Article Citation - WoS: 40Citation - Scopus: 44Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Forced Convection in a Double Skin Façade by Using Nodal Network Approach for Istanbul(Elsevier Ltd., 2019) İnan, Tuğba; Başaran, TahsinIn this study, temperature distribution and heat transfer through the cavity of a double skin façade (DSF) was investigated in the laboratory environment and analyzed numerically by using nodal network approach. The verification of the nodal network method was conducted by using data from the steady-state experiments and the same method was applied for the climate of Istanbul, Turkey under unsteady outside boundary conditions. Furthermore, heat gain and loss values in DSF for January and July were calculated and compared with single skin façade (SSF) application for different directions of the façades. The results were given for a day and a working time period of the office buildings by using monthly average daily climate data. Distinction working hours were more convenient to investigate the energy performance of DSF because of solar radiation effect. Using DSF in all directions, the cooling loads decreased up to 26% comparing to the SSF. DSF system was disadvantageous comparing to the SSF for January. However, it was shown that the heated air in the cavity could be used for preheating process of air in a HVAC system for winter period.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Dovecotes in Kayabağ Village: an Assessment of Landscape and Architectural Characteristics(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2020) İnceköse, ÜlküThe dovecotes of Kayseri-Gesi stand out as unique examples of indigenous architecture of Anatolia. They are considered significant elements of the rural landscape. The purpose of the construction, the constructional and spatial characteristics peculiar to these dovecotes, make them an important element of global cultural and architectural heritage. Dovecotes that are built upon rocks, with mere building stones provided from the same rocks, look like a shaped form of the topography itself. This is very much to do with the geological features of the Cappadocia Region where Kayseri is located. In terms of construction techniques and spatial organization, the dramatic differences in the dovecotes’ underground and aboveground parts make them even more outstanding. This research is based on the field studies conducted in the dovecotes of Kayabağ. The landscape was studied in all aspects and each dovecote is studied for its placement, topographical interactions, plan and section typologies, materiality and construction techniques. The structural problems stemmed from the geological features and the deterioration caused by external factors are taken into consideration. The study concludes with an overall approach for preservation, sustainability and conservation process of the heritage landscape of Dovecotes [Güvercinlik] of Kayabağ.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Analysis of the Relationship Between Daylight Illuminance and Cognitive, Affective and Physiological Changes in Visual Display Terminal Workers(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Öner, Merve; Kazanasmaz, Zehra Tuğçe; Leccese, F.; Salvadori, G.This study explored the impact of daylight illuminance on cognitive load during visual display terminal use by means of various physiological, performance and subjective measures. Repeated-measures design was adopted to identify the impact of variations in daylight levels that were manipulated through the shading system configurations (shading-on; shading-off). A total of 30 subjects performed visual and cognitive demanding tests. Performance measures were supported by subjective data and eye-related measures during the experimental analysis. Results revealed that the use of a shading system had positive impact on sustained attention. Concerning ocular measures, percentage of eye closure values showed opposite tendencies among vigilance and sustained attention demanding tests. Eye aspect ratio-max and blink duration were significantly correlated with reported glare sensation. In all tests, eye aspect ratio-max was found significantly higher in lower illuminances. Search velocity was significantly correlated with ocular variables in higher illuminances whereas sustained attention showed an opposite trend. This, initially, explains that even slight differences in daylight illuminance might have distinctive effects on the relationship between different groups of assessment variables while measuring cognitive load. Daylight was the source of illumination being considered as the most significant and preferred one. A total of 26 participants performed visual and cognitive demanding tasks as well as providing subjective alertness, performance and visual evaluations in a full-scale mock-up VDT workstation. Two trials (with and without shading system) were executed during one experimental session. Results revealed that the use of a shading system improves the performance of a user on colour-naming task requiring sustained attention, while no differential effects were observed on tasks involving other cognitive skills such as search velocity and vigilance. Within-subject performance differences were more pronounced during morning hours. Higher performance was reported in some cognitive tests when the subjective sensation of visual discomfort was lower.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 8Way-Finding Strategies of Blind Persons in Urban Scale(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2017) Kan Kılıç, Didem; Doğan, FehmiThe aim of this study was to determine whether urban environments with different prominent sensory inputs have an impact on the way-finding strategies of blind people and to identify these impacts, where applicable. We specifically investigated how blind people use their senses to compensate for the lack of visual information and how the priority of senses changes according to the urban context. The participants of the study consisted of nine congenitally blind individuals and the study took place in two urban settings: a dense urban district, Kemeralti district in İzmir; and an urban park, the İzmir Fair Park. During the learning phase, a first trial along the selected routes was conducted for each participant individually along with one of the researchers. In the test phase, the participants were requested to re-walk the route and verbally report the environmental cues they attended to. The participants’ verbal reports were recorded and transcripts of the recordings were coded according to the environmental sensory inputs. In addition, the short-term memory of each participant was also evaluated. The results show that the characteristics of the urban environment seem to have an impact on way-finding strategies of blind individuals. It was found that the sound of the city and the echo from the environment are the most important factors for blind participants in the dense urban environment. Environmental boundaries provided echoes and gave a sense of enclosure that helped them orient themselves, whereas, in the park environment, the sense of enclosure was not enhanced due to a lack of boundaries in the environment.Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 21Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Forced Convection in a Double Skin Façade(MDPI Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, 2017) İnan, Tuğba; Başaran, Tahsin; Erek, AytunçFlow and heat transfer of the air cavity between two glass façades designed in the box window type of double skin façade (DSF) was evaluated in a test room which was set up for measurements in the laboratory environment and analyzed under different working conditions by using a computational fluid dynamics tool. Using data from the experimental studies, the verification of the numerical studies was conducted and the air flow and heat transfer in the cavity between the two glass façades were examined numerically in detail. The depth to height of the cavity, the aspect ratio, was changed between 0.10 and 0.16, and was studied for three different flow velocities. Reynolds and average Nusselt numbers ranging from 28,000 to 56,500 and 134 to 272, respectively, were calculated and a non-dimensional correlation between Reynolds and Nusselt numbers was constructed to evaluate the heat transfer from the cavity (except inlet and outlet sections) air to the inside environment and it could be used the box window type of DSF applications having relatively short cavities.Article Citation - WoS: 36Citation - Scopus: 46Corporate Social Responsibility in Construction Industry: a Comparative Study Between Uk and Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016) Ulutaş Duman, Dilek; Giritli, Heyecan; McDermott, PeterPurpose – Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has evolved to an important agenda for many industries and its scope has been widened from the responsible business to strategic decisions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of CSR from the perspective of construction industry by questioning CSR awareness, CSR activities and CSR integration with a comparative case study between UK and Turkey. Design/methodology/approach – Conducting comparative and qualitative research using a case study methodology, this study sets the context for understanding differences in these two countries as to how CSR is perceived and put into practice by selected case firms. Findings – The results revealed that construction companies are aware of the increasing importance of the CSR; however, company scale and the characteristics of the country have great impact on CSR preferences. Despite the differences in the approaches all firms take with regard to CSR domains and CSR types, ethical domain and the social orientation have become prominent for CSR initiatives in both the UK and Turkey. Thus the energy performance of buildings should be improved in the early stages of design. This article describes an approach for developing guidelines on sensitive and robust design parameters for the present, the 2020s, the 2050s and the 2080s. Such guidelines can help architects to design low-rise apartment buildings that require less energy for various purposes, such as heating or cooling. The article consists of a general literature review, interviews with architects, the generation of case-specific information and a mock-up presentation and a meeting with professionals. An example guideline that aims to reduce annual cooling energy loads under global warming in low-rise apartment buildings located in hot-humid climates is presented to demonstrate how the proposed approach can be applied. For this guideline, case-specific information was generated, and a global sensitivity analysis based on Monte Carlo Analysis and the Latin Hypercube Sampling technique was performed. The results show that the suggested approach is feasible and could be used to provide helpful information to architects during the design of low-rise apartment buildings with high energy performance. The most sensitive design parameters that affect annual cooling energy loads in low-rise apartment buildings were natural ventilation, window area, and the solar heat-gain coefficient (SHGC) of the glazing. The results are relevant for the present, the 2020s, the 2050s and the 2080s.Article Citation - Scopus: 6Faculty Office Buildings as Work Environments: Spatial Configuration, Social Interaction, Collaboration and Sense of Community(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2013) Kılıç Çalğıcı, Pınar; Czerkauer-Yamu, Claudia; Çil, ElaWe aim to identify the role of spatial configuration in the social interaction, collaboration and sense of community at academia. We focus on the spatial configuration of three school buildings used by three different departments within the campus of a university in Izmir and utilize both spatial and social data. We have analyzed spatial data by Visual Graph Analysis (VGA) and searched for the spatial integration of the buildings with different plan typologies, but all have cell-based office configuration, which constitute linear plans with atrium, L-shaped and square with repeating floor plans. Social data is gathered by a questionnaire survey that is conducted with faculty members enquiring their office location in relation to spatial integration, sense of community, interaction and collaboration. We use correlation and regression analyses for the analyses of social data. Findings suggest that collaboration is independent of the plan typology but spatial integration promotes interaction and sense of community.Article Limits of Re-Writing and Legibility of Transformations in Istanbul's Historic Peninsula: an Interpretation Inspired From the Wabi-Sabi Philosophy(İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, 2013) Taraz, NazlıThe Japanese philosophy Wabi regards beauty as the results of imperfections and changes of daily life, and Sabi teaching supports this attitude by advocating the idea that life experiences and accumulation of years are important factors increasing beauty. From the viewpoint of Wabi- Sabi, urban transformation is an inevitable and imperfect activity that, nevertheless, always progresses to beauty. In this article, the Wabi-Sabi philosophy will be related to the event’s theme “imperfection” and life experiences to analyze Istanbul as “the palimpsest city”. The discussion will be carried out step by step from the first urban settlement at the Historic Peninsula and the following transformations in the light of Wabi-Sabi philosophy, by tracing the continuities and changes at the civic heart of the city.
