Social Setting Konak Square as a Case Study(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Aşıkoğlu, Gülay; Serim, Muharrem ErkalSquares as gathering places in cities have arose from the need for coming together which is necessary for the continuation of social life. Because of this, squares have an important place in urban life. In times, squares like the other urban spaces, have showed a change according to religious beliefs, economic and politic life of society andhuman needs. In spite of this, squares, in every age, act as an important element to provide social experience and occurrence of city identity. Urban public squares provide an effective ground for human interaction and communication. Therefore, they are important to determine the social character of cities and cultural identity. Urban public squares can establish a proper stage for spontaneous social experience and multiple human relationship in a direct relation with the environment. Because of this, they provide more opportunity for social experience than a barely sheltered place of our so called modem society. In contrast to many European cities, there is not a well established public square understanding which provides social experience and gives an identity to the city in our country. Although the squares have become a necessity for our society due to rapid structural changes in Turkish social life, they are still neglected by our current urban design practices. For, this reason, this study focuses on the spatial analysis of public squares in a rapidly changing social setting. Thus the study area of " public squares" is chosen as a research topic because of its importance in our society as well as in urban design. This research also aims to address the need for public squares in our society and contains a study in an urban design project in Konak izmir through an analysis of the characteristics of the square. KEY WORDS: Square, Space, Place, Public Space, Plaza, Urban Space, Enclosure, Continuity, Diversity, Vitality, Perception, Spatial Perception.Master Thesis In the Changing Social Structure Problems of Women and Children Who Are in Need of Protection Related With Urban Physicial Structure and Proposal for Solution of This Problem(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Girgin, Işın; Özdemir, SemahatThe main aim of this thesis is to find solutions to the problems of children who are in need of protection, especially to the problems involving their physical and social environment. In order these children to be integrated into the urban environment, their problems are needed to be solved by new planning regulations, new planning policies and the children's village being a new type of urban land use should be proposed in our city plans. In this context, also the location criteria, area requirements and design guidelines are developed and a prototype plan of a children's village; which is an alternative living environment, is proposed.Master Thesis Energy efficient urban design(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1998) Peker, Zeynep; Serim, Muharrem ErkalMy personal interest to the term "sustainability" comes up with the close examination of the concept of energy efficiency and the clear threats to our environment let me to make an intensive study on the subject. The aims of this thesis are; to define the problems urban energy consumption causes; to indicate the necessity of reducing this energy consumption; to indicate the importance of planning and urban design to achieve energy efficiency and conservation; to describe energy efficient urban design; to identify energy efficient urban design process and its variables in a convergent manner; and to provide a detailed theoretical supply to serve for further study on this subject. The theoretical knowledge given in the thesis is based upon a wide, intense and ranged literature survey. On the other hand, the pragmatic approach which is built on the combination of the theoretical pieces with a close look at Izmir example is based on the description of the influences of climate, built environment and development and planning process on energy consumption and energy conservation status of Izmir. With respect to the climatic data and development pattern of Izmir, it can be said that any attempt to provide energy efficiency should contain reduction of energy consumption both in cooling and heating however the priority differs according to the properties of the site and microclimate. Central areas of the city, due to the existence of heat island, experience overheating, lacking- of ventilation .. In these areas cooling bas priority_ Therefore it is required to reduce the heat island effect and the energy used for cooling. On the other hand, new development areas, for instance north growth axis of Izmir, have lower air temperatures because of being not completely developed. Therefore, it is required reductions in energy use for heating. Also in order to prevent the formation of heat island and to provide thermal comfort, it is required cooling strategies In summer.Energy conservation and efficiency concepts are not common in our planning apd design practice. However, energy efficiency must be achieved through a complementary tJrban planning and design process. The concept should be adopted into master plans and regulations should promote energy conservation.Master Thesis The Effect of Car Mass on (internal and External) Safety With a Case Study on Concept Family Car(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Mızıkacı, Sinan; Seçkin, YavuzTransportation means are always of importance to people due to their functions. Originally, a vehicle in terms of a means of transportation has been thought as only a device what takes people from one place to another point. But with considering both occupant being transported and vehicle means of transportation since their inextricable relations, vehicle has become significantly considerable within its design.Prodded by industrial revolution, especially after introducing the first mechanized mode of vehicle in 1769, the technological advantages have highly intensely been used in automotive, and also now. Primarily, within that advantages, even all efforts providing for retention of vehicle during a crash to protect occupants from the injury risk have been zeroed in on for only the one objective: to design vehicles with a high capability of safety. In this thesis, We consider that people in scale unit as family for vehicle design of the need. Environment for the family vehicle is thought a place encircling metropolis wherein the people as grouped lives out and wishing that it was so pleasant place, just a few miles away from the city, taking advantages of working at home. Moreover, we are in making a think of vehicle design for family that ought to contain the conventional signs more within global perceptiveness as small, but not compressed down since the generation becomes huger in size by years, and finally has enough space of interior regarding ergonomical and anatomical requirements. Under the definitions for creating the concept family vehicle within limits, the project aims to present most apropos model, and assumes to allow the person to drive and to move on it in safest position. In this paper, in the light of above, we will set out to clarify the safety features of vehicle structure for Family Vehicle, and with respect to that each connective parameter in the boundary of freedom will be clarified.Master Thesis Urban design for disabled people(Izmir Institute of Technology, 1999) Gökçen, Tankut; Özdemir, SemahatDefining outdoor space dimensions and standards in respect to disabled people's requirements and redesign of selected outdoor space components in respect to these standards is the main subject of this research. It is important that just "outdoor open space" is the main concern of the research. For this reason at first, starting point of the research, "Universal Design" explained with its guidelines and principles in detail, then, importance of disabled people's participation in social and economic life and reasons of increase in their population is emphasised. After, general terminology, definitions, and dimensions of outdoor space components and disabled people's are given. Outdoor space components are defined and then, their design and maintenance guidelines, standards are given. At the end, Izmir City Centre is selected as a project area and absence and faults of existing outdoor built environment in respect to disabled people requirements defined . In project, selected outdoor space components that are not correspond standards are redesigned in accordance with design guidelines and standards.
