Search for Strongly Interacting Massive Particles Generating Trackless Jets in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=13 Tev
(Springer, 2022) Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration
A search for dark matter in the form of strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs) using the CMS detector at the LHC is presented. The SIMPs would be produced in pairs that manifest themselves as pairs of jets without tracks. The energy fraction of jets carried by charged particles is used as a key discriminator to suppress efficiently the large multijet background, and the remaining background is estimated directly from data. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 16.1 fb(-1), collected with the CMS detector in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. For the simplified dark matter model under consideration, SIMPs with masses up to 100 GeV are excluded and further sensitivity is explored towards higher masses.

Search for Resonances Decaying To Three W Bosons in Proton-Proton Collisions at Root S=13 Tev
(American Physical Society, 2022) Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration
A search for resonances decaying into a W boson and a radion, where the radion decays into two W bosons, is presented. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb???1 recorded in ffiffiproton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at p s 1/4 13 TeV. One isolated charged lepton is required, together with missing transverse momentum and one or two massive large-radius jets, containing the decay products of either two or one W bosons, respectively. No excess over the background estimation is observed. The results are combined with those from a complementary channel with an all-hadronic final state, described in an accompanying paper. Limits are set on parameters of an extended warped extradimensional model. These searches are the first of their kind at the LHC.

Using Z Boson Events To Study Parton-Medium Interactions in Pb-Pb Collisions
(American Physical Society, 2022) Karapınar, Güler
The spectra measurements of charged hadrons produced in the shower of a parton originating in the same hard scattering with a leptonically decaying Z boson arc reported in lead-lead nuclei (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Both Pb-Pb and pp data sets are recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb(-1) and 320 pb(-1), respectively. Hadronic collision data with one reconstructed Z boson candidate with the transverse momentum p(T) > 30 GeV/c are analyzed. The Z boson constrains the initial energy and direction of the associated parton. In heavy ion events, azimuthal angular distributions of charged hadrons with respect to the direction of a Z boson are sensitive to modifications of the in-medium parton shower and medium response. compared to reference data from pp interactions, the results for central Pb-Pb collisions indicate a modification of the angular correlations. The measurements of the fragmentation functions and p(T) spectra of charged particles in Z boson events, which are sensitive to medium modifications of the parton shower longitudinal structure, are also reported. Significant modifications in central Pb-Pb events compared to the pp reference data are also found for these observables.

Measurement of Single-Diffractive Dijet Production in Proton–proton Collisions at √s=8te With the Cms and Totem Experiments
    (Springer Nature, 2020) Sirunyan, A.M.; Karapınar, Güler; Tumasyan, A.; Adam, W.; Ambrogi, F.; Asilar, E.; Bergauer, T.; Josa, M.I.
Measurements are presented of the single-diffractive dijet cross section and the diffractive cross section as a function of the proton fractional momentum loss ξ and the four-momentum transfer squared t. Both processes pp→pX and pp→Xp, i.e. with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where X includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at s=8Te during a dedicated run with β∗=90m at low instantaneous luminosity and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 37.5nb-1. The single-diffractive dijet cross section σjjpX, in the kinematic region ξ< 0.1 , 0.03<|t|<1Ge2, with at least two jets with transverse momentum pT>40Ge, and pseudorapidity | η| < 4.4 , is 21.7±0.9(stat)-3.3+3.0(syst)±0.9(lumi)nb. The ratio of the single-diffractive to inclusive dijet yields, normalised per unit of ξ, is presented as a function of x, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by the struck parton. The ratio in the kinematic region defined above, for x values in the range - 2.9 ≤ log 10x≤ - 1.6 , is R=(σjjpX/Δξ)/σjj=0.025±0.001(stat)±0.003(syst), where σjjpX and σjj are the single-diffractive and inclusive dijet cross sections, respectively. The results are compared with predictions from models of diffractive and nondiffractive interactions. Monte Carlo predictions based on the HERA diffractive parton distribution functions agree well with the data when corrected for the effect of soft rescattering between the spectator partons. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the CMS and TOTEM collaborations.

Measurement of the Higgs Boson Production Rate in Association With Top Quarks in Final States With Electrons, Muons, and Hadronically Decaying Tau Leptons at √s=13tev
(Springer, 2021) Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, Güler; Adam, W.; Bergauer, T.; Dragicevic, M.; Eroe, J.; Vetens, W.
The rate for Higgs (H) bosons production in association with either one (tH) or two (t (t) over barH) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton-proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The analysis is aimed at events that contain H -> WW, H -> tt, or H -> ZZ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among tH, t (t) over barH, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ttH and tH signals correspond to 0.92 +/- 0.19 (stat)(-0.13)(+0.17) (syst) and 5.7 +/- 2.7 (stat)+/- 3.0 (syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for t (t) over barH, and to 1.4 (0.3) for tH production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling y(t) of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, kappa(t) = y(t)/y(t)(SM), is constrained to be within -0.9 <kappa(t) < -0.7 or 0.7 <kappa(t) < 1.1, at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the ttH production rate to date.

