    Measurement of Electroweak Production of a W Boson in Association With Two Jets in Proton–proton Collisions at √s=13te

    A measurement is presented of electroweak (EW) production of a W boson in association with two jets in proton–proton collisions at s=13Te. The data sample was recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1. The measurement is performed for the ℓνjj final state (with ℓν indicating a lepton–neutrino pair, and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in a kinematic region defined by invariant mass mjj>120Ge and transverse momenta pTj>25Ge. The cross section of the process is measured in the electron and muon channels yielding σEW(Wjj)=6.23±0.12(stat)±0.61(syst)pb per channel, in agreement with leading-order standard model predictions. The additional hadronic activity of events in a signal-enriched region is studied, and the measurements are compared with predictions. The final state is also used to perform a search for anomalous trilinear gauge couplings. Limits on anomalous trilinear gauge couplings associated with dimension-six operators are given in the framework of an effective field theory. The corresponding 95% confidence level intervals are -2.3<cWWW/Λ2<2.5Te-2, -8.8<cW/Λ2<16Te-2, and -45<cB/Λ2<46Te-2. These results are combined with the CMS EW Zjj analysis, yielding the constraint on the cW W W coupling: -1.8<cWWW/Λ2<2.0Te-2. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    Measurements of T T ¯ H Production and the Cp Structure of the Yukawa Interaction Between the Higgs Boson and Top Quark in the Diphoton Decay Channel

    The first observation of the tt¯H process in a single Higgs boson decay channel with the full reconstruction of the final state (H→γγ) is presented, with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations (σ). The CP structure of Higgs boson couplings to fermions is measured, resulting in an exclusion of the pure CP-odd structure of the top Yukawa coupling at 3.2σ. The measurements are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1. The cross section times branching fraction of the tt¯H process is measured to be σtt¯HBγγ=1.56-0.32+0.34 fb, which is compatible with the standard model prediction of 1.13-0.11+0.08 fb. The fractional contribution of the CP-odd component is measured to be fCPHtt=0.00±0.33. © 2020 CERN.

    Search for Physics Beyond the Standard Model in Events With Jets and Two Same-Sign or at Least Three Charged Leptons in Proton-Proton Collisions at √s=13tev

    A data sample of events from proton-proton collisions with at least two jets, and two isolated same-sign or three or more charged leptons, is studied in a search for signatures of new physics phenomena. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed using a total of 168 signal regions defined using several kinematic variables. The properties of the events are found to be consistent with the expectations from standard model processes. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on cross sections for the pair production of gluinos or squarks for various decay scenarios in the context of supersymmetric models conserving or violating R parity. The observed lower mass limits are as large as 2.1TeV for gluinos and 0.9TeV for top and bottom squarks. To facilitate reinterpretations, model-independent limits are provided in a set of simplified signal regions. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    Studies of Charm Quark Diffusion Inside Jets Using Pb-Pb and Pp Collisions at Snn =5.02 Tev

    The first study of charm quark diffusion with respect to the jet axis in heavy ion collisions is presented. The measurement is performed using jets with pTjet>60 GeV/c and D0 mesons with pTD>4 GeV/c in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sNN=5.02 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The radial distribution of D0 mesons with respect to the jet axis is sensitive to the production mechanisms of the meson, as well as to the energy loss and diffusion processes undergone by its parent parton inside the strongly interacting medium produced in Pb-Pb collisions. When compared to Monte Carlo event generators, the radial distribution in pp collisions is found to be well described by pythia, while the slope of the distribution predicted by sherpa is steeper than that of the data. In Pb-Pb collisions, compared to the pp results, the D0 meson distribution for 4<pTD<20 GeV/c hints at a larger distance on average with respect to the jet axis, reflecting a diffusion of charm quarks in the medium created in heavy ion collisions. At higher pTD, the Pb-Pb and pp radial distributions are found to be similar. © 2020 CERN.

    Search for Heavy Resonances That Decay Into a Vector Boson and a Higgs Boson in Hadronic Final States at √s=13tev

