Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Energy Performance Assessment in Terms of Primary Energy and Exergy Analyses of the Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Hancıoğlu Kuzgunkaya, EbruThis paper concerns with the energy analysis (based on primary energy) and exergy analysis of Narlıdere Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center (NNHRC) in İzmir, Turkey that was chosen as a sample public building. The Center services as a nursing and rehabilitation center for the aged and it also includes a geriatric division operating as a hospital. The Center was analyzed using the actual energy consumption data derived from several energy audits. Energy efficiency (according to the primary energy ratio) and exergy efficiency of the facility were calculated to be 59% and 14%, respectively. The results have indicated that the exergy efficiencies of space heating and cooling have the lowest values compared with the other units of facility. Specific primary energy consumption and specific exergy consumption of the facility were found to be 271.91 kWh/m2 year and 290.23 kWh/m2 year, respectively. Sustainability index value of the overall NNHRC was found to be 1.621.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Aerodynamic Optimization of Through-Flow Design Model of a High By-Pass Transonic Aero-Engine Fan Using Genetic Algorithm(SAGE Publications Inc., 2018) Kor, Orçun; Acarer, Sercan; Özkol, ÜnverThis study deals with aerodynamic optimization of a high by-pass transonic aero-engine fan module in a through-flow inverse design model at cruise condition. To the authors’ best knowledge, although the literature contains through-flow optimization of the simplified cases of compressors and turbines, an optimization study targeting the more elaborate case of combined transonic fan and splitter through-flow model is not considered in the literature. Such a through-flow optimization of a transonic fan, combined with bypass and core streams separated by an aerodynamically shaped flow splitter, possesses significant challenges to any optimizer, due to highly non-linear nature of the problem and the high number of constraints, including the fulfillment of the targeted bypass ratio. It is the aim of this study to consider this previously untouched area in detail and therefore present a more sophisticated and accurate optimization environment for actual bypass fan systems. An in-house optimization code using genetic algorithm is coupled with a previously developed in-house through-flow solver which is using a streamline curvature technique and a set of in-house calibrated empirical models for incidence, deviation, loss and blockage. As the through-flow models are the backbone of turbomachinery design, and great majority of design decisions are taken in this phase, such a study is assessed to result in significant guidelines to the gas turbine community.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Analysis of the Relationship Between Daylight Illuminance and Cognitive, Affective and Physiological Changes in Visual Display Terminal Workers(SAGE Publications Inc., 2019) Öner, Merve; Kazanasmaz, Zehra Tuğçe; Leccese, F.; Salvadori, G.This study explored the impact of daylight illuminance on cognitive load during visual display terminal use by means of various physiological, performance and subjective measures. Repeated-measures design was adopted to identify the impact of variations in daylight levels that were manipulated through the shading system configurations (shading-on; shading-off). A total of 30 subjects performed visual and cognitive demanding tests. Performance measures were supported by subjective data and eye-related measures during the experimental analysis. Results revealed that the use of a shading system had positive impact on sustained attention. Concerning ocular measures, percentage of eye closure values showed opposite tendencies among vigilance and sustained attention demanding tests. Eye aspect ratio-max and blink duration were significantly correlated with reported glare sensation. In all tests, eye aspect ratio-max was found significantly higher in lower illuminances. Search velocity was significantly correlated with ocular variables in higher illuminances whereas sustained attention showed an opposite trend. This, initially, explains that even slight differences in daylight illuminance might have distinctive effects on the relationship between different groups of assessment variables while measuring cognitive load. Daylight was the source of illumination being considered as the most significant and preferred one. A total of 26 participants performed visual and cognitive demanding tasks as well as providing subjective alertness, performance and visual evaluations in a full-scale mock-up VDT workstation. Two trials (with and without shading system) were executed during one experimental session. Results revealed that the use of a shading system improves the performance of a user on colour-naming task requiring sustained attention, while no differential effects were observed on tasks involving other cognitive skills such as search velocity and vigilance. Within-subject performance differences were more pronounced during morning hours. Higher performance was reported in some cognitive tests when the subjective sensation of visual discomfort was lower.Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 26Urban Crisis: ‘limits To Governance of Alienation’(SAGE Publications Inc., 2017) Bayırbağ, Mustafa Kemal; Penpecioğlu, MehmetThis article aims to develop a comparative framework of analysis to study urban crises, arguing that there is a need to establish the analytical links between ‘everyday life and systemic trends and struggles’, and thus to tie together the insights produced by ‘particularistic accounts’. It examines urban crises as political phenomena and brings the Marxist notion of ‘alienation’ to the centre of attention. We argue that ‘alienation’ – as a universal mechanism facilitating capital accumulation process via dispossession, and as negative mental/emotional implications of dispossession, is useful to establish those analytical links. We identify two domains, urban economic structure and urban political system, where alienation is contained. Public authorities deploy various containment strategies in these domains to govern alienation, and urban crises occur when these strategies fail. This specialized site is called “tumor microenvironment” and has a composition of heterogenous materials. The immune cells are also residents of this stromal, cancerous, and inflammatory environment, and their types, densities, or functional differences are one of the key factors that mediate the fate of a tumor. T cells as a vital part of the immune system also are a component of tumor microenvironment, and their roles have been elucidated in many studies. The experiences of women and men muhtars-elected resident-officers of neighbourhoods-in Izmir (Turkey) in 2008 provided the data. It appeared that political participation via neighbourhood offices is shaped by (in)formal mechanisms of power relations that have been historically male-dominated with patriarchal rule(r)s at the neighbourhood level and with clientelist and statist ones at multiple scales. Men were supported greatly by their gendered neighbourhood-based networks. Women with male backing, including of incumbent muhtars, had better chances. All of the muhtars aimed at guiding residents through the governmental system, experiencing that the centralised state undermined muhtars' representative roles. By following certain tactics a few, mostly women, muhtars were persistent enough to participate in the governmental system that operated through patron-client relationships.Article Citation - WoS: 20Citation - Scopus: 28Shifts in Value Chain Governance and Upgrading in the European Periphery of Automotive Production: Evidence From Bursa,turkey(SAGE Publications Inc., 2011) Özatağan, GüldemThis paper examines shifts in value chain governance and upgrading in the automotive component production node of Bursa in Turkey. Component suppliers in Bursa have gained design and product-development competences, one result of which is that European and global firms have turned to the creation of modular value chains for the sourcing of components from these suppliers. This paper considers the implications of the insertion of Turkish suppliers into modular value chains on suppliers' upgrading, and reveals that, despite the diffusion of design and product-development competences to suppliers in Bursa, cutting-edge innovation activities such as marketing and branding continue to remain the domain of the lead firms. It is argued that although Turkish suppliers seem to be successful in upgrading to take on design and product-development tasks, this has been more due to the willingness of global lead firms to relinquish these functions than to the success of Turkish suppliers in encroaching upon these once core competences of their customers. It is concluded that power asymmetries in global automotive value chains continue to exist, and that lead firms continue to have a major influence on the type of upgrading strategies that are open to their suppliers.Article Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 28Thermal Analysis of the Domed Vernacular Houses of Harran, Turkey(SAGE Publications Inc., 2011) Başaran, TahsinMinimum energy consumption and economic efficiency using local and recyclable materials is essential for achieving sustainability, considering the depletion of global energy sources. The Anatolian Peninsula presents a diverse range of local building construction techniques accumulated over centuries, which meet the criteria mentioned above. Due to richness of climatic variety and the influence of many civilisations throughout history, Anatolian regions reflect this richness in their respective solutions to building construction. Built mainly out of brick and stone, mortared and plastered by mud, the domed vernacular houses of Harran, a small town in the province of Urfa in the hot arid climate of southeastern Anatolia, are one of the best examples that deserve attention with respect to minimum energy consumption. In this study, the thermal performance of the "Harran house" as a vernacular type was analysed. For this purpose, temperatures inside and outside a Harran house complex with relative humidity variations were measured. In addition, for investigating the domed houses' thermal behaviour, temperature measurements at different surfaces and media were recorded. The solar chimney effect obtained from the dome and the importance of the thermal mass of the square base of the house were also evaluated. The paper examines Brisbane's recent progress towards establishing knowledge community precincts that are critical creative urban environments to attract and retain global investment and talent. This paper also discusses major challenges Brisbane is experiencing during the implementation of its state- and city-wide knowledge-based urban development strategies.
