    Effects of Reactor Pressure and Inlet Temperature on N-butane/Dimethyl Ether Oxidation and the Formation Pathways of the Aromatic Species

    Oxidation of n-butane/dimethyl ether (DME)/O2/Ar system was studied by chemical kinetic modeling in a tubular reactor operated adiabatically and at constant pressure. Effects of the reactor pressure on the formation of various major, minor, and trace oxidation products were investigated for two different pressures (1 and 5 atm) and at six different inlet temperature values (700, 800, 900, 1100, 1300, and 1500 K). The analysis was carried out for two different concentrations of dimethyl ether in the inlet fuel mixture (20 and 50 mol %). Higher pressure (5 atm) resulted in higher mole fractions of methane, vinylacetylene, and cyclopentadiene; and lower mole fractions of formaldehyde, acetylene, acetaldehyde, ethane, propargyl, and propane. The mole fractions of CO and CO2 were not affected considerably by the pressure change. The main formation routes of benzene were developed at two different inlet temperature values (1100 and 1300 K), and the main precursors participating in these routes were found to be propargyl, propene, and diacetylene. A skeletal mechanism was developed for the oxidation of n-butane/DME mixture from the detailed mechanism by reduction of the elementary reactions by 79%, and it was tested for accuracy by comparison with the data from the literature.

    Indoor Air Quality in a Restaurant Kitchen Using Margarine for Deep-Frying

    Indoor air quality has a great impact on human health. Cooking, in particular frying, is one of the most important sources of indoor air pollution. Indoor air CO, CO2, particulate matter (PM), and volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations, including aldehydes, were measured in the kitchen of a small establishment where a special deep-frying margarine was used. The objective was to assess occupational exposure concentrations for cooks of such restaurants. While individual VOC and PM2.5 concentrations were measured before, during, and after frying events using active sampling, TVOC, PM10, CO, CO2, temperature, and relative humidity were continuously monitored through the whole period. VOC and aldehyde concentrations did not increase to considerable levels with deep-frying compared to the background and public indoor environment levels, whereas PM10 increased significantly (1.85 to 6.6 folds). The average PM2.5 concentration of the whole period ranged between 76 and 249 μg/m3. Hence, considerable PM exposures could occur during deep-frying with the special margarine, which might be sufficiently high to cause health effects on cooks considering their chronic occupational exposures.

    Artificial Neural Network Prediction of Tropospheric Ozone Concentrations in Istanbul, Turkey

    Tropospheric (ground-level) ozone has adverse effects on human health and environment. In this study, next day's maximum 1-h average ozone concentrations in Istanbul were predicted using multi-layer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural networks (ANNs). Nine meteorological parameters and nine air pollutant concentrations were utilized as inputs. The total 578 datasets were divided into three groups: training, cross-validation, and testing. When all the 18 inputs were used, the best performance was obtained with a network containing one hidden layer with 24 neurons. The transfer function was hyperbolic tangent. The correlation coefficient (R), mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), and index of agreement or Willmott's Index (d2) for the testing data were 0.90, 8.78 μg/m3, 11.15μg/m3, and 0.95, respectively. Sensitivity analysis has indicated that the persistence information (current day's maximum and average ozone concentrations), NO concentration, average temperature, PM10, maximum temperature, sunshine time, wind direction, and solar radiation were the most important input parameters. The values of R, MAE, RMSE, and d2 did not change considerably for the MLP model using only these nine inputs. The performances of the MLP models were compared with those of regression models (i.e., multiple linear regression and multiple non-linear regression). It has been found that there was no significant difference between the ANN and regression modeling techniques for the forecasting of ozone concentrations in Istanbul. Tropospheric ozone has adverse effects on human health and environment. Here, the next-day's maximum 1-h average ozone concentrations in Istanbul were predicted using multi-layer perceptron type artificial neural networks (MLP-ANNs).     Activated Carbon Adsorption of Fuel Oxygenates Mtbe and Etbe From Water

    The aqueous phase adsorption of fuel oxygenates methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) onto commercially available granular activated carbon (GAC; Norit GAC 1240) was investigated in a batch system at 27°C. The oxygenate concentrations were determined by headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses. The experimental data were used with four two-parameter isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) and two kinetic models (pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order) to determine equilibrium and kinetic parameters. Considering the correlation coefficient and root mean square error, Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm showed better fit with the equilibrium data for MTBE. However, the performances of Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich models were comparable for ETBE. The adsorption capacities were calculated as 5.50 and 6.92 mg/g for MTBE and ETBE, respectively, at an equilibrium solution concentration of 1 mg/L using Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm. The differences between the model predictions and experimental data were similar for the pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order kinetic models. Gibbs free-energy changes of adsorption were found to be -22.59 and -28.55 kJ/mol for MTBE-GAC and ETBE-GAC systems, respectively, under the experimental conditions studied.

    Seasonal Variation in Drinking Water Concentrations of Disinfection By-Products in Izmir and Associated Human Health Risks

    Seasonal variation in concentrations of two different disinfection by-product groups, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetonitriles (HANs), was investigated in tap water samples collected from five sampling points (one groundwater and four surface water sources) in İzmir, Turkey. Estimates of previously published carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks through oral exposure to THMs were re-evaluated using a probabilistic approach that took the seasonal concentration variation into account. Chloroform, bromoform, dibromochloromethane and dichloroacetonitrile were the most frequently detected compounds. Among these, chloroform was detected with the highest concentrations ranging from 0.03 to 98.4 μg/L. In tap water, at the groundwater supplied sampling point, brominated species, bromoform and dibromoacetonitrile, were detected at the highest levels most probably due to bromide ion intrusion from seawater. The highest total THM and total HAN concentrations were detected in spring while the lowest in summer and fall. The annual average total THM concentration measured at one of the surface water supplied sampling points exceeded the USEPA's limit of 80 μg/L. While all non-carcinogenic risks due to exposure to THMs in İzmir drinking water were negligible, carcinogenic risk levels associated with bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane were higher than one in million.

    Occurrence, Oral Exposure and Risk Assessment of Volatile Organic Compounds in Drinking Water for Izmir

    Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured in the drinking water in Province of İzmir, Turkey, and associated health risks due to ingestion of these compounds were investigated using population weighted random samples. A total of 100 houses were visited in different districts of İzmir and drinking water samples were collected from consumers' drinking water source. Questionnaires were administered to one participant in each house to determine demographics and drinking water consumption rates. Oral exposure and risks were estimated for each participant and İzmir population by deterministic and probabilistic approaches, respectively. The four trihalomethane (THM) species (i.e., chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform), benzene, toluene, p-xylene, and naphthalene were the most frequently detected VOCs with concentrations ranging from below detection limit to 35 μg/l. The risk estimates were found to be less than the values reported in the literature with few exceptions. Noncarcinogenic risks attributable to ingestion of VOCs for İzmir population were negligible, whereas the mean carcinogenic risk estimates for bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane were above the de minimis level of one in a million (10-6). For all VOCs, the concentrations measured in metropolitan area were greater than those in other districts. All THM species were detected in higher concentrations in tap water, whereas nontap water contained more benzene, toluene, p-xylene, and naphthalene. Therefore, the concentrations of the latter four compounds and associated risks increased with increasing income and education level since bottled water was used in larger proportions within these subgroups. The results of this study showed that oral exposure to drinking water contaminants and associated risks may be higher than the acceptable levels even if the concentrations fall below the standards.