Search for Top Squark Pair Production Using Dilepton Final States in Pp Collision Data Collected at Root S=13tev
(Springer, 2021) CMS Collaboration; Karapınar, Güler
A search is presented for supersymmetric partners of the top quark (top squarks) in final states with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons), jets identified as originating from bquarks, and missing transverse momentum. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). Hypothetical signal events are efficiently separated from the dominant top quark pair production background with requirements on the significance of the missing transverse momentum and on transverse mass variables. No significant deviation is observed from the expected background. Exclusion limits are set in the context of simplified supersymmetric models with pair-produced lightest top squarks. For top squarks decaying exclusively to a top quark and a lightest neutralino, lower limits are placed at 95% confidence level on the masses of the top squark and the neutralino up to 925 and 450 GeV, respectively. If the decay proceeds via an intermediate chargino, the corresponding lower limits on the mass of the lightest top squark are set up to 850 GeV for neutralino masses below 420 GeV. For top squarks undergoing a cascade decay through charginos and sleptons, the mass limits reach up to 1.4 TeV and 900 GeV respectively for the top squark and the lightest neutralino.

Search for Heavy Neutrinos and W-R Bosons With Right-Handed Couplings in a Left-Right Symmetric Model in Pp Collisions at Root S=7 Tev
(American Physical Society, 2012) Karapınar, Güler
Results are presented from a search for heavy, right-handed muon neutrinos, N-mu, and right-handed W-R bosons, which arise in the left-right symmetric extensions of the standard model. The analysis is based on a 5: 0 fb(-1) sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected by the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence is observed for an excess of events over the standard model expectation. For models with exact left-right symmetry, heavy right-handed neutrinos are excluded at 95% confidence level for a range of neutrino masses below the WR mass, dependent on the value of M-WR. The excluded region in the two-dimensional (M-WR, MN mu) mass plane extends to M-WR = 2.5TeV. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.261802

Search for a Standard-Model Higgs Boson With a Mass in the Range 145 To 1000 Gev at the Lhc
(Springer Verlag, 2013) Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration
A search for a standard-model-like Higgs boson in the H -> WW and H -> ZZ decay channels is reported, for Higgs boson masses in the range 145 < m(H) < 1000 GeV. The search is based upon proton-proton collision data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.1 fb(-1) at root s = 7 TeV and up to 5.3 fb(-1) at root s = 8 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The combined upper limits at 95 % confidence level on products of the cross section and branching fractions exclude a standard-model-like Higgs boson in the range 145 < m(H) < 710 GeV, thus extending the mass region excluded by CMS from 127-600 GeV up to 710 GeV.

Study of Vector Boson Scattering and Search for New Physics in Events With Two Same-Sign Leptons and Two Jets
(American Physical Society, 2015) Karapınar, Güler
A study of vector boson scattering in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector. Candidate events are selected with exactly two leptons of the same charge, two jets with large rapidity separation and high dijet mass, and moderate missing transverse energy. The signal region is expected to be dominated by electroweak same-sign W-boson pair production. The observation agrees with the standard model prediction. The observed significance is 2.0 standard deviations, where a significance of 3.1 standard deviations is expected based on the standard model. Cross section measurements for (WW +/-)-W-+/- and WZ processes in the fiducial region are reported. Bounds on the structure of quartic vector-boson interactions are given in the framework of dimension-eight effective field theory operators, as well as limits on the production of doubly charged Higgs bosons.

Measurement of Electroweak Production of Two Jets in Association With a Z Boson in Proton-Proton Collisions at ?s=8 Tev
(Springer Verlag, 2015) Karapınar, Güler; CMS Collaboration
The purely electroweak (EW) cross section for the production of two jets in association with a Z boson, in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV, is measured using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1). The electroweak cross section for the lljj final state (with l = e or mu and j representing the quarks produced in the hard interaction) in the kinematic region defined by M-ll > 50 GeV, M-jj > 120 GeV, transverse momentum p(Tj) > 25 GeV, and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta(j)vertical bar < 5, is found to be sigma(EW) (lljj) = 174 +/- 15 (stat) +/- 40 (syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model prediction. The associated jet activity of the selected events is studied, in particular in a signal-enriched region of phase space, and the measurements are found to be in agreement with QCD predictions.