    A search for heavy resonances with masses above 1TeV, decaying to final states containing a vector boson and a Higgs boson, is presented. The search considers hadronic decays of the vector boson, and Higgs boson decays to b quarks. The decay products are highly boosted, and each collimated pair of quarks is reconstructed as a single, massive jet. The analysis is performed using a data sample collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1. The data are consistent with the background expectation and are used to place limits on the parameters of a theoretical model with a heavy vector triplet. In the benchmark scenario with mass-degenerate W′ and Z ′ bosons decaying predominantly to pairs of standard model bosons, for the first time heavy resonances for masses as high as 3.3TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, setting the most stringent constraints to date on such states decaying into a vector boson and a Higgs boson. © 2017, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    A data sample of events from proton–proton collisions with two isolated same-sign leptons, missing transverse momentum, and jets is studied in a search for signatures of new physics phenomena by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1, and a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The properties of the events are consistent with expectations from standard model processes, and no excess yield is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are set on cross sections for the pair production of gluinos, squarks, and same-sign top quarks, as well as top-quark associated production of a heavy scalar or pseudoscalar boson decaying to top quarks, and on the standard model production of events with four top quarks. The observed lower mass limits are as high as 1500GeV for gluinos, 830GeV for bottom squarks. The excluded mass range for heavy (pseudo)scalar bosons is 350–360 (350–410)GeV. Additionally, model-independent limits in several topological regions are provided, allowing for further interpretations of the results. © 2017, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    Measurement of Associated Z + Charm Production in Proton–proton Collisions at √s=8tev

    A study of the associated production of a Z boson and a charm quark jet (Z + c), and a comparison to production with a b quark jet (Z + b), in p p collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV are presented. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7fb-1, collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The Z boson candidates are identified through their decays into pairs of electrons or muons. Jets originating from heavy flavour quarks are identified using semileptonic decays of c or b flavoured hadrons and hadronic decays of charm hadrons. The measurements are performed in the kinematic region with two leptons with pTℓ>20GeV, | ηℓ| < 2.1 , 71<m111GeV, and heavy flavour jets with pTjet>25GeV and | ηjet| < 2.5. The Z + c production cross section is measured to be σ(pp→Z+c+X)B(Z→ℓ+ℓ-)=8.8±0.5(stat)±0.6(syst)pb. The ratio of the Z + c and Z + b production cross sections is measured to be σ(pp→Z+c+X)/σ(pp→Z+b+X)=2.0±0.2(stat)±0.2(syst). The Z + c production cross section and the cross section ratio are also measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the Z boson and of the heavy flavour jet.     Search for New Physics in Events With a Leptonically Decaying Z Boson and a Large Transverse Momentum Imbalance in Proton–proton Collisions at √s = 13 Tev

    A search for new physics in events with a Z boson produced in association with large missing transverse momentum at the LHC is presented. The search is based on the 2016 data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS experiment at s=13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1. The results of this search are interpreted in terms of a simplified model of dark matter production via spin-0 or spin-1 mediators, a scenario with a standard-model-like Higgs boson produced in association with the Z boson and decaying invisibly, a model of unparticle production, and a model with large extra spatial dimensions. No significant deviations from the background expectations are found, and limits are set on relevant model parameters, significantly extending the results previously achieved in this channel. © 2018, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

    Measurement of B Hadron Lifetimes in Pp Collisions at √s=8tev

    Measurements are presented of the lifetimes of the B 0, Bs0, Λb0, and Bc+ hadrons using the decay channels B0→J/ψK∗(892)0, B0→J/ψKS0, Bs0→J/ψπ+π-, Bs0→J/ψϕ(1020), Λb0→J/ψΛ0, and Bc+→J/ψπ+. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7fb-1, was collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at s=8TeV. The B 0 lifetime is measured to be 453.0±1.6(stat)±1.8(syst)μm in J / ψK ∗(892) 0and 457.8±2.7(stat)±2.8(syst)μm in J/ψKS0, which results in a combined measurement of cτB0=454.1±1.4(stat)±1.7(syst)μm. The effective lifetime of the Bs0 meson is measured in two decay modes, with contributions from different amounts of the heavy and light eigenstates. This results in two different measured lifetimes: cτBs0→J/ψπ+π-=502.7±10.2(stat)±3.4(syst)μm and cτBs0→J/ψϕ(1020)=443.9±2.0(stat)±1.5(syst)μm. The Λb0 lifetime is found to be 442.9±8.2(stat)±2.8(syst)μm. The precision from each of these channels is as good as or better than previous measurements. The Bc+ lifetime, measured with respect to the B + to reduce the systematic uncertainty, is 162.3±7.8(stat)±4.2(syst)±0.1(τB+)μm.     Measurement of Charged Particle Spectra in Minimum-Bias Events From Proton–proton Collisions at √s=13tev

    Pseudorapidity, transverse momentum, and multiplicity distributions are measured in the pseudorapidity range | η| < 2.4 for charged particles with transverse momenta satisfying pT>0.5GeV in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13TeV. Measurements are presented in three different event categories. The most inclusive of the categories corresponds to an inelastic p p data set, while the other two categories are exclusive subsets of the inelastic sample that are either enhanced or depleted in single diffractive dissociation events. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators used to describe high-energy hadronic interactions in collider and cosmic-ray physics. © 2018, The Author(s).
